    What is HastyBot up to? Played an r-slur last time and now the f-slur this time

    The choice of pool for this game is a bit weird. I expected they would have just doubled the standard pool, but instead it seems to be much more heavy on consonants than that.
    The introduction of quad letter/word scores and those dense areas in the centre-edges of triple and double-doubles no doubt make for some explosive turns scoring-wise. Looks great fun.

    • @Charles-yi3mx
      @Charles-yi3mx ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's close to the standard letter distribution doubled, but with more "good" tiles and less "bad" tiles. For example there are 10 Ss but only 3 Vs.

    • @manaphylv100
      @manaphylv100 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all the 1-pointers are doubled, but some 3-pointers like C and M are tripled because they are much easier to use on an open board, and so many words have 2 Cs or 2 Ms.
      They could have also tripled the K and maybe Z, but left the Q at one.
      What I don't like is that they put 4 blanks in it, without an algorithm to prevent anyone from having more than 2 in hand (I had 3 once). They should have just kept them at two.

      I pretty love the concept of cutting the size of vowels. We don't need as much vowels (42) in English Scrabble game, 40 vowels would be much better. However they only make it 77 out of 200, it's honestly a mistake. The proportion of E should be slightly increased, so as the A they could just keep it 18 rather than 16. They could just simply redo the tile set and forget about the original scrabble set.

    • @manaphylv100
      @manaphylv100 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ohtani2024 Don't forget there are still a bunch of Ys, which are more often used as vowels than consonants in English.
      I think the standard set has too many Is. They could have dropped 2 Is and added a C and a K.
      They could also make a separate set for the SOWPODS/CSW version with a few more tiles and a lower score for Zs. It is a very different game with a lot of loanwords containing multiple Ks or Zs, and exclusive 2-letter words like ZE/ZO.

    It does sometimes feel a little irritating that they "got rid of all the slurs" but somehow that one is still in just because it has an alternate meaning that no one actually uses in real life

    • @Unchained_Alice
      @Unchained_Alice ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It does actually have a meaning in the uk that is used. Not arguing for it being allowed because it shouldnt be if other slurs are banned. But here it is a food and you can buy it in any supermarket with that name

    • @almightyhydra
      @almightyhydra ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Honestly, IMNHSO getting rid of slurs is pathetic pandering to the oversensitive PC crowd anyway. They're just tiles on a board, nobody is expressing an opinion or statement when they play a scrabble word. But I also appreciate that I tend to think of things more abstractly than some others, and people could, quite reasonably, be offended.
      In the meantime, I thought the alternate meaning for the slur in this game was a bassoon. Turns out that's not the case in English, instead it refers to some sort of wood, or a metalworking technique. Or indeed a food as the other comment suggested.

    • @mackmeller
      @mackmeller  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I think there are definitely valid arguments on both sides to the removing slurs debate -- in favor of keeping them the main argument (as pointed out below) is that Scrabble plays are just strings of letters rather than words intended to express meaning, and in favor of removing them is making the game more friendly towards younger players as well as the general public, which is also quite important. The problem with removing them, as Adam has rightfully noted and this video has illuminated, is that the choice of which words to remove was quite arbitrary, leaving a handful of still clearly offensive words in the lexicon that now almost stand out even more.

    • @denisl2760
      @denisl2760 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mackmeller That can definitely be taken too far if we're not careful. How long until words like "slave", "racist", "white", "plantation" are removed? Then you have to keep track of which words are in the dictionary but not allowed to be played, it'd ruin the game.

    • @asdfasdf4924

      For the record, when NASPA had the vote that ended up being overruled by the executive committee (they had the power to do it but it doesn't mean that it wasn't terrible optics-- what's the point in having a vote?) I voted to just remove a single word (the N word). I'm not so sensitive that the F-slur bothers me if played in a Scrabble game, but being gay myself it does irk me just a little bit that because it has another meaning it's still in

    I assume the lexicon doesn't support 21 letter words. But more than ok to be proven wrong in this aspect. I assume it's a 108-timer, if it's not obstructed by a 2 letter word played by an amateur at the worst possible time.

    I'm somewhat surprised you put the disclaimer for this word but not for the word played in game 86. I personally have never been offended by anything over a scrabble board because to me they're just valid strings of letters and most of the words I play I don't even know the meanings to. But I also understand that just because I'm not offended doesn't mean others aren't.

    • @whitesoxMLB
      @whitesoxMLB ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An advance warning helps you know to mentally steel yourself. For folks with a crippling fear of Paul Bunyan, seeing the bot play both AX and OX on the same turn could certainly trigger some negative emotions.

    • @mackmeller
      @mackmeller  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah the word in game 86 is actually what gave me the idea -- someone suggested I do something about it after seeing that and having realized this game also had an offensive word decided to put the plan in action now. Since TH-cam offers very limited editing capability once a video is published I couldn't add it back to game 86 without re-uploading and losing all the views and comments, which seemed not worth it.
      I'm totally with you on not being offended by anything over a Scrabble board, and I expect most tournament players watching would feel the same way, but I know this channel has a lot of casual viewers who might feel differently and/or not understand how tournament players typically see this, and want to do everything I can to make sure they don't feel any negative impact from the videos.

    • @qb616
      @qb616 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO a disclaimer is a bit much, maybe just when a word like that appears just acknowledge it's a 'bad word' but is valid in scrabble.
      Besides, a disclaimer for a word doesn't make much sense without knowing what category the word belongs to, some people would be triggered by the word 'rape' but not at all by the one played in this video, but may now not watch because of the unknown

    • @whitesoxMLB
      @whitesoxMLB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qb616 A disclaimer doesn't make much sense if you view the purpose as having anything to do with protecting other people from anything that matters. But if you understand it as protecting yourself from folks who look to get strategically offended at things to gain clout at others' expense, its utility becomes much more apparent.

  • @mavenofmacau6391

    enough with the disclaimers about an "offensive word". stop feeding the weakness.

    • @mackmeller
      @mackmeller  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I agree with you that it's just a word on a board and as such not offensive in practice, but I know a lot of viewers here aren't familiar with how tournament players typically view words and the whole expurgation debate so want to make sure they don't get offended and shy away from the channel or, worse, Scrabble as a whole.
