The importance of Olenna's speech was truely underestimated back in season 7. She was the first who suggested Daenerys to be ruthless, to embrice herself for what she really is, to lead as the Targaryen bloodline impose. Due to the fact that House Targaryen has Valeryan blood and magic roots, madness and hunger for power are her destiny and downfall, even if Dany tried to be "more than that" ("more than mother of dragons"). The phrase "let it be fear, then" was so meaningful: she has always wanted to be loved from people (those times are the best moments for her character development, she is compassionate and kind there). And now, in Westeros, she’s spent all this time fighting for people she thought should love her, and when she realizes they never will, she’s willing to let their world burn to punish them. As Olenna said: "[here in Westeros] they won't obey you unless they fear you". So, at the end, love and fear have the same value in her eyes. There's no middle ground.

If they wanted to deviate from George's work dramatically, then they should have done that from the beginning.
I'm not going to lie, this clip actually helped support the shows decision, to do what they did in episode 5. It seems less 'unsupported' and 'coming from nowhere' as it shows her true nature throughout the series. Well done on the video.
Except it still came out of nowhere. Everything that causes her to be alone and angry happened in a few episodes. This wasn't a series long descent. Jorrah, Missandei, her dragons all died in 6 episode span. This could've have beeen way better written and if GRRM decides to finish the series, it will be.
Or maybe it just shows her desperation? When you try your best but everything keeps falling apart, when the world turns out to be nothing you hoped it to be... It really makes one destructive.
@@adamtak3128 You state that it came out of nowhere. Fair enough. But everything and all the people she worked/cared for, were taken away from her. And the Mad King never even managed to "burn them all"... Not just that, but the population of King's Landing has probably grown significantly since his rule. Daenerys literally became worse than Aerys ever was.
Yet she burned them anyway. The mad king never managed to actually “burn them all” but she did. She became worse than him. Doesn’t matter if she laughed or enjoyed it because they all burned to death anyways.
@M P Dragon's don't surrender, they burn things down hence fire and blood. After all did we forget that Yara thought the same thing? Danny is a dragon, and dragons destroy their enemies root and stem. It's not foreign ether, Danny did this with all of Slaver's Bay. Literally the one reason no one complained then was because they were slavers and the city still stood.
The most iconic character on this show. Not the fairytale hero you root for because it’s *expected* of you without any real need for thought. A multidimensional masterpiece. RIP to the one true Queen, not of the Iron Throne, but of this entire series.
This was actually built up since season 2. Daenerys has ALWAYS had mad queen tendencies and a love for "justice" aka murdering those who wronged her. As her dragons grew she started using more and more fire (just like her father) and this "plot twist" was acutally calculated. The only thing D&D did right. She’s always my queen. So many people see her as the villain. But nobody sees everything she gave for her country. All of her friends. Two of her dragons. Her hand betrayed her. She did everything she could to circumvent violence. And in the end violence was her only choice. Every choice before that led to every loss she’d ever had. Her own brother betrayed her. Nobody could go through everything she did and not come out broken on the other side
So true, but in the end, when she saw that she won the final war and heard the bell, she had an option to just kill cersei or destroy the castle. But she killed innocents and destroyed the entire city. I still love her but when she heard the bell, if she had stopped there and waited for her army to conquer the city, she would have lived and ruled westeros, which is a happy ending for me :((((
Basically everyone followed her as a hero but in reality some heroes end up tragically doing bad things in the name of their cause. Jaime was trying to reform himself and be his best self with a woman who was positive for him, Brienne, but like so many he couldn’t overcome his addiction to a negative toxic partner. Jon was the classic leader and hero who didn’t want to be a hero but he got a relatively quiet unglamorous ending unlike most of these fantasy heroes. Basically George RR Martin wanted to break fantasy and narrative tropes in Game of Thrones and he did just that. There’s a beautiful realism to his story because things didn’t work out perfect nor even as expected for most characters, just as life never works out as expected
Sopia I think that what she meant when she said that violence was Danaerys only choice was that it was her only choice in her mind to achieve her life goal of taking the iron throne back for a Targaryen. She didn’t have to kill the innocent civilians but she did it to send a message to the rest of Westeros to fear her. She says clearly at the end of the season, “I don’t have love here I only have fear” especially combined with Jon’s rightful claim to the throne she felt her grip on the throne would be very weak if she didn’t make Westeros fear her. The KL massacre was notice to rest of Westeros, look at what I can do, don’t try and take the throne away from me or your cities will be next. However of course it backfired because she never expected her former lover and nephew Jon would kill her.

Daenerys had always been a monster. She had not rational thinking, no wisdom, she was very impulsive, innocent, obssesed with power, and never wanted to questionate herself, but only believing in power as fear or submission. The ideals she had weren't well justified, as she didn't know how to do the right thing without attaching only to basic moral concernings. She was too dependent, and when she felt that she was losing, no could stop her because they weren't able to see the magnitude of her problem, so she did what her father did when he felt like he was losing his power. She was going to do it sooner or later. The cruel reality it's that innocence is equal as pure evil.
I wish they had either added another season or made more episodes. Her descent into madness was too quick for my liking. I do like the poetics of the situation though. Two Targaryens born at around the same time, 50/50 chance for greatness or madness for both Jon and Daenerys.
She was always like this when things didn't go the way she wanted. Her advisor were the ones who made her sane. @Not Alfie That’s the classic poor justification mix, but it still doesn’t make sense. The writing is unjustifiable. Being hot headed and impulsive has nothing to do with it. That’s not what madness or evil is. In fact evil is cold and calculating. Like Cersei or Littlefinger. Or Sansa in season 8. Arya baked a cake with Frey’s sons. Sansa fed the dogs with Ramsey. I find that far worse than any death Daenerys has ever executed. Much greater perversity and cruelty. None of the people Daenerys killed were innocent. So you can’t justify it either. She didn’t kill civilians or innocents in 81 episodes. Madness or evil take years to complete. Nobody gets like that in a week. She had already lost her son, her husband and her people in one day. It doesn’t make any sense.
@Not Alfie Madness doesn’t work that way. It’s so ridiculous. She goes crazy in one episode, but she forgives Tyrion for a sudden death and still loves Jon. Also Drogon doesn't kill Snow and the unsullied neither. hahaha Season 8 is low-quality humor.

That's the point of the last season: It is supposed to be provocative and unconventional.
It was always believable. Those threads are. All. There. This video just puts them together in a shorter timeline. Its built to be what it is, it's written as a tragic villain origin story, and its superbly executed. People are upset and heartbroken because they're supposed to be. Because we loved Dany and ignored all the signs of cruelty and ruthlessness. It's a gloriously written Shakespearean tragedy of a character.
Slain thank god im not the only one thinkin that way ... I was actually shocked how many people acting surprised right now and even complain that it’s completely random that she became the „mad queen“
Her mind was poisoned by the desire of power and revenge of her brother Viserys. At the very beginning she only wanted to live a peaceful and easy life in Pentos, her aspirations changed after marrying khal Drogo. Daenerys wanted to become the Targaryen Queen, the last heir to the Iron Throne and to her House, and a beloved saviour and ruler - she created an image of herself, which she worshipped: an embodiment of Just Power. It was when she saw, that Cersei's lies about "the Mad King's daughter" were believed by the people in the south and that Jon's reputation combined with his rightful claim (even despite him not wanting any power) would cause people and lords of Westeros to strongly support him - it was then, when Daenerys realized, than the only way to fulfill her dream, her "destiny" - was to become a Power, if not Loved, so be it Feared. Innocent people she willingly killed, were a sacrifice she made, to make her position unquestioned in the eyes of whole Westeros and the whole world.
Nice job putting this together so quickly! A lot of people have forgotten there were signs that this could happen along the way. Great job cutting them together here. Her turning mad was a bit rushed this season and felt somewhat out of character, but this was more than likely the ending GRRM always intended for her.
She never enjoyed killing Innocents, it was a last resort to her always so shes not like her father. The way they did it was terrible, her being mad was never her character. She's been betrayed and defiled before but never reacted like this.
mike LANG "Ser" is not a typo: the title for knights within the fictional universe of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series is spelled "S-e-r" with an "e", not as "sir" with an "i" as in real life. This is just a quirk of their culture. In A Feast for Crows, however, it is once misspelled as "Sir". You’re welcome :)
@Rozy Ella Most Targaryens are born of incest. Incestious babies are prone to have mental disorders, hence there's a ''50/50'' chance that they're either good/kind or mad. Viserys was mad for power, Aerys II was the Mad King, Rhaegar was a good man with a heart for the people. Dany always, from season 1, sat right between her two brothers when it comes to her mental state, but now the coin flipped to the mad side once and for good. Same thing for Cersei and Jamie's children. Cersei beat the odds 2 (Myrcella, Tommen) to 1 (Joffrey). Aerys and his wife/sister Rhaella clearly did not. Also Jon doesn't count in this because he wasn't born of (direct) incest.

" You Either Die A Hero, Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain"
That quote is well deserved here
Is that a Kelsier reference
She’s always my queen. So many people see her as the villain. But nobody sees everything she gave for her country. All of her friends. Two of her dragons. Her hand betrayed her. She did everything she could to circumvent violence. And in the end violence was her only choice. Every choice before that led to every loss she’d ever had. Her own brother betrayed her. Nobody could go through everything she did and not come out broken on the other side
So true, but in the end, when she saw that she won the final war and heard the bell, she had an option to just kill cersei or destroy the castle. But she killed innocents and destroyed the entire city. I still love her but when she heard the bell, if she had stopped there and waited for her army to conquer the city, she would have lived and ruled westeros, which is a happy ending for me :((((
Your right she’s not the villain she’s the tragic hero
"She did everything she could to circumvent violence."

She's not insane. She thinks she's doing what's right.
@@rop888 Not her character. You can't change your life philosophy in days.
Also Drogon doesn't kill Snow and the unsullied neither. hahaha
Season 8 is low-quality humor.
she wasn't mad being mad is being mentally insane and not knowing what you doing Daenerys knew what she was doing of they never killed misundae and her dragon she would not have burned down KL out of anger and depression
This is an example of a tribute to a character done competently. Thank You for this.
You made the fall of Daenerys believable.
@@Sickentist Confused writers? You do realize that nearly every single element in this episode was foreshadowed? The writers knew exactly what they did. The best argument all of those "critics" have to offer is that everything did not turn out to be how they would have liked it or expected it to be. That's the point of the last season: It is supposed to be provocative and unconventional.
@@Sickentist you know nothing kid
Sir Bariston Selmy, what a man!! He lay it all out a long ago!
I do think almost everyone knew she could go mad, and probably would (considering the ending of ADWD) but the way it was done, I can't with it.
Yeah good idea and this is the transformation I want for her character but DnD fucked up the pacing. 😂
She never enjoyed killing Innocents, it was a last resort to her always so shes not like her father. The way they did it was terrible, her being mad was never her character. She's been betrayed and defiled before but never reacted like this.
Bad writing by D&D smh
That's it I'm telling ser Jorah
"Sir"
mike LANG "Ser" is not a typo: the title for knights within the fictional universe of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series is spelled "S-e-r" with an "e", not as "sir" with an "i" as in real life. This is just a quirk of their culture. In A Feast for Crows, however, it is once misspelled as "Sir". You’re welcome :)

Has been thoroughly answered
@Rozy Ella You haven't seen the serie, have you?
@Rozy Ella In regards to Targaryen's, whether they're mad or not mad. (It's the incest thing)
Well now we know. Daddy would be proud
Also Jon doesn't count in this because he wasn't born of (direct) incest.

in2Rafi No, father. Burn them all, never. Just enough to send a message. She has done that. War. We try to feign its ruthlessness, yet embrace its outcome when we are the victor. If the USA had won the Vietnam War handily, while killing innocents in the process, the outcome would be a “Rah, Rah, we won, we won!” moment and the United States would have accepted that outcome (reluctantly, at first, but after settling in and seeing a shorter war and victorious ending) would have accepted US leadership in the end.

In Daenerys defence, she didn't want to do it. For some reason it broke her heart to do so. The face she makes when she's about to do it is heartbreaking. She knows that she has nothing left. The people of Westeros would always hate her and never support her regardless if she invaded Kings Landing or not, she lost her best friend and most trusted advisor, she lost the one man that loved her and she couldn't love back the way he wanted, she lost the man she loves who doesn't want to be with her, she lost the majority of her army who she swore to protect, she lost 2 of her children and now she knows that the throne she thought was hers by right, is no longer hers due to the laws of succession. Sadly, she lost everything.
