Select object and press "Keypad .", it will move camera close to selected object, works in edit mode as well with selected vertices and faces. Another method is to press Shift-B, and draw a region on 3d viewport with a mouse. It will move a viewport camera to objects in a drawn region.

Yes, that's handy too if you want to snap your view to a specific area or model.
But it's a bit tedious if you have to do that over and over again I think ;)

Can't you rotate at all or is it just super slow?
