Editors SAG Awards Film 2024 predictions: Could Margot Robbie or Bradley Cooper stage an upset?

  • It's been presumed for months now that the lead actress race in film categories at the various ceremonies was destined to be a two-way race between Emma Stone for "Poor Things" and Lily Gladstone for "Killers of the Flower Moon." Lately, it's been more of a one-way race, with Stone topping BAFTA, the Golden Globes and Choice Choice honors. But in a Screen Actors Guild Film Awards predictions slugfest this week in advance of Saturday's ceremony, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were asked to consider a third contender: Margot Robbie for "Barbie." This is because they were joined by encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire and regular Gold Derby contributor Tariq Khan, who made a convincing case that Robbie was poised for a massive upset based on his personal survey of some 500 SAG Awards voters. Watch their lively discussion above.

    also, it's more interesting to compare Emma Stone to Everything Everywhere because her role is actually more similar to Michelle Yeoh because it's so wacky and out there. Tar was a less "loved" and more divisive movie than Poor Things has turned out to be even though people have been predicting that Poor Things will be a divisive pick and it has not turned out this way at all. So I give the edge to Emma if you're comparing last year.

  • @danielkenealy7503
    @danielkenealy7503 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    Daniel is very sharp, as always. The potential parallel between Lily/Emma and Michelle/Cate is a compelling one. The only thing that holds me back from predicting Gladstone at SAG is the relative strength of the films we're comparing here. Cate Blanchett lost SAG for a film that was struggling to break out beyond her performance and Michelle Yeoh won for a film that was surging towards a massive Oscar sweep. It's almost the opposite case this year in terms of the films. Poor Things seems to be building momentum and might win 3 or 4 Oscars. Killers of the Flower Moon seems to be fading. So, I'll stick with Emma for now. There are days left to go!

    Oppheimer has done so much winning, in the above board categories and same four actors keep winning will anyone outside of Hollywood watch. I felt same way last year with EEAAO. 2023 was a better overall year in film.

    • @ella2117
      @ella2117 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What voters consider the best doesn't care about your feelings. Sometimes there is a concensus or near consensus across the board. At least it won't massacre everything ATL the way EEAO did, it got an extra acting win and screenplay on top of director, picture and lead+supporting. Other movies get a share of the "love" more than last year where many went home empty handed

    The more I think about why Cillian should win the more I am convinced it should be him. I say this as a Paul Giamatti fan too. I think all the nominees in Best Actor will win Oscars someday no doubt. But this year really should belong to Cillian Murphy.
    - he’s truly the lead. He’s almost in every frame for 3 hours while Paul is in more of an ensemble piece. Doesn’t rule him out though.
    - Cillian lost weight, changed his accent, changed his voice, learned another language, changed his posture. He has a giant IMAX camera in his face capturing every emotion. He truly became Oppenheimer. I see the hard work & commitment that went into the role. Not refuting that a more comedic role isn’t hard work either. But Paul’s role felt more in his wheelhouse. I didn’t leave the cinema thinking “my god I’ve never seen Paul better”. Because I believe have seen him better. Meanwhile Cillian flat out floored me. I felt completely in awe of his talent.
    - Cillian hasn’t won a SAG before meanwhile Paul already has 4. Not saying he can’t win another one. But it would be nice to see someone new recognised too.
    I guess I’m just rambling. All are deserving but I truly believe it belongs to Cillian this year.

    You guys are experts? Bradley has no chance. Pauls performance is just Paul. He is playing a character that is so close to his usual style. Just being beloved does not win you the award. Cillian gave a movie carrying performance that was nuanced, not low key or subdued. You guys should know the difference between showy and nuanced and which is harder. Cillian is greatly respected by his fellow actors for a long career that is incredibly diverse. By the way, you guys got it wrong. SAG awards just ended and Cillian walked away with the Actor. he is a lock for the Oscar.

    Man, that will break my heart if SAG gives Margot a win but not Ryan Gosling. That is so unfair. He gave the best performance. I mean, what does a guy have to do? He sang, danced, and nailed his performance of Ken. RD Jr, was good, but it wasn't a hard performance. Ryan's was tranformative in personality and type of character. He took a big risk. And he not only nailed it, he elevated the film. People who loved or hated the film all agree on one thing: Ryan was the best thing about the movie. I would place him behind Gosling. I give up on award shows. I feel they are political in nature. It's such a shame that Ryan will not be awarded anything for his efforts.

    That's not going to happen. Emma Stone is on roll with Poor Things. Even if the SAG voters haven't watched the film, Emma has been nominated multiple times and a previous winner. In an ideal world, Lily Gladstone would walk away with the Oscar. However, it's pretty obvious Emma will become a 2x Oscar winner.
    In addition, SAG voters like repeat winners. For example, Viola Davis has multiple wins in both film and TV.

    Idris Elba and Emily Blunt in Supporting are the only times SAG has awarded non-Oscar nominees, it has never happened in Lead so Margot is likely not winning. Also, this idea that films with multiple nominations have to win something is completely misleading, SAG has left plenty of films going with zero wins.
