I had the same thought! I was wondering how could he let Shadow fall off so hard as if he didn't even understand his original character in SA2, when Izuka's Favorite Game is SA2. However, agreed! It is the best game and probably always will be. I wouldn't mind being wrong on that one, though!
I feel like Shadow doesn’t care about his looks per say but does have a soft spot for certain individuals that probably remind him of Maria like Amy or Cream. Considering Amy was the one who brought him back to his old self it makes sense. He probably used the social status front as an excuse for why he cared to get Amy a gift. It all lines up considering his lack of care for companionship besides team dark.

From what it looks like with Frontiers and Prime, it seems to me that they're trying to LOCK IN so to speak the character personalities going forward. Sonic Frontiers, the movies, they all did a really good job in resetting Sonic from his Meta Era self to what we see him now. Sonic Prime did a really, REALLY good job in course correcting Shadow. But it all really counts on how SonicxShadow Generations sticks that landing. If that game can really get a hold of Shadow's personality, then I think Shadow would be in for a good time moving forward. And us as well.
I'm glad they made it definitive that he hasn't truly forgotten Maria, and is protecting the planet she once loved because he knows she would've wanted to see it. He has left behind the baggage of his past as a government superweapon, not the motivation of protecting the world his lost sister figure once admired. Who knows, maybe the reason he specifically cared for how Amy saw him is because she subconsciously reminded him of Maria, and that's why he specifically had a soft spot there. (And of course I would assume he trusts Rouge and Omega more than anyone else. Not sure about "love" or even care, but it's a form of trust strong enough it could very well be love in its own way)
It feels like the position is "reboot to SA2 Shadow" and frankly, yes, that's what we needed. They dropped the ball after SA2 and going back to his roots has been the answer for decades.

I'm pretty sure Shiro Maekawa is the one responsible for Shadow's best characterization. I think Izuka is why Shadow was done so horribly in his spin-off game. In other words, Izuka may have created Shadow, but he seems to not understand why he's popular in first place. I think Izuka originally wanted Shadow to be truly evil and to be Sonic's opposite and greatest rival, but Maekawa got to write his character instead.
I dont understand why its hard for people to reconcile both facts: shadow moved on from his past AND keeps the promise. To me its clear he moves on from the trauma, anger and chains that hold him while keeping the good parts and using them to build his new convictions. Its clear in 06 that Marias will transformed him to the point where Marias wish is HIS wish now, for his own sake and the people he loves.
Maria’s wish becoming his wish is a nice way to look at it, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is still motivated by something that originally came from Maria and she still remains a strong presence in his heart. He moved on from the spiral of turmoil that had him lose his way and purpose, but nowhere is it ever stated he moved on from Maria or his promise to her. I can recognise why both sides of the argument think the way they do though and I guess that’s the beauty of perception.
As another commenter brought up, in the same way that in SA2 he made a mad dash to rescue Rouge before the island exploded (the White Jungle theme even paints a picture of him having a panic attack during said mad dash), only to then afterwards try to shrug off Rouge pointing out him saving her as not being the case - that he was simply going for the Emerald and nothing more. So I too think that claiming to Amy, Tails and Barry (MC) his getting the concert tickets for her birthday was him just being worried for his kinda non-existent social status, was just an excuse. Earlier on he had made another by claiming he only played Super Monkey Ball to "obliterate" Knuckles and Vector when originally Knuckles said Shadow did it to show them how to play it. Thus believe the big takeaway here is that Shadow is one to try portraying himself as a guy who will come up with any arbitrary reason to get out of admitting to doing something legitimately nice for someone, especially someone he may deep down consider a friend. And for this someone being Amy, no matter whether or not the game is canon, it seems in character for him to accept her birthday invite, get dressed up for the occasion, then go out of his way to really try and get her a birthday present upon realizing the custom after seeing everyone else with one. They say actions speak louder than words, and while he did once joined in on Sonic's birthday I don't think he bothered going so far as to get a gift for a frenemy - which suggests him going through so much trouble to keep it a surprise, and all at the risk of looking so suspicious he might get accused of murder for it, speaks volumes to just how much of a big soft spot he really does have for her. (Reposting this in case it didn't go through the first time.)
I'm honestly pretty excited. The last time I was excited for a Sonic game was Generations. Im truly looking forward for this and hope for Sonic to be even better in the future
For Sonic X Shadow Generations, I do hope they go far and beyond with this one. Make it more than just a little add-on and give us some polished work. Also please no day one glitches. For the movie, while this can go almost anyway, I feel they should sprinkle some Maria and Shadow flashbacks of just their wholesome and peaceful moments before the raid. Even if it’s just a simple game between them.
6:55 Quick question but what was even wrong with Shadow after 06? He wasnt in Unleashed, or Colors. He had a paragraph of dialouge in Generations 2011 so there could be a cool Shadow Boss fight. He wasnt in Lost World. Sonic Boom was a spinoff parody. And he pretty well written in Forces. So I NEVER understood the Shadow in 2010s was mischaracterized. He wasn't even there. The reason his backstory was never delved into is simply there wasnt a reason to delve into it in context of the story. Edit: Twitter Takeovers don't count.

Shadow (and literally every other character to be fair) was not written well in Forces. Gens was a giant missed opportunity on the writing front so again, the cast as a whole suffers there. His lack of appearances post 06 is both a blessing and a curse with how lack luster the writing in those games are no matter what characters appeared (the Rivals duology being the rare exception funnily enough) . Silver faced a similar issue too, while Blaze just hasn't gotten to come back at all in the games to do anything.
Besides Sonic Boom, the IDW books (which are apparently canon to the games) is the worst offender. Hes just this angry snarling moron that doesn't care about his friends well being. There was also that trailer for the team racing game, where he again doesn't care about his friends and steals food from a chao.

Sure its a lesser note and, is just meant to be silly. But that is how they wanted to depict him, and that depiction resembles what they were doing in the IDW books.
I like to think another reason why Shadow is a hedgehog is because after Gerald saw the mural he brought this up with Black Doom who also knew about the mural and even the hedgehog race, so had an old DNA sample of the hedgehog race to create Shadow.
Well, since somewhere from Frontiers appears in his campaign it’s entirely possible! Whether or not the next game will be called “Frontiers 2” or have anything to do with the StarFall Islands or not though I can’t say. It definitely has a good likelihood of teasing the next game though.

In the shadow the hedgehog manga the bio lizard and shadow did meet but the bio lizard was controlled and half the size, shadow acknowledged the lizard as another specimen along with him, I think shadow did show sympathy in the end because the lizard was always controlled and he would feel better ending its life to end its existence and suffering
My question is when and why did Shadow regain his old memories? Shadow was suppose to have lost them after SA2 which gave his supposed death a little weight as the person he was in SA2 was essentially dead and Shadow (the Game) was about him trying to relearn them only to give up on it at the end and move on. That's what I love about most about Shadow's character to forgive, forget, and move forward. I much prefer his motiviation to protect the planet to be his own motivation rather than for Maria which he shouldnt remember. IDK maybe it's a me thing but things like Sonic 06 show there's more motivation and complexity behind his character than just Maria.
We say that as if they haven't basically played the Maria card since 2021 and that's just what they're sticking with. I kind of hope it does get addressed properly in Shadow Generations since I don't see Shadow coming into the spotlight as big as he is now relatively soon after.
What’s the issue with shadow in forces? He was really good there. Fighting against eggmans army to win the world back and working with everyone to achieve that goal. His fight with infinite and the jackal squad also makes sense so I’m confused.
Also in Japanese shadow and everyone else never went through horrible mischaracterization so that’s most likely why Izuka did nothin in terms for the English version? Idk it’s odd that in the US characters were changed while in JP they stayed the same.

I’ve seen ppl not like him in the game because he kills the jackal squad but shadows never been against that? Even in Sonic X who is written by sonic team during the series prime in writing (Maekawa, yoshimura ect) have shadow threaten to eliminate anyone who gets in his way or threaten the world.
I have my issues with Shadow in Sonic X too. And while Shadow is definitely a character who could be pushed to kill if absolutely necessary, it completely flies in the face of the Shadow he grew into by the end of 06. The confused rage monster side of him was dealt with and he grew from it. He became the calm head in the room and a voice of reason/logic. He will also kick ass if the situation calls for it. In Forces he was a smack talking “Stay out of my way I’ll do this my way” cringe-lord. Just my opinion though, it’s ok if people like it and disagree with me.

I think these elements are cool in shadow they reinstate something nobody else in the cast offers. The anti hero type. Someone who does good but might have to do “bad” things to do it.

Did you know that in the 5th takeover, Shadow claims that Doom’s Eye is still alive? Sega said everything is canon, and Shadow eating coffee beans 🫘 started in the 3rd takeover and was confirmed in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (Barry taking to Shadow in the first cart before the actual mystery). Will the game confirm that Doom’s Eye really was alive the whole time is a question I can’t wait to see answered.
I can only hope other Sonic characters get the same treatment, love, and care done right I’m hoping for Blaze the Cat to go back to her Sonic Rush root and the 06 never happen ever again don’t want her to be with silver but be her own character 😡 she deserves way better than what she got done.
I can see him actually putting his past behind him in 05 but maybe after the events in Shadow Gens and Black Doom messing with his mind and whatever will make him remember about Maria and his promise and his purpose for existing is, and go back to keeping his word for the most part while still accepting everything that he went through and such, if you get what I mean.
Hopefully we will get proper remakes of SA1 and SA2 someday with the same physics as the original games. The graphics in both games - especially SA1 - look pretty outdated by today’s standards. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the original Sonic Adventure games are available on any current generation console unless you factor in the Steam releases.
Would love to see them remastered with the same physics and original voice actors but I think a remake would see a lot of that change. As for the games being available on modern consoles, both SA1DX and SA2 are available on Xbox Series through backward compatibility. Would still be good to see native ports for all new consoles though!
2:35 Lore-wise, I don't quite think so. Sonic and Silver may be colossal juggernauts, but Amy (and the avatar character, I guess) certainly isn't. She needed several adventures just to begin to prove herself. And Shadow is a eugenic test tube baby, so he shouldn't count. Plus, there's a whooping 200 year gap between those aforementioned hedgehog prodigies. I think hedgehogs are just like any other anthropomorphic species. For every Sonic or Blaze, there are countless other Amys or Bigs.
Erm… Amy has the ability to interpret Tarot cards and is compassionate enough to shift the minds of Eggman Robots and the Ultimate Life Form. I said powerful or remarkable. The Avatar character is meaningless since it could also be other animals. You can interpret it another way if you like. But every Hedgehog we are introduced to in the mainline games is special, and combined with the murals on Angel Island, are all good reasons to create Shadow as a Hedgehog.

In Japan, girls around her age commonly develop interest in it for whatever reason. That detail is naturally missed/lost in other countries.
Except her ability to read them predicted her meeting Sonic for the first time in Sonic CD and has become relevant to her character again more recently. You don’t have to agree that is remarkable but I think it is. Either way, my point on Hedgehogs is my own view and the point still stands in my mind.

I am going to be honest, I hope Keanu signed on for only one Sonic movie because I think Shadow sacrificing himself in Sonic Movie 3 and then not coming back to life is the perfect way to do justice to Shadow's story. I loved Shadow and his story in Sonic Adventure 2 precisely because I felt at the time the game originally came out that Shadow's sacrifice was permanent. But then they brought him back to life just to cash in on his popularity even though bringing him back to life was apparently not their original plan. So if Shadow doesn't permanently sacrifice himself at the end of Sonic Movie 3 and Paramount brings Shadow back for more Sonic movies just to turn Shadow into Discount Vegeta again, then Sonic Movie 3 would have been a waste in my eyes.

When it comes to mainline, shadows, character was never ruined. He was good and forces. generations He only had like one line and that wasn’t even shadow that was past shadow along with the fact that now there’s shadow generations and everything else wasn’t main lines so it doesn’t matter that much but shadow was actually written good in forces. He even had actual dynamic with team dark and cared for a rouge and omega and smiled at the end of the game. Forces wrote shadow better than IDW.

And for this someone being Amy, no matter whether or not the game is canon, it seems in character for him to accept her birthday invite, get dressed up for the occasion, then go out of his way to really try and get her a birthday present upon realizing the custom after seeing everyone else with one.
They say actions speak louder than words, and while he did once joined in on Sonic's birthday I don't think he bothered going so far as to get a gift for a frenemy - which suggests him going through so much trouble to keep it a surprise, and all at the risk of looking so suspicious he might get accused of murder for it, speaks volumes to just how much of a big soft spot he really does have for her.

For the movie, while this can go almost anyway, I feel they should sprinkle some Maria and Shadow flashbacks of just their wholesome and peaceful moments before the raid. Even if it’s just a simple game between them.
6:55 Quick question but what was even wrong with Shadow after 06? He wasnt in Unleashed, or Colors. He had a paragraph of dialouge in Generations 2011 so there could be a cool Shadow Boss fight. He wasnt in Lost World. Sonic Boom was a spinoff parody. And he pretty well written in Forces. So I NEVER understood the Shadow in 2010s was mischaracterized. He wasn't even there. The reason his backstory was never delved into is simply there wasnt a reason to delve into it in context of the story.

Go check out my “Why Shadow is Important” video. I make my case for the issue with Shadow in the 2010s there. Also, boom is an alternate universe parody because it failed. If it had taken off you can bet your ass they’d have stuck with that format going forward.
Shadow (and literally every other character to be fair) was not written well in Forces. Gens was a giant missed opportunity on the writing front so again, the cast as a whole suffers there. His lack of appearances post 06 is both a blessing and a curse with how lack luster the writing in those games are no matter what characters appeared (the Rivals duology being the rare exception funnily enough) . Silver faced a similar issue too, while Blaze just hasn't gotten to come back at all in the games to do anything.
Besides Sonic Boom, the IDW books (which are apparently canon to the games) is the worst offender. Hes just this angry snarling moron that doesn't care about his friends well being.
There was also that trailer for the team racing game, where he again doesn't care about his friends and steals food from a chao.
@@Havik61 With IDW, that was out of the writers' hands (the depictions do get better as it goes on imo) and the TSR animation is meant for laughs so taking it too seriously kinda goes against the point.

As for the racing trailer. Sure its a lesser note and, is just meant to be silly. But that is how they wanted to depict him, and that depiction resembles what they were doing in the IDW books.
I like to think another reason why Shadow is a hedgehog is because after Gerald saw the mural he brought this up with Black Doom who also knew about the mural and even the hedgehog race, so had an old DNA sample of the hedgehog race to create Shadow.

Well, since somewhere from Frontiers appears in his campaign it’s entirely possible! Whether or not the next game will be called “Frontiers 2” or have anything to do with the StarFall Islands or not though I can’t say. It definitely has a good likelihood of teasing the next game though.

Btw, there's a manga about Sonic X Shadow generations; it released its first chapter this month, but I don't know how tied it is to the game. In the shadow the hedgehog manga the bio lizard and shadow did meet but the bio lizard was controlled and half the size, shadow acknowledged the lizard as another specimen along with him, I think shadow did show sympathy in the end because the lizard was always controlled and he would feel better ending its life to end its existence and suffering

My question is when and why did Shadow regain his old memories? Shadow was suppose to have lost them after SA2 which gave his supposed death a little weight as the person he was in SA2 was essentially dead and Shadow (the Game) was about him trying to relearn them only to give up on it at the end and move on. That's what I love about most about Shadow's character to forgive, forget, and move forward. I much prefer his motiviation to protect the planet to be his own motivation rather than for Maria which he shouldnt remember. IDK maybe it's a me thing but things like Sonic 06 show there's more motivation and complexity behind his character than just Maria.

We say that as if they haven't basically played the Maria card since 2021 and that's just what they're sticking with.

What’s the issue with shadow in forces? He was really good there. Fighting against eggmans army to win the world back and working with everyone to achieve that goal. His fight with infinite and the jackal squad also makes sense so I’m confused.
Also in Japanese shadow and everyone else never went through horrible mischaracterization so that’s most likely why Izuka did nothin in terms for the English version? Idk it’s odd that in the US characters were changed while in JP they stayed the same.
I covered my issue with Shadow’s character in Forces in my “Why Shadow is Important” video. Hard to type it out in the comments section so probably best you check it out there. He’s not at his WORST in Forces by any means but for me he is still off.
@@AceCardGaming Ive watched the video before and I like it a lot but tbh I feel like the only issue with him there is that he doesn’t get to do much. I’ve seen ppl not like him in the game because he kills the jackal squad but shadows never been against that? Even in Sonic X who is written by sonic team during the series prime in writing (Maekawa, yoshimura ect) have shadow threaten to eliminate anyone who gets in his way or threaten the world.
I have my issues with Shadow in Sonic X too. And while Shadow is definitely a character who could be pushed to kill if absolutely necessary, it completely flies in the face of the Shadow he grew into by the end of 06. The confused rage monster side of him was dealt with and he grew from it. He became the calm head in the room and a voice of reason/logic. He will also kick ass if the situation calls for it. In Forces he was a smack talking “Stay out of my way I’ll do this my way” cringe-lord.
Just my opinion though, it’s ok if people like it and disagree with me.

Though I’m curious then on how you feel on Izuka saying he’d like to revisit those moments where shadow is seen as the bad guy like in Sonic X S3. Him fighting for what he deems right and necessary but that also conflicting with sonic and everyone else. I think these elements are cool in shadow they reinstate something nobody else in the cast offers. The anti hero type. Someone who does good but might have to do “bad” things to do it.

Did you know that in the 5th takeover, Shadow claims that Doom’s Eye is still alive? Sega said everything is canon, and Shadow eating coffee beans 🫘 started in the 3rd takeover and was confirmed in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (Barry taking to Shadow in the first cart before the actual mystery). Will the game confirm that Doom’s Eye really was alive the whole time is a question I can’t wait to see answered.
I can only hope other Sonic characters get the same treatment, love, and care done right I’m hoping for Blaze the Cat to go back to her Sonic Rush root and the 06 never happen ever again don’t want her to be with silver but be her own character 😡 she deserves way better than what she got done.

I can see him actually putting his past behind him in 05 but maybe after the events in Shadow Gens and Black Doom messing with his mind and whatever will make him remember about Maria and his promise and his purpose for existing is, and go back to keeping his word for the most part while still accepting everything that he went through and such, if you get what I mean.
Hopefully we will get proper remakes of SA1 and SA2 someday with the same physics as the original games. The graphics in both games - especially SA1 - look pretty outdated by today’s standards. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think the original Sonic Adventure games are available on any current generation console unless you factor in the Steam releases.
Would love to see them remastered with the same physics and original voice actors but I think a remake would see a lot of that change. As for the games being available on modern consoles, both SA1DX and SA2 are available on Xbox Series through backward compatibility. Would still be good to see native ports for all new consoles though!

Sonic and Silver may be colossal juggernauts, but Amy (and the avatar character, I guess) certainly isn't. She needed several adventures just to begin to prove herself. And Shadow is a eugenic test tube baby, so he shouldn't count. Plus, there's a whooping 200 year gap between those aforementioned hedgehog prodigies.
I think hedgehogs are just like any other anthropomorphic species. For every Sonic or Blaze, there are countless other Amys or Bigs.
Erm… Amy has the ability to interpret Tarot cards and is compassionate enough to shift the minds of Eggman Robots and the Ultimate Life Form. I said powerful or remarkable. The Avatar character is meaningless since it could also be other animals.
You can interpret it another way if you like. But every Hedgehog we are introduced to in the mainline games is special, and combined with the murals on Angel Island, are all good reasons to create Shadow as a Hedgehog.

In Japan, girls around her age commonly develop interest in it for whatever reason. That detail is naturally missed/lost in other countries.
Except her ability to read them predicted her meeting Sonic for the first time in Sonic CD and has become relevant to her character again more recently. You don’t have to agree that is remarkable but I think it is. Either way, my point on Hedgehogs is my own view and the point still stands in my mind.

I am going to be honest, I hope Keanu signed on for only one Sonic movie because I think Shadow sacrificing himself in Sonic Movie 3 and then not coming back to life is the perfect way to do justice to Shadow's story. I loved Shadow and his story in Sonic Adventure 2 precisely because I felt at the time the game originally came out that Shadow's sacrifice was permanent. But then they brought him back to life just to cash in on his popularity even though bringing him back to life was apparently not their original plan. So if Shadow doesn't permanently sacrifice himself at the end of Sonic Movie 3 and Paramount brings Shadow back for more Sonic movies just to turn Shadow into Discount Vegeta again, then Sonic Movie 3 would have been a waste in my eyes.

When it comes to mainline, shadows, character was never ruined. He was good and forces. generations He only had like one line and that wasn’t even shadow that was past shadow along with the fact that now there’s shadow generations and everything else wasn’t main lines so it doesn’t matter that much but shadow was actually written good in forces. He even had actual dynamic with team dark and cared for a rouge and omega and smiled at the end of the game. Forces wrote shadow better than IDW.

I mean, what's the point of speculating if you have straight clear answers? Isn't it why people theorize in the first place, to find the answers ? If the answers are given, there is no need for theorizing. If people like theorizing in itslef, why waiting for something that potentially has an actual answer to to debate ? It should be able to be anything then if theorizing in itself is a pleasent thing for some people.
People aren’t theorising lore with official answers, they’re theorising lore without answers. Something a lot of creators encourage their fans to do. So what’s your problem exactly? You don’t want people to have fun discussing stuff? 😅
But they're theorizing lore with the mindset that they couldn't ever receive any official answer, which doesn't seem to make that much sense. My problem is that that thing they encourage seems contradictory in itself, theorizing for the sake of theorizing, when the point would be to approach an answer, official or not. I just respectfully don't get what fun there is in discussing something pointlessly. As if receiving the official actual answer would be disappointing. I would be happier not having to discuss stuff if I can directly get the answer to it 🤷♀.
