Narcolepsy - proteins like you’ve never seen them before

  • We know that almost all parts of our brain are somehow involved in our sleep, but there is one peptide that is key: orexin. If orexin-producing cells die, and the switch mechanism between sleep and wakefulness is disabled, it will lead to the disease narcolepsy. Here, the part of the brain involved in narcolepsy is explored using 3D imaging. We can see how the cell projections have gone from the hypothalamus all the way down to the lower brainstem and work closely with the locus coeruleus neurons (red).

This was more of an ad for the human atlas project than talking about narcolepsy

I really hope we truly understand these sleep issues in the next ten years.
I have mild apnea and my doctor also believes I have narcolepsy despite a negative latency test. But I am so tired during the day I can't function...yet if I get the opportunity to nap, I can't because my mind races too much, but I can't do anything because I am so sleepy. I've fallen asleep at the wheel no less than 30 times for brief moments but don't have cataplexy. My hallucinations are rare but they will happen for a straight week in order for me to fall asleep then goes away for two weeks. I have stages of sleep paralysis that come for a few days then disappear for a while. No one can seem to figure it out and I just wish there were scientific sleep studies near me I could volunteer for. I seem to be some weird outlier and no doc really knows what to do

Sleep latency test is hard because it's a controlled environment and typically "milder" cases get missed.
But it's not really like, "you don't have it," it's inconclusive.
They like to do the latency test after the night sleep test too because sleep deprivation even to a slight extent can cause lots of the same symptoms
I would bet you have insomnia as well or maybe if you don't have narcolepsy maybe the sleep apnea and some other factors put you at a higher risk for sleep deprivation?

I really wish I could tell you something to help you but I go through the EXACT same thing. Don’t know why. I damn near died from falling asleep at the wheel MULTIPLE times. Only thing I can tell you that may make you feel better is I go through the same thing.

cataplexy does not manifest in everyibe with narcolepsy, around a fifth do not

I am in a similar state, although I have Sleep Apnea at the lower end of the "severe" band. I've been on CPAP 3 years now and I'm still as tired as when I started using it. I get Sleep Paralysis about once a week now. It was much worse before the CPAP. But I also get auditory hallucinations when I first drop off, and also sometimes shortly before falling asleep. I control things by napping most days. I have extensive autoimmune disease - arthritis, chronic migraine, something wrong with my liver, psoriasis, lichen sclerosis. My blood pressure is still bad and getting worse, despite CPAP. Recently done MSLT and didn't really get enough sleep the night before, but they let me do it anyway. Really bad HOT room, noisy etc. Slept 3 /5 naps, and went in REM really fast on one of them. But I'm 49, I seem to also be some weird inbetween thing.
