    LYRICS:
    dancing on the crumbling precipice
the rocks are coming loose just at the edge
    are we laughing?
    are we crying?
    are we drowning?
    are we dead?
or is it all a dream?
the bombs are getting closer everyday
“that could never happen here” we used to say
    have these wars come
    to our doorstep?
    has this moment
    finally come?
or is it all a dream?
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
is the violence in our nature
just the image of our maker?
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
    to become something greater
than the violence in our nature
    are we not good enough?
or is it all a dream?
to a predetermined fate are we condemned?
or maybe we’re a book without an end?
    we’re not stories
    we’re not actors
    we’re awake
    and in control
and this is not a dream
    so can we
    break this mold
and set in motion something new?
    forgetting
    what we know
    an evolution overdue
    fight the current
    pull the ripcord
    get away
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
is the violence in our nature
just the image of our maker?
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
    to become something greater
than the violence in our nature
    are we not good enough?
well-trodden paths are all we take
we need a storm, let's pray for rain now
    to wash these roads away
let’s get off track and wander far
same roads lead to same destinations
    follow nothing but your heart
    we’re talking in our sleep
    and sleeping through our lives
    we dream of the places
    where we never die
    we step from the shadows
    and into the light
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
is the violence in our nature
just the image of our maker?
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
    to become something greater
than the violence in our nature
    are we not good enough?
    are we not brave enough?
    are we not good enough?
    or was it all dream…

I'm 53. I stopped listening to music in 1991 when I graduated from college and started working 60-80 hours a week. My daughter and my buddy recently talked me into getting a Spotify Family subscription, and I am in the process of rediscovering the music I listened to when I was young, and discovering all the music I missed in the last several decades. My new favorite band is RISE AGAINST! They're awesome. I haven't heard a single song from them that doesn't make me want to jump up and down and tear down the walls. LOVE IT.

I remember listening to this band around middle school when I was an edgy teen trying to fit in. Now I'm a senior in highschool, about to go to college and I still love their music as much as when I started listening to them. I love the message they portray in every one of their songs and I never get sick of listening to them over and over. A truly incredible band.

I listen to it a dozen times in a row and never get tired of it. I have sent it to multiple friends with the instruction...sit down, put on a seat belt, and try to stay still listening to it.

I wish this album hadn't remained so relevant as the ripples spread around the world, beautiful as it is. Here in small-town Alberta, Canada, in the tail end of 2023, and even from my isolated corner, the world keeps getting scarier. I keep trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do to stop it, but it seems, locally and abroad, the people of the world have simply gone mad -- or maybe they've reverted to what they were all along.
An outpouring of rage, hatred, and greedy fear and zero-sum thinking around the world, burning the future of our children. Is this just what humans are? Is it pointless to aspire to a better world?
But I listen to this music to remind me that we have to try anyways. Too much rides on us to give in to despair.

We need a storm, let's pray for rain now
    To wash these roads away
Let's get off track and wander far
    Same roads reducing destinations
    Following nothing but your heart
    We're talking in our sleep
    And sleeping through our lives
We dream of the places where we never die
    We step from our shadows
    And into the light
    Are we not good enough?
    Are we not brave enough?
Is the violence in our nature just the image of our maker?
    Are we not good enough?
    Are we not brave enough?
To become something greater, than the violence in our nature?
    Are we not good enough?
    Are we not brave enough?
Are we not good, good enough?
Or was it all a dream?

I don't listen to much rock anymore. Grew up thru the 90's grunge stuff and kind of lost the edge, but when these guys come out with a album I always enjoy them. Thanks guys, I'm too old to be trendy, just give me some good riffs and song writing and I'm happy. Nice job!

No, not a dream. Violence comes and subsides. People just need the perspective that drives the mindset for a peaceful resolution. "How can I/we fix this" versus "this is too big a problem." People lose sight at times, but they will come back around. As people we haven't achieved all we have by not doing so. Great video!

After hearing about what happened in Manchester and the ongoing siege in the Philippines, the chorus of this song is all I can think of. I understand that the human race has been fighting since it was living in caves, but when you see death and destruction everywhere you turn, you almost give up hope and wonder when it'll change for the better.

I think violence is a human trait. Just think about it. It takes effort to be a good person. Anyone can do the wrong thing to fit their personal needs, and agenda. You have to go beyond yourself to do what is right all of the time.

I'm a realist. I see humans as inherently evil, and will spring on their malicious desires if given the chance. But, damn, I love Rise Against, and their messages. I haven't heard a bad one yet. They really can restore one's faith in humanity.

    • @jb_lofi
      @jb_lofi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

If it weren't for the human proclivity to cooperate and empathize, we wouldn't have made it as far as we did. Operating as a community and supporting one another is vital to both the agricultural and hunter-gatherer lifestyle that defined us as a nascent species, allowing us to become what we are today. It takes something to make us overcome this inherent empathy, usually a system of dominance and subordination; it's trivially easy to make a person harm another if they feel the order comes "from above" (see: Millgram experiment) or if they're convinced of some kind of natural hierarchy (Stanford Prison Exp., racism, etc,) but in normal, everyday interactions, we're mostly far more caring and compassionate to one another than we give ourselves credit for. I guarantee your neighbours would not want to watch you starve, nor would they be violent unless they had to be.
Give your species some credit. We got to where we are by being excellent to one another, and we just have to clear up this stupid habit of making unreasonable exceptions. We can overcome the violence in our nature, it's the exception, not the rule. At least, that's how I think of it.

    • @davidmasters9057
      @davidmasters9057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jb_lofi I think part of human nature is to easily accept labels of people as us or them. It is our nature to care for and resist being violent towards the "us" group while being indifferent towards and be quick to violence against the "them" group the moment our "us" group feels threatened. The hopeful thing is that the us and them groups are taught, and as a society we can strive to teach that all of humanity is in the "us" group, and that there is no need to put anyone in the "them" group.
I think in the "love your neighbor" message the neighbor is the "us" group, and the story of the Samaritan is to say that those we consider the "them" group should actually be considered one of us, and deserving of love.
