I really appreciate John's candor in speaking openly about his experiences in the skate industry. I'm continually baffled by the "core skate industries" intransigence in recognizing "youtube skaters." In my eyes what Revive has done is similar to what World Industries did in the 80's: create a new scene on their own terms without permission from the big dogs. For the "core skate industry" to intentionally ignore "youtube skaters" is to only hurt themselves as they are intentionally ignoring one of the largest, modern-movements in the skateboarding market place.

  • @triggrhappi

Ollie is def a standard for 1st trick, but my 2nd trick was an inward pop-shuvit over a 1 ft curb with a 2ft drop on the other side which was after 3 months of skating on weekends around 12yo. My friend Thomas and I had our ollie's on point, we were under the impression that tricks are only tricks when done while riding, so we focused on being super consistent with ollie's up and down a pavement and being well balance on our boards first.
    - (mainly because we believed that a trick is only a trick when you're moving. Also because skateboarded EVERYWHERE, we had few skateparks in our country back then and the ones we had were extremely far from our town so you kinda dont wanna need to stop and pick up your board when skateboarding is your transport)
I also had a really cheap board from a "Wallmart" in my country and im pretty sure my back truck was put on skew which made the board pop inward on the tail and after we landed a few ollies over the gap between MANY attempts, my friend Thomas said "Dude about 8/10 of the ones you don't land are doing an inward pop-shuvit so try focus on that, maybe lean back to keep it under you or jump more upright but Im sure you almost 50% there" then he shrugged.. and we was right.. i leaned back, intended the shuvit after the pop, and it worked. i landed with one foot 3 times and then landed twice with both feet but ran off from wheel bite, got it on 6TH TRYYYYY. His first trick was a heelflip off the same gap but it took a few more attempts, but for the same reason. His ollie bails were mostly flipping heel side. The point of this story is to show that as a beginner, you might have some strengths to do a certain trick where you see a "weakness" in trying a different trick which could help you land your 2nd trick simply because it suits your muscle memory. My 3rd trick was a frontside 180 and then 4th trick was frontside 180 into fakie nose manual. I could frontside 180 to nose manual (avg 3m to 4m) before i could kickflip. I also skate mongo so i learnt how to 1 foot manual over 50m before i could kickflip.. So i agree about the kickflip not needing to be the "standard" 2nds trick of skating progression, even though before that we both believed that was the way. DONT LET THE KICKFLIP BE A BARRIER!!!

About your opinions on college not teaching well. There are some professors who are those failed authors while others are the very successful ones who only want to help their students. I went to college and graduated this year with my associates in fine arts, photography. I experienced some amazing professors who made college seem easier than high school. But other professors teach unfairly and can be brutal judging your work. College truly depends on your relationship with the professor and how well they teach you. Everyone learns and teaches differently making peoples opinion on school different. It all depends on you the person and your experience with school.

YOOOOOOOOOOOO I got a photo of me getting my first board, I was chubby as HECK TOO! But my board wasn't walmart, was a decent deck, REDs ball bearings. After about 6 years, I forgot it on a bus while I was on a date. I just played it cool and continued the day like nothing happened. But it still hurts me inside that I don't have my first board lol P.S. I did an Ollie with my longboard recently, next is shoves then ima try freestyle tricks.
