  • Here's a full from-scratch build of a highly-detailed tiny (much smaller than one tile in game) American-themed island town filled with old-money homes situated on an island where two rivers meet - featuring a cozy main street lined with cafes, restaurants, and specialties, a beautiful marina situated in a bay, and lots of big houses and mansions ranging from many different styles and eras. I contemplated making it a "ONE TILE CITY" build but with this level of detail, that would take forever - Enjoy!

      But I actually liked the separated little builds on different maps.
      When it’s just a little village On a road or rail or river junction you go super over the top in a good way with detail. But as soon as it becomes a bigger project you like everyone hold back with details. I think you should just keep doing little showcases, and if you use 2 spots on one map no harm. Or if you want make a dozen, then copy paste them with move it into one for a little finalé.

    I think a cool backstory for the islands wealth could be that the lumber industry was flourishing in the Dakota falls region and surrounding regions too, the owners of these wood industries started making furniture with their produce. This gained them widespread attraction and profit, since they were such high quality they all became millionaires and set out a plan to develop this island for their stately homes. They wanted it to be very green since they all loved the greenery of this region. A cool name could be Chestnut island :)

    Usually, with lake/waterfront properties, there will be easements every so often for the people across the street and rescue to still have access to the water. It'll be every 3-4 houses across the street having access to one easement on the water side. The easement is effectively a dirt path with a tiny bit of beach and/or boat launch.
    Also, if you want to maintain an older look, you'll leave a few small cottages that haven't sold out amongst the McMansions.

    48:00 how can we show class distinction more. (Watch murder she wrote, really shows the gradations of upper class wealth nicely). One key thing is segmented gardens. So you might have an open green patch at the back door for entertaining, and small 16 tree orchard, you might have a small ‘soccer’ pitch area, a tennis court, a circular patch for entertaining, a tiled area for kids, a flower garden, an area with a chciken coup, or a path down the side of the house to a stables. Or a set of 3 garages with a fancy old car.
    Imagine an activity that would be the wierd quirky thing for this rich person to have na interest in. Even just drop in an annex/shed at the end of the garden, maybe a glass one for showing paintings. Or a garden patch for organic vegetable for their cook to use. I actually imagine hypothetical characters a detective might run into in a murder mystery set in the town. They might find a rich farmer landowner, they might meet a pottering old lady who loves her vegetable patch, children who love the chickens, a small fishing area populated by the working class, who has a daughter that is a chef in one of the big houses.

    The story of Richland Cove:
    Elizabeth Richland was born and raised in Dakota Falls Colorado. Elizabeth went on to become a professor of literature at a local college (maybe incorporated into this area in future episodes). After serving her entire career in Dakota Falls County she retired and bought a small island near the town she grew up in. She then began to develop the island into what is now the prestigious island town of Richland Cove.

A lot of the town names over there ended up just being carried over from Europe, so I looked for rich small towns in the UK, and found Marlow. ~35 miles west of London along the Thames, rich and cute little river community, so it all seems to fit. Hence my suggestion Marlow Landing.

    • @mephInc

      Not even an elitist thing. Anyone who owns waterfront property has it as a getaway from everyone else.

    I think the houses opposite the marina could’ve been different, I feel like it’s one of the least desirable bits of the island, with the bustle of the shops opposite, it might’ve been a good place to put the only or former working class fisherman’s housing. No need to make it deprived, but long established comfortable houses thatve been settled first on the island, and probably because they owned some land or something became mildly wealthy but still fish on the water to sell to the high end restaurant son the isle and send a daily van down to New York City or something.

    Very much enjoying the build. But you didn’t take it in the direction I expected. I was thinking New England old money with class. Like Jessica Fletcher in ‘Murder she wrote’. I feel like the swimming pools were a little misplaced.

    • @Infrastructurist
      @Infrastructurist  ปีที่แล้ว

      You think they wouldn't have swimming pools - or just the placement on the lots? Maybe the lots are also a bit too small tbh :D

    • @MrCalls1
      @MrCalls1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Infrastructurist swimming pools are more ‘new rich’, people that are recently wealthy rather than inherited money, since the houses are old and the area leafy and clearly old in general I think this is a place with old money, and thus would dislike the classlessness of having pools. Rather than going to the sea in a hotter region, or being a proper old money aristocrat and wild swimming in the river. The people who would build a secluded village like this are very snobby they look down upon people who aren’t like them, and really enforce their arbitrary social standards.
      It also doesn’t really match the climate, this area is clearly temperate like Britain / New England sort of weather. You ‘can’ have pools and people do, but it’s exceptionally rare.
      One thing I could say is as a few Markquees (you know the big tent with open sides) in some garden and lay it out like they’re having a a garden party/gathering. Rich people who inherit their wealth love hosting gatherings for other rich people to gossip. Also, ponds aren’t low class. Also it wouldn’t be so odd to see a small 3 hole gold course in a a shared by 2 people back yard. And tbh one of the peninsulas probably should’ve been reserved for a golf course and country club (where they host parties and drink wine with other rich people again).
      Again I love the build as a painting. I just think there’s some class / social dynamics you didn’t quite hit perfectly. Which is understandable and really doesn’t make the island look any less pretty. Just less “accurate” or “realistic? Or whatever.

    I love stuff like this. Wish I had the skill and patience for it. What you made here is similar to the north shore and eastern part of Long Island around the Hamptons. Except the Hampton rich houses are more likely to have private beaches than piers. The north shore water front areas are more like this because of the trees, and the small towns up there are like this but bigger piers for the yachts in the shpping area. Hampton towns are like this, too, with fewer trees and piers and more beaches.

    For an area like this in the US, not having sidewalks by the houses isn't that uncommon. Also, since it's isolated residential, there's not a lot of traffic, and people will just walk on the road itself, moving onto the shoulder if there is traffic. Lastly, pedestrian walkability and public transportation in general are just not a huge concern in small town USA.

    That at-grade crossing would never happen- super, super dangerous especially since the southbound traffic has no light (?) and left turning traffic from the island would be turning directly onto a freeway. Probably a simple diamond would be more realistic - those are all over the place in the mountains in colorado
