Nice Intro! My Grandfather took me to see Treaure Island, Gulliver's Travels And a couple of other classics at the local children's matinee theater downtown. There was also a juggling act, some dogs act, zany antics and a fabulous magic show. Those were magical times. This pirate really scared the daylights out of me.

Exactly what I was thinking watching the other pirate one on here. It had acting, real acting. Where they know they're just acting and aren't trying to do this whole diva thing. It had genuine emotion built into it, even with the story being cheap as chips lol. Did things cgi just can't.

Yes. Robert Newton has always been best at playing a pirate - any pirate. Fairbanks, Lancaster, and Flynn were men 'playing' pirate.
Newton showed a confidence and authenticity completely unmatched by any other.
Charles Laughton was good because his skill as an actor was unmatched. Were I to give the title of 'Pirate' to anyone besides Robert Newton of Stephenson's Treasure Island fame, it would be Wallace Beery.

ROBERT NEWTON was in JAMAICA INN, 1932, ALFRED HITCHCOCK. It was MAUREEN O'HARAS' first movie and included CHARLES LAUGHTON.
This is not the only pirate movie of LONG JOHN SILVER, that starred ROBERT NEWTON as the lead, LONG JOHN SILVER. It seems as though ROBERT NEWTON was born to play this part. ROBERT NEWTON does not get enough credit for his superb portrayals of THE BAD GUY!!!! Even in OLIVER TWIST, as BILL and starring ALEC GUINNESS as Fagan, his portrayal of bad guy, BILL was supreme.
    ROBERT NEWTON,
One of the finest actors of the 20th century.

Robert Newton was a great actor, and could play any type. Including the "pirate accent" which he basically invented. He based it on the people he met growing up in Mounts Bay, near Penzance, on the Lizard, the very south-western end of Cornwall.
Robert Newton also briefly attended Exeter School, Devon, a prestigious, private ("public") school, so he was no pirate 🤗 I write from where I live - Exeter, Devon, England 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I would say that Wallace Beery did a pretty job of it as well, the earlier Treasure Island Movie with Jackie Cooper. However, it was Robert Newton and his interpretation and especially his dialect that made the role his own. Also, honestly, doesn't every aspiring pirate actor try to imitate that dialect. Just as they do with Bela Lugosi's when doing Vampire stories.

My favorite pirate movie is the 1958 movie,"The Buccaneer" starring Yul Brynner and directed by Anthony Quinn.
Charlton Heston as Andrew Jackson was just as good as his role as Moses in another Cecille B.Demille.movie,"The 10 Commandments" from 1956 which also starred Yul Brynner as well.

Yul was a dick head, crist.....Burt Lancaster played a better pirate....of course somebody has to whine about the "official" No.1 pirate flick of all time, figures.....I dont even like the old Spaghetti's he showed up in, total crap actor, even tried to hog the camera from Steve Mcqueen in the Magnificent 7.

Yul Brenner had a great screen persona, but I agree, he should never had urinated on your cornflakes.
Also, no Actor can "hog the camera"
You have Directors, Producers and the Cinematographer, blame them for any camera tasking errors.

The Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper movie was the first Treasure Island. It was great movie, but the Disney Version Followed up with the same action and the cast of characters far surpassed it. Walt: You Did Good! Thank You! Robert Newton has had an excellent career in the Pirate Tradition and makes a good rascally character!

Iconic role indeed! Without this and Treasure Island, Captain Jack would be quite a different character altogether.

You seem to forget that Robert Newton based his performance on Wallace Beery's interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island character, Long John Silver. Which is a shame really. Beery set a base for the character, and Robert Newton built on and embellished it, to what we know today.

ARRGGGG! Matey your reaching pretty far back on the way back machine to haul out Wallace Beery. I remember him as Bad Bascome but that far out things get very blurry for me. Can't say I remember that version but I can see some pretty crusty old performers there. I may have to try to find something by him to relive some history. Nice handle btw
