  • I really enjoyed Steve's singing. So I commissioned him to do a rendition of this fantastic song.
John Browns Body performed brilliantly by Steve Waddington.
    His website - www.stevewaddi...
    TH-cam Channel / mrmajstyk
    This rendition is copyrighted.
Lyrics and song written by William Weston Patton, an influential abolitionist and pastor, composed his "The New John Brown Song" in the fall of 1861 and published it in the Chicago Tribune, December 16, 1861. (From Wikipedia)

Old John Brown's body lies a moldering in the grave,
    While weep the sons of bondage whom he ventured all to save;
But though he sleeps his life was lost while struggling for the slave,
    His soul is marching on.
    (Chorus:)
    Glory Hallelujah! ×3
    His soul is marching on.
John Brown was a hero, undaunted, true and brave,
    And Kansas knew his valor when he fought her rights to save;
And now, though the grass grows green above his grave,
    His soul is marching on.
    (Chorus)
He captured Harper's Ferry, with his nineteen men so few,
And frightened "Old Virginny" till she trembled through and through
They hung him for a traitor, themselves a traitor crew,
But his soul is marching on.
    (Chorus)
John Brown was John the Baptist of the Christ we are to see-
Christ who of the bondmen shall the Liberator be,
And soon throughout the Sunny South the slaves shall all be free,
For his soul is marching on.
    (Chorus)
The conflict that he heralded he looks from heaven to view,
On the army of the Union with its flag red, white and blue.
And heaven shall ring with anthems o'er the deed they mean to do,
For his soul is marching on.
    (Chorus)
Ye soldiers of Freedom, then strike, while strike ye may,
The death blow of oppression in a better time and way,
For the dawn of old John Brown has brightened into day,
And his soul is marching on.
    (Chorus)

From when I'm writing this, he died 164 years ago to the day
May this hero's soul indeed march on into the future

Such a beautiful and patriotic song. I'm not a Christian but damn if this doesn't give me respect for those who found their way to such a righteous cause through their faith.

John Brown did nothing wrong. Well, he let pathetic traitors have a brief victory....but that's why we have Sherman.

Sherman was a racist who purposely killed and got escaped slaves killed and if Browns raid was successful it ended abolition as the Haiti type horrors of the rebellion would have destroyed any empathy people had for the enslaved

Not to justify Desalines, he was a monster and what he did was unjustifiably evil, but you might want to read some Haitian history. The most severe atrocities of the Haitian wars of independence were (1) the slave society itself and (2) the Leclerc expedition. But white supremacists in Europe and particularly the pre-war south didn't want to talk about those did they.

I remember this song as a kid at a family reunion. Had no idea all these years this song was about John. 91 Bishop / Brown....about 50 people and funny yellow T shirts. It was a water park in Oregon. Great uncle and his family moved to Canada post ww2 and still has Johns Bible.
