When I first discovered Keto over two years ago I went ten months almost flawlessly! I went from 360lbs to 256lbs (I was 61 y.o. at the time and am 6' tall)! Then I took a four month break and 51lbs found their way back to me. Got back on it and within three months 30lbs left me. I stalled for a bit after that and I went up and down the scale for 6 months within a 10lb range as I had a lot of distractions and life-altering decisions to make. Fast forward to the last six weeks: I moved cross country and I was too busy packing up, driving and setting up my new place to think about keto - 15lbs back on me! This is my second week of "easing" back into keto - its not really even keto, I use I.F. (16/8 then 18/6) and have continued using supplements (no RXs) to manage my diabetes and high cholesterol (which my numbers were absolutely PERFECT when bloodwork was done 4 weeks ago!) while "slowly" cutting back on the carbs, refined sugar and processed foods. In this last ten days of "easing back into it" almost 5lbs has dropped as of this morning - more importantly, though, I feel AMAZING! Most of the aches and pains from the long drive and sleeping in different hotel beds every nite for a week (and inflammation) are gone, my brain fog is clearing, food cravings (especially late at nite) are vanishing and my energy level is starting to rise again. I'm 32lbs away from my glory days of being at 256lbs (and I want to lose another 33lbs after that to get to my honeymoon weight of 223lbs from 25 years ago), but I'm not pushing myself too hard. Just joined a gym a five minute drive from the new place, I'm discovering which stores to go to for my keto supplies and I'm building a new routine to fit the new city and climate I now live in. Its all about the journey, you'll get to the destination in due time, but most importantly ENJOY THE JOURNEY! Thanks for reading all the above I wish everyone good health!
That all makes sense now. I've been doing low carb then keto for a long time now. But after the covid thing came up I really got off the band wagon. Small at first then more n more. Ive been trying off n on for a month or so to get back on keto but just having a hard time. Ok now I know why. Got to start out like I did before w no intermittent fasting then later I back do it. Thanks Dr Boz
Thank you so much Dr. Boz for explaining why returning to Keto for the second time has not been working for me. I’m going to start again but this time I will just focus on eating 20 carbs/day without worrying about fasting and cutting out meals. 🙂
I’m here to tell you...in my own case - I’ve been on many diets in my 70 years. On EVERY one...once I “took a break” from the regimen and later tried to jump back in...it never worked the same. I think this is a very real, very common and Completely Overlooked issue with dieting in general and is something that just destroys the will of so many gals especially who are fighting to get in shape.
Funny how some times, the light bulb does not go on. Got your book about a year and a half ago, read about 1/2 way through and stopped. The whole ratio thing just never seemed to work for me, and I wrote it off to my body being different. What I realized around that point, was I was doing high protein, low carb, not Keto. I made Ketones, but rarely ever had them over 2, maybe one or two times, and my BS was rarely under 100. My blood tests improved, so I said who cares. Well, in January of 2019, I got kidney stones for the first time in my life. The doctor blamed my diet, I refused to believe him. Then I got stones in June, August, and January of this year. I also found out I had Diverticulitis, and kind of got messed up with my diet. In June of last year, I weighed 282 pounds. I started at 454, but then I started to have problems, and while I didn't dive into cheesecake and Boston Cream Pie, I did start to eat things I would not have. Next thing I knew, I hit 330 pounds again after a few month. While I held at that after that, it was discouraging not to buy new pants every 3 - 5 months, and not be able to wear the last ones I bought. Last week, I decided to get serious again. I had felt horrible for 6 months, I had a DVT blood clot which they gave me Elequis for, and I did not react really well to it. They tried a different one, and it just was not getting my blood thin enough, so I decided to tough it out with the Elequis. But even after not taking it any more for over a month, I still felt horrible. I actually started watching the weekly series you did last week from 2 years ago with patient consults. I knew in the past, I was not eating the fat percentage I should, but the light bulb went on, hey, lets do this right. I started re-reading the book again, and it makes so much more sense to me now. I ordered a FORA meter, I didn't really care for the other one I had in the past, I think everyone does not name them, but where you have a lot of bad strip readings, and for me, their glucose strips never read right, and I compared it to 3 other meters and my blood work to say that. It came Monday, I was only 5 days in to trying to eat right. In the afternoon Monday, my BS was 106, Ketones were 109, ratio of 55.79. I was surprised to hit that so soon. Then Tuesday AM right after I woke up, BS 97, Keytones 2.2, ratio 44.09. Today at wake up, BS 99, Keytones 2.1, ratio 47.14. I know in the past, when I used the Lebra, I discovered my BS climbs fast in the AM when I wake up, not sure that this AM might have just been me fumbling with the strips a bit longer than the day before. I get up around 5AM, I usually get home from work around 5PM. What I had to change, was since I don't usually eat with my wife, daughter, and grandkids, I used to wait till they were done to make my dinner since no one else at home is doing this. Now I try to make mine quick, clean up, and get out of their way to not frustrate anyone. I have been getting 13-14 hours a day fasting with nothing but water and salt through the evening and early morning, I usually eat my breakfast and have a coffee with butter in it around 7:30AM at work. I gave up my 6AM out of the shower coffee at home, that went easier than I thought it would. That's just an update, I realize you get a ton of people who message you, and chances are this is just one in a million, especially with your speech today, but wanted to thank you for what you do, which blows my mind, how do you do it all????
Awesome reminders! After months of doing 72 hour fast! I feel great!!! My numbers are getting better & better....losing weight & healing from the inside out. Thank you, Dr. Boz! You are awesome!!!! ❤️🙏
Been on keto for nearly 2yrs now. I'm on a program thru Virtahealth. 2 key things for me were patience and consistency. And I plateaued at the beginnning too for about 3-4 months and then started loosing weight like crazy. 60lbs lighter now and very happy. Its a great healthy lifestyle if it works for you. Good luck!!
Thank you so kindly for being diligent in posting as many videos as you have. I just found your Vlog 2 days ago and have not stopped watching the videos. I pray you will allow soon and very soon a video sharing not only what, but exactly what to eat from day one and maybe, possibly, a few meals for breakfast. lunch and dinner or breakfast, snack and dinner items for the Ketogenik dieting person. Thank you again for your help and information.
I went on keto for about 3 months, then I did the Mediteranean diet and then back to the normal South African diet. The South African diet makes me eat a lot and I am hungry all the time. On the keto diet I was almost never hungry so I am going back to it.
Thank you for this!! I was about to give up on keto because I just couldn’t get back on it and be successful. I was starting back eating omad or intermittent fasting. When I first started I ate breakfast and snacks and lost so much more weight and quicker than trying to fast initially. Thank you!
I get what i did wrong from this video, i jumped right to 16 hr fasting instead of starting from the starting point, but my issue is have been doing the wrong thing for 6 weeks,I cant really understand what her advice is,do i have to go back to the beginning and stop the IF or 72 hr fasting?, she explains so well what i did wrong but not how i fix it.
I have just watched 2 of your videos and I have to say that I am really impressed with both your honesty and explanations (delivery). So I’ve hit the subscribe button. 👍
The only way I’ve found that I can successfully re-enter the ketogenic way of eating is to high fat meal prep for a few days in advance and eat as much food as I can handle at regular intervals even if I’m not hungry. If I wait till I’m hungry to eat before entering ketosis I’ll most likely be overwhelmed by carb cravings. I workout regularly so exercise depleting muscle glycogen is going to happen quite easily. I also drink electrolytes throughout the day even if I’m not thirsty to counter having to use the restroom so often. Combining all 3 of these gets me back into ketosis in about 3 days but I’ll ride this process the entire week if need be.
↖ Thank you so much! I've lost 35 pounds doing keto and IF and have hit a wall in the last few weeks as I'm nearing my target weight and nearly gave up a few times after getting frustrated with it all! This video has really helped me to get motivated once again and not to give up 😍
I did AMAZING on Keto the first time, lost 93lbs in a year.... couldn't lose another pound no matter what I did. I did 18:6 IF and ate lunch and early dinner and zero snacking. I wasn't really working out, just walking briskly for an hour everyday with the dogs, so light exercise. I got off the wagon during Covid for about a year and gained a ton of weight back .....now have been on keto (nearly carnivore) for a full month, very low carbs like 15 or less a day and doing a 19hr fast window everyday and this time doing breakfast and lunch and skipping dinner. I haven't lost a single pound in the last month....it's really discouraging. I guess I need to do a long fast now.... hopefully it will work to kickstart me. The first 2 yrs on keto the longest fast was maybe 30 hrs...and that was tough because I easily get migraines that last all day and are excruciating, which can be triggered from not eating. I get headaches if I don't eat when I need to....which is why I'm hesitant to do a really long fast, I know I'll have a debilitating headache for at least a day, if not more. I am guessing it's a drop in blood pressure or sugar....I have fairly low BP and resting BPM. And sometimes my sugar would be below 70 doing IF. I've had migraines that last for 2-3 days straight so I know the pain that is possible. It's also the reason I hate doing intense exercise...I often get really bad headaches after a cardio workout. I might just stick to strength training only.
Omg!!! This is what I’ve been doing wrong. I lost 50 lbs the first time within 6 months. Then I had some health struggles. I was out on medication to lower my thyroid production which slows down my metabolism and made me gain weight. I’m now in remission and trying to lose the weight I’ve gained back. Happy I didn’t gain it all back. But I did gain half of it back. I kept trying to do keto with the IF. Starting tomorrow I’m going to drop the IF for now and see how things go.
the first time was NOT easy I had worst keto flu I barely could run I looked like a train wreck later my hair fell out however when I had achieved ketosis it did feel amazing and I looked and felt awesome
I use Low dose naltrexone (LDN) for those who need to decrease their inflammatory markers (including stress, anxiety, pain) and combined with Keto. beautiful thing :) Dr Kelly
After two years of pretty strict keto I fell off the wagon for a good year. I finally got back on the wagon and pretty much have been in deep ketosis right off the bat. Last night I ate a few potatoes and had some corn chips for a snack earlier in the day. I checked my ketones this morning and they were 1.7 and my glucose was 87. I'm pretty happy about that. I typically eat OMAD and sometimes eat a late snack around 3 or 4 before my only meal of the day. Two weeks in and I'm down about 10lbs. I only gained about 25lbs back in the year off the wagon.
Thank you for explaining the why! I am having such a hard time loosing the weight again i went back to a lot of junk foods for about a year but still doing 16:8 I.F. I'm Back to keto with I.F. at 16:8 but I'm having a hard time loosing the weight. Back to basics!
I'm finding it hard to understand why somebody would jump out of Keto back to carbs and inflammation. I've been doing this for 4 months and lost 52 pounds of weight. Of course I'll go on an all inclusive holiday, but I'll be educated enough to know where I can be sensible. I would say that Keto isn't a 'diet'. It's a lifestyle.
4 months - you newbie, I’ve been in ketosis for 5 and a half years 😉 Congrats on your weight loss & keto success, and long may it continue! To understand why people do it though...Easy, they want to be normal for a day/weekend They know keto is effortless to them now, just like it is to you now I’d imagine. They have every intention of jumping straight back keto first thing Monday.... only it doesn’t work like that!! It’s no different to a person who had a serious problem with alcohol going out for just one or two, don’t get me wrong sometimes it’s successful, but in reality the majority of the time it’s just stimulating old dopamine receptors and forming addicting patterns again. And as for being educated, have you ever stood outside a hospital at around 10am and seen 10-15 nurses on their break chatting away to each other whilst smoking? Because I have many times and they’re obviously educated more than most about these risks. Just food for thought 💭
Youre right 10000 percent. After successful weeks i ruined it cause my addiction to carbs as comfort food was calling me and asking for permission like "ok and monday back to keto". Its been 3 months...
Congratulations on your journey, how are you a year later? I have been keto since 2016 and it was so easy for 3y. I was dating and living alone - plenty of free time to plan meals and fasting. I found married life a challenge for keto, especially pregnancy. I moved away from work, the commute has been hard to. Also, it’s tempting to indulge with the husband: wine, chips ect.
@@25cbergeron Hi. I agree that keto can be difficult with family life. But I don't need to worry as I cook for myself now. I've been keto for almost 2 years now and my total weight loss was 103 pounds. I reversed my flirt with type 2 diabetes and all my joint inflammation has gone. I can run up stairs like a 15 year old and I'm 54 lol. Ultimately I feel that I am in a better place. I hike for one hour each day and I'm lifting weights at my gym again. Thanks for your comment.
@Burns Warfield For me, it was all about the planning. I had to plan what to have in the fridge for meals and snacks. I also take keto food with me when I'm going out all day. Plan it on paper first then execute the plan. I find it easier and cheaper on Keto now.
I did Keto 2 or 3 times. The 1sy time was successful because I was disciplined & was doing it with almost diet alone plus I didn't have a lot of money so I got my food from Grocery Outlet but the next time I had more money so I bought carb blockers & Keto jump start pills & would fall back on them & then like the 1st time I got stressed and it wasn't as successful as that very 1st time.
This really makes me wonder because if we think about the seasonal availability of food for our ancestors, it seems like they had times of feasting and times of famine nearly every year for perhaps several months at a time. I know they weren't particularly fat unless you were like Henry the 8th.
Dr. Boz, I just wanted to verify what I think you said: we must become Keto before we begin fasting? I’ve been doing OMAD for 4 months and really enjoy it. I started Keto 2 weeks ago. So do I need to cut of the fasting for a bit to raise my hormones? I might add that I have insulin resistance and Hashimoto’s.
Dr. Boz question? I’ve been doing fasting for 2 years not actually keto ...I started being educated by your TH-cam so started in July ... lost 15 pounds... felt great , more energy, Memory returning... however my family came to visit , fell off 10 days ... do I need to Start over ?
Jasan Grey I would watch as many of Dr. Boz utube as you can. Begin with “starting Keto” Binge watch until you “get it” Tips; 20 carbs (total carbs) day. High fat, NOT high protein. Education to be successful is the key. She offers a “consistently Keto” course, highly encourage AND she has a book “Any Way You Can”
Okay, I have a question. I watched this video twice through and I’m a little confused. I, too, was Keto for 15 months and have fallen off the wagon for the past six months and am struggling to get it started again. Are you saying that we should start at the 20 total carbs a day for 8 weeks AND incorporate 72 hour fasting once per week at the same time? Or is the fasting to come after we have become Keto adapted again? Please explain. Thank you!
While you're waiting for a response, the first part of the plan is to eat Keto and to build in intermittent fasting. Aim for 16:8 but at a comfortable pace. That may be enough for many people. The mention of a 72 hour fast was only stated for people who have stalled on their weight loss - If that's applicable. The next step is to drop two two meals per day - which shouldn't be too hard, because the high fat diet makes it hard to fit three meals in per day. If you're losing weight or you don't need to, eating less than 20g of carbs per day - with intermittent fasting - may be enough for many people and enough to induce autophagy. The 36 48 and 72 hour fasts only apply if you're stalled or want/need to take things to the next level. Hope this helps.
@@RobCLynch i get from the video what i did wrong when i got back into keto i jumped to 16/8 IF instead of starting from beginning and raising my hormones but i have been doing the wrong thing for 6 weeks now, what i dont get from the video is how do i correct this do i start over from the beginning and eliminate IF and start all.over again ot do i do the 72 hr fasting
@@shiningarmor8709 Once again, I have never done a 72hour fast during my ten months of Keto. I've only done two meals at a max of 18:6 with the occasional 19:5 and 20:4 but when I got stuck, I did the odd one day OMAD and that was enough. I think a 16:8 is a good starting point for most people, but I realise that some people may be stuck with insulin resistance and require more extreme measures. But I'd follow docto Boz's advice with regard to longer fasts.
What do you think about potassium supplmentation while fasting. The closest thing I can find with a good amount is the "Body Armor Lyte" drinks with the big bottles coming in at 1240mg. I want to do two a day to keep potassium intake up for my HTN. I notice a huge difference in numbers when I keep my potassium higher and stay hydrated as well. Currently I am trying Fasting Monday Tuesday, Eating Wednesday, Fasting Thursday, Friday, then eating Saturday and Sunday. Not eating during the work week is very easy for me
I did keto for like 8 mos and lost 20kg now im back to eating carbs trying hard to get back with keto but its very hard for me 😭😭😭😭 why its like this? I wanna get back sith keto diet again how to do it?? It seems like im having hard time because after 2-4 days not eating carbs my body hungers for it and i start to eat carbs/rice 😭😭😭😭😭😭 pls help me
I was on the keto diet a few years ago and lost 13kg in three weeks ,clear brain etc. But OFF I went. Now I have always be a two meal a day person, don't really eat much junk food. But this time I lost 3kg in 3 weeks and my brain hasn't clear, no energy. It's been 6 weeks now and no change.k I know must be doing something wrong but just can't find it. ANY suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You?
Thanks Doc! I didn't go crazy, but I fell off the wagon at Christmas and have struggled getting things under control since. I got serious about things a couple of months ago, but my blood glucose is still hovering around 7.5 (~ 130-135) instead of an A1C of 6.0 (~108) where it was last time. I've been eating 2 meals per day, around 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM. Should I go back to 3 meals per day or just wait until my body catches up?
So I had results after 6-8 wks but I had severe fatigue, charley horses. I took sodium, magnesium, potassium, drank pickle juice, ate olives, pickles, drank water, took epsom salt baths. To no avail. Within a week of eating the old American way they went away.
My husband is losing too much weight, how stop the weight loss on keto? He's down to 125 pounds. He is a small man at 5' 8" but he's too lite. He likes to be in the 140's thanks
This happened to my husband when we went keto. He lost a lot of fat. Then he started to work out harder and with weights and started gaining muscle. He added keto friendly nuts in measured quantities. He added collagen protein in the morning to his keto coffee. He upped his keto coffee. His weight has stabilized at a thin healthy muscular range
I had great results from keto, and lost 70 lbs. Stress combined with KungFlu happened and I stress ate comfort foods for a year. I gained back 30 lbs. I did have a sticking point around 300 lbs on my 1st weight loss. I have been stuck at 300 +- 5lbs for months while eating right, with lower calories, and NC under 20. I am eating OMAD or TMAD with IF averaging 18-19 hrs. This is frustrating.

This is so true. I’ve been doing this and feeling very unhealthy and brain dead 🙄
I’ve been “bargaining” with myself about moderation vs abstinence for years now.

I also drink electrolytes throughout the day even if I’m not thirsty to counter having to use the restroom so often. Combining all 3 of these gets me back into ketosis in about 3 days but I’ll ride this process the entire week if need be.
Perfect timing. Today I started back on keto.
I use Low dose naltrexone (LDN) for those who need to decrease their inflammatory markers (including stress, anxiety, pain) and combined with Keto. beautiful thing :)
Dr Kelly
After two years of pretty strict keto I fell off the wagon for a good year. I finally got back on the wagon and pretty much have been in deep ketosis right off the bat. Last night I ate a few potatoes and had some corn chips for a snack earlier in the day. I checked my ketones this morning and they were 1.7 and my glucose was 87. I'm pretty happy about that. I typically eat OMAD and sometimes eat a late snack around 3 or 4 before my only meal of the day. Two weeks in and I'm down about 10lbs. I only gained about 25lbs back in the year off the wagon.
Before I saw ur pic I read the first 2 sentences n knew ur a guy! Guys are SO lucky in their endocrinology.
Thank you for explaining the why!
I am having such a hard time loosing the weight again i went back to a lot of junk foods for about a year but still doing 16:8 I.F. I'm Back to keto with I.F. at 16:8 but I'm having a hard time loosing the weight.
Back to basics!
Thank you! This explains a lot! 🙋♀️
4 months - you newbie, I’ve been in ketosis for 5 and a half years 😉
Congrats on your weight loss & keto success, and long may it continue!
To understand why people do it though...Easy, they want to be normal for a day/weekend
They know keto is effortless to them now, just like it is to you now I’d imagine.
When is your new book coming out? I really like your supplements btw
Yes hold off till ur in ketosis to fast more than OMAD
Dr. Boz question?
I’ve been doing fasting for 2 years not actually keto ...I started being educated by your TH-cam so started in July ... lost 15 pounds... felt great , more energy, Memory returning... however my family came to visit , fell off 10 days ... do I need to Start over ?
I still don’t understand what I am supposed to do....
Jasan Grey I would watch as many of Dr. Boz utube as you can. Begin with “starting Keto” Binge watch until you “get it”
Tips; 20 carbs (total carbs) day. High fat, NOT high protein. Education to be successful is the key. She offers a “consistently Keto” course, highly encourage AND she has a book “Any Way You Can”
Just keep trying
Start over! Baby steps...
Thankyou so much
Okay, I have a question.
First, start with keto. After following keto enough to not feeling hungry, try to skip meal. Then IF.
But I'd follow docto Boz's advice with regard to longer fasts.
please make a video about keto and heavy menstruation, i mean not once but every month, cut back a high fat?
Get rid of sweeteners!
Not eating during the work week is very easy for me
Are the drinks sweetened?
@@tymom9313 Yes. Would technically break a fast
Can you do keto with gallbladder?
I’m focusing on calisthenics training light weights and bodyweight exercises what should my macros be if I wanna build muscle mass
Thank you for your love of science application to help people! May God bless you and your family!
So I’ve started over, at the beginning, still no weight loss. 3 months
Ooof this one hit a nerve haha
Up the fat, and make sure he not in calorie deficit
Make sense
Doctor.. can a person reverse type 2 diabetes with 24 hr intermittent fasting, & watching their diet .
thx
Read dr Jason fong on the diabetes code and the obese code very informative
Thank uou
Also I have these gross cottage cheese under arms and thighs now!!!!
One of your best yet Dr 🤨. Just one complaint. You have upped the fashion stakes and no longer look like the adorable Dr from the mid west. 😑
