Cool stuff. I was thinking about adding a vintage cassette deck to my current Hi-Fi system. I remember when the cassette was the state of the art medium for listening to music. It was such a portable format. You could play it in the car, in the parking lot, just minutes after buying it at the store ; take it home and pop it into your Hi-Fi system. The best thing was, it really sounded good.
These are very good. Please share your videos on restoration. The Akai brand is going to take off in value in ten years or so. This is because they were the most modern looking for their time.
i got a nice sony tape deck from a charity shop for 10 pounds.which i had kept my old chrome tapes. in UK we still say we tape music and video when recording even when no tape is used
I got a pioneer the rubber bands had turned to sticky black gum, to replace the band it almost needs totally dismantling, so I haven’t fixed yet possibly never will
I must say, I really like this guy! I haven't even seen half the video yet and I just dig his demeanor. He's kind and not vulgar or phony from what I see so far. And that goes a long way in my book! RIght now gasoline here is at long-time low prices - I filled up my truck today for $1.28/gallon. Doing the conversion that's 2.86 krona per litre. Back around 2006-2007 our gas was nearly what you're paying now though - well over $4/gallon. Nice score by the way!

Great buy Otto for just 100 euros. I'd have taken 'em too. It's funny, even though the 1980s cassettes generally sound better, it seems that the 70s units with the VU meters sell better in my area. Hope you make a good profit from them. See ya -- Atco
+atco21117 The 80s ones aren't as great and well built as the 70's ones. Some 80s decks might sound better than some cheaper 70's ones, however the high-end 70's Japanese decks do have LP quality if they're maintained.

I’m looking for a cassette tape player/recorder that can play special tapes. The tapes have the vocal on one track and the instrumental part on the other track. With this player/recorder, you can play the vocal alone, or the instrumental part alone, or both together. I don’t think such tapes are made anymore, but I would be willing to buy the player/recorder to make use of the special tapes in my collection. Any idea where I can find such a cassette recorder?
Quabledistocficklepo Sounds like you are looking for a "multitrack" tape deck. They were also called "4 track" recorders. They record on side a and side b of the tape at the same time. This is the format they use in music studios (except using large open reel to reel tapes). "Tascam" made a lot of these and you can still find them on eBay. Also the tapes were not really special tapes. They would have to be a "high bias" (type II) to get a quality recoding but they were usually standard tapes. Just be aware that some multitrack cassette recorders would run that tape a faster speed to get an even higher quality recording. Some of the Tascam : portastudio recorders would record/play at a faster speed. Just make sure if you find a unit , it will run at the speed you prefer.

Are you talking about top and bottom or are you saying they are what I had thought; that is, all recording on the same side, say, top of the tape but one track to left and the other to the right? Is it a matter of two tracks on the same side of the tape but one for vocal and one for band, or is the vocal on, say, the bottom of the tape and the band on the top?
Quabledistocficklepo I'm referring to the side as the direction of the tape. Normally a tape can be played in 2 directions (side A & side B) using 2 tracks at the same time. This is how you get stereo (or 2 channels / left and right). With multitrack, the tape is recorded and played in one direction only. It will use all 4 tracks at the same time (left and right on side A & left and right on side B). This allows you to record (example) vocals, drums, guitar and bass guitar on each track separately. Then all 4 can be played back at the same time. You can also listen to them individually too by turning up or down the volumes on each of the 4 tracks. These 4 tracks will be in mono (heard from both speakers but not technically true stereo but in duel mono). All cassettes have 4 tracks. Normal cassette recorders / players only use 2 of these tracks at a time. Multitrack recorders / players allow you to use all 4 at the same time. Edit: multitrack will only play the tape left to right. You will not use the the tape right to left after recording on it left to right.

your collection is very impressive.but i don.t see u have any sharp sg22o or the sharpsg222 black face stereo cassette.record player. these players are like diamonds .they can call for high prices.and are very reliable .

I have a question I was wondering about for like 30 years :) Back in the day, 'they' said that it does not make sense simply to buy the brand of tape you best like or someone else says is best, because the tape deck manufacturer had "measured in" any particular model to work best with a certain tape brand and make. Now, I never knew what that was for my deck, and could not find out because the internet was not invented yet; but e.g. a friend of mine knew that he needs TDK SA. Is this really a thing, and can this be changed to any tape I want by a shop? I know, I am probably 30 years late asking this, but anyway... :)
Yes, it is possible to have a technician adjust the bias to favor a particular tape. But unless you had a massive amount of money, probably not worth it. There are very few techs still in existence who even have the equipment, much less the knowledge, required to perform this procedure and unless you were mass-producing a recording it's simply not worth the aggravation. Just find a cassette deck that has a +/- Bias Adjust control, and you can simply adjust the sound to your taste by ear.
