This is great! I do love oil pastels and the Sennelier are fantastic. I have found that using Arches watercolor paper and a watercolor underpainting sped up the process for me but I am painfully slow and distracted easily. Lol. Thanks for sharing.
Your moon had such wonderful depth to it. It just looked so physically palpable to me. Love your work and style! I also just loved seeing you delve into using oil pastels as an art medium.
I personally really enjoy using oil pastels and colored pencils together. The scraping tip was invaluable. I was shocked when I first started using oil pastels to see how well oms worked with oil pastels. I so enjoy it and it feels so rewarding to have the oil pastels fill in all of the nooks, crannies, and crevices so quickly with the oms. The payoff is nearly instant. Then when I go back in for detail with colored pencil, it’s just wonderful. It takes so much less time and effort to get what I believe to be even better work than just using colored pencils alone.
For example, it might take two or three layers of using an oil pastel on an area in a picture in order to get full coverage whereas, with just using colored pencils, it might take 11 layers in order to get the full effect that oil pastels would give. On top of that, colored pencils have such a small point that covering an entire surface with them might take hours and hours and hours whereas, with oil pastels as you pointed out, full and complete coverage might take only minutes. It might just be me, but I’m really into a bigger payoff for less effort and less time. But some people really enjoy the long process of only using colored pencils. So I’m not one to say my way is best. It just is for me.
Here are three things I wanted to address that maybe weren’t covered in the video: I found that using any regular fixative that I would use for colored pencil paintings works just as well for the oil pastel paintings. Of course, I was working on smaller test areas when I did it and had not let the oil pastels cure for a few months as is normally recommended. But it still doesn’t smudge at all after applying the fixative from what I’ve seen even after several months have passed by.
In addition, from what I have come to understand, there are different hardnesses (for lack of a better word...”words are hard”...smile) to oil pastels, like soft pastels. Thus, applying them has to be done in order: The harder pastels should be applied on the bottom layers whereas the softer pastels should be applied on the top layers. What you have on this video are soft pastels and some of the most expensive kinds. The cheaper harder oil pastels can be applied on the bottom and then the softer more expensive oil pastels (like are used in this video) can be applied on the top. That way, you will be able to get better coverage on the bottom layers covering the paper or canvas completely since the harder oil pastels aren’t quite so translucent. But the softer oil pastels on top allow some of those layers of color below to show through. So the translucency gives it more depth, like with your moon.
Also, you can get the splattered look for stars easily by cutting off a tiny hunk of an oil pastel stick and placing it in a smallish container and adding some oms to it then stirring it until the mixture has a paint-like consistency. You can dip a normal painting brush or toothbrush in the mixture and use it, then, to splatter the white over the sky like you would any other paint on a surface in order to get the star effect. You can do the splatter effect like that with any other color as well. If you want some of those splattered stars to be more white or to have halos around them, you can always go back over the stars with a normal oil pastel stick or colored pencils.

I used Paul Reuben and Michael's brand (Gallery) to create a large (18" x 24") poster for my daughter's dance production. Using oil pastels for figure work was a challenge! But I love the color intensity when you layer them.

I use Mungyo oil pastels for most of my bottom layers. I save my softer Sennelier pastels for the last layers, fat over lean. I love your videos, just joined MeWe to follow you there.

Sennelier Oil Pastels are my favorite. They were the first brand of professional grade pastels I got, same with their line of watercolor paint. I’ve never used that paper but I have found that I like working on sanded paper or adding pastel ground to paper and working that way.
I’ve never tried blending with oms though so I may have to try that.

Oil pastels I'm using now: proArt and Pentel, both from yard sales. Ive bought 4 singles of Sennelier, all in fancy metallic colors. Just wonderful. Im puttng the lower grade ones on base layers.

Thanks for the video. I'm going to try this painting. I've used oil pastels a few times but only the student grade. I always wanted to try senellier but they're so expensive. I recently bought a new brand Soho extra soft and wow! There is definitely a learning curve. I think they're even softer than senellier
I use crayons and OMS to establish an under painting. It saves oil pastels as well as provides a smooth baseline

Hi there. OMS is Oderless Mineral Spirits. I didn't hear the initials myself till this video. But i have been recently studying oil pastels (OP). Coming from a watercolor tradition, the idea of a solvent is very interesting. I tried linseedcoil recently but it soaked through the paper @artistmark6561
The first time in a while, I used Sennelier and Mungo, the latter is a bit more firm but softer than student grade, but a nice moderate. Used the mungo for the base layers. I should play with oil pastels more.
What type of fixative or varnish do you use? It's a question, thank you for your video and your answer.

I love my oil pastels but havnt made the leap into professional level on the oil pastels yet. Struggling a little still with the Faber Castell oil pastels and the Pentel. They are pretty cheap though. I should totally try to use them more with oms.
Oms can make a HUGE difference! :D
I love oil pastels, I use Rolphes pastels. I struggle with soft pastels.
You used the term OMS, what does it stand for? is it the same or similar to baby-oil?

It can work but it is much lighter weight than I like.

I'm not sure tbh, it's really slick after the fixative. I would recommend contacting the manufacturer to ask that one.
The fixative looks suspiciously like acrylic sealer. Looks great though. I love oil pastel, especially for plein air.
So do you ever demo NOT using OMS? I stopped using oil paint because I developed an allergy to it.
Yes, when I work with pan pastels and colored pencil I don't usually use OMS. Then of course other mediums like acrylics I don't use it at all :) For oil pastels and colored pencil without panpastels I always use OMS though.
