I'm also waiting for the answer haha, but from watching, I assumed that the cards might prioritize skills that can be evolved, the lv 5 ones, so I think he waits to get some skills at lv 5 and then collect the cards to ensure the evolution without having to increase a new level. But again, just my interpretation
Yeah I left the cards for when I had skills leveled up to 5 and was trying to make sure I had enough left over since you can't evolve skills otherwise.

and there are also a buff from yummi quests that gives 5% per card picked up so he might want save those for that thing to be at its peak value
