I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-1969. It's a long story but I joined the Marine Corps out of college to avoid the draft and didn't tell my parents. They were horrified at first, but when I graduated from Officer Candidate School, it was the first time I ever saw my dad's eyes water up and he was a B-17 pilot in WW II and flew B-47's and B-52's during the cold war. While I was fighting in Vietnam, he had been assigned as the Base Commander at Clark AFB in the Philippines. After leading my platoon in combat for 10 months, I was reassigned as the assistant S-1 (Personnel) at the battalion which was in the middle of nowhere and had been attacked twice and briefly overrun once while I was out in the field with my platoon. While I was at the battalion, the battalion commander learned that my father was the Commander of Clark AFB and he arranged for me to take a couple of days to catch a medical flight to Manila. I caught a bus to Clark in my uniform (summer Charlies which was a tan short sleeve shirt with Marine green trousers). When I got to the base, I got directions to the Headquarters building and went to the Commander's office. There, the secretary in the front office asked who I was and what I wanted. I told her I was 1st Lieutenant (name) from Vietnam and I was here to see my father. She nearly feinted and then quickly opened my dad's office door and said, "Your son is here to see you, would like me to clear you schedule?" My dad was in complete shock, but quickly recovered. I had lost a lot of weight in Vietnam and I was deeply tanned. It was an incredibly emotional reunion with him and my mother. Two days later, I had to return to Vietnam to finish my tour and on 19 December, I arrived back in the US. It was not a pleasant return as we landed in San Francisco and there was an angry mob of anti-war protesters waiting outside the terminal. The screamed obscenities, they threw cans and bottles at us, and some tried to spit on the returning soldiers. But I had been invited by my girlfriend's parents (a Colonel in the Air Force who was a good friend of my dad and mom) to join them for Christmas and while there we were engaged. That made it all worth it. I never saw my dad again as he died at age 51 of a heart attack while serving at Clark AFB. My mother died from a fall at age 81 at her home in Florida. While I continued to serve in the Marine Corps for 21 years and didn't have the opportunity to visit with her much, I did retire in Florida and for many years my wife and I visited her on a regular basis. I miss them. They were the best parents any kid could have hoped to have. My father was a true hero. In WW II he was shot down over Germany and spent 2 years as a POW. During the Cold War he was always gone on both ground and airborne alerts in bombers. If you didn't live through the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis then you can't appreciate how dangerous that period was. 50% of all B-52's were on airborne alert flying patterns over the arctic armed with nuclear bombs 24/7. I wanted to follow my dad in the Air Force as a pilot. I was willing to fly anything that could get into the air, but my eyes were bad and I was not good at math since I attended 10 different junion and senior high schools in 8 different states. But when I was a captain in the Marine Corps, I did get my private license with commercial and instrument ratings. And I did get my glider pilot certificate. And I did take basic, intermediate, and advanced aerobatics. I also qualified in eleven different aircraft including an amphibian and a Beaver float plane. I only did it to honor my dad and my dream of being a pilot. Hope he looked down from heaven and was proud of me. Sorry for the long post. If I told you everything about my wild ride in life (I'm 73 now) you likely wouldn't believe me. For example, I was a motorcycle touring enthusiast, sky diver, SCUBA diver, wreck diver, underwater photographer, pilot, glider pilot, x-country skier, hiker, camper, I served two more years in combat after Vietnam, I sailed around the Hawaiian Islands when I was stationed there, historian, computer programmer, built my own computers from scratch soldering transistors, capacitors, and vacuum tubes to a primitive motherboard, and I did archaeology. In fact when I was in the Marine Corps as a Major, I was assigned as the project officer for computerizing the Marine Corps' officer assignment system that was at that time just somewhere between 75-100 three ring binder books. I didn't know what a computer was. I had spent my first 10 years in the Marine Corps in combat and the infantry. To complete the project, I had to learn how computers worked, I learned to program in FORTRAN, COBOL, Assembly, and Natural (the precursor to SQL). It took over 3 years but the transition from 3 ring binders to computerized officer assignments was a success. I received the second highest peace time award for that effort. There's more, but those were probably the most prominent ones. My experiences after I retired from the Marine Corps is just as wild. For 10 years I supported Special Operations Command at MacDill AFB, Tampa; and for 15 years I was an independent consultant supporting various Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programs supporting academics and military forces (mostly special operations) around the world. Most of my assignments were in unpleasant parts of the world with minimum personal conveniences. For example, I spent a month with special operation forces on a training exercise where we were billeted in an abandoned building with several inches of water on the floor, no hot water or hot food, and no days off. But I loved it. It wasn't nearly as bad as Vietnam. I've had a good life. Fortunately, I made good investments and since I retired in 2016, I've lived a fairly comfortable life in Florida. I learned a long time ago that life is what you make of it. As the saying goes, you can either complain about the thorns on the rose bush or you can enjoy the roses. I've always found the roses in life.
Hey may I tell you something the hippies and people who hate you and maybe spit you in your return don't blame them why because they were not angry at you or your comrade's but at the corrupt government who sent innocent young sons to a unnecessary war and that's why they did that they did wrong but can you really blame them for the government taking their sons to war

And even before she joined I always cried at these types of videos but now that I feel this loneliness without her. It hits so far home. ❤ It's been 8 months- and itll probably be a few more months until I can see her.
I dont wanna sound dumb for saying this but the little girl that lost her mother I dont i think it's right for her dad to still be in the Army . The little girl doesn't have her mother anymore and she probably just wants to be around her dad not living with her older sister
You don’t sound dumb but that’s the family’s source of income
Its hard a lot of states over the last decade have created pathways for military members to transfer their skills into civilian world jobs but sometimes those skills dont transfer and if they do you may be losing money by starting over again...
If he's not done with the years he signed up for he can't get out until he finishes I believe.
Im
Sure she has a support system and understands daddy has to work. Its not easy to just get up and leave the army you have to serve the years you committed to
Joann Reyes there are things like hardship discharges. This would qualify but they have reasons for not getting one.
Is someone cutting onions?😭
Me: I’m gonna have a great day
TH-cam: you will cry today
Me: ok
Waaaay too many ads.
damn the onions are strong with these videos
This is the kind of thing that I wished could have happened for the class of 2020. They were robbed of their senior year too soon.
I already know that if ethier of my brothers went into army and came back I would try to hug them and they would be like get off of me and stop hugging me😢😂
Girl your hair is so beautiful
The adds are not enough. Put some 200 more please
Idk if I should like this bc it’s so wholesome or unlike bc of the 1000 ads
Thank you
Happy Birthday gal you are beautiful
Aww had me in tears 😭😭😭😭😭😭
My Dad was overseas in Iraq when I was born but they let him come back about a week later
Just amazed on how all the news announcers sound the same

These videos make me miss my big brother. Also I graduate from High School NEXT MONTH! *May 19th, 2020 ❤ SEMPER FIDELIS*
As awesome as these videos are, I can't help but think about those kids who hope thus happens at thier important events and it doesn't.
I graduate this year.... hopefully i do 😅
You can do it!
am I the only one who cries at these videos?
I was crying whole time I couldn’t stop crying and whoever dislike this video is really bad person because if that was one of your parents nobody would just like this video😭
WHY DO I WATCH THESE IN PUBLIC
I’m allergic to these videos. They make my nose run, and my eyes water. There should be a warning on these videos....lol. 😂😢😂

HELPFUL TIP (DONT SKIP ME): if you skip straight to the end of the video and then click the replay button, you will skip the 10000 ads in this video

This video is amazing! But all I can think about are the two people dressed as cupcakes at 4:31
