Different mods of installed module use. The M18x spec's around with the very high throttled performance (330 watts). The M14x is an i5 based CPU : 240 watts. Those M14x will try and give you in with the high-end spec's performance in the combination of saving energy. M14x is a scale down to the medium of those high's. (I'm a M18x owner.)
Mate, I've got the Mac Book Pro 15 inch 2.6 GHz with retina display, and I've just ordered this beast with maxed out configurations. Don't get me wrong, the Mac is great at light music/video editing on the go or just everyday use but it does not do hardcore gaming, first of all it's a big hassle to get Windows bought and installed, which is necessary for any semi-serious gamer, and it still doesn't have the oomph needed. They are both stunning computers but they have very different uses.
Both of them serves their own unique module hook up, for example: that the m17x has a built-in mini-sd flash card reader, the m18x doesn't. You would wanna look around for which of the 2 would fit you the most; other wise the both of them feels the same.
i dont think that u would complain about the m18x i have one myself its really good. im 14 years old and its the best gaming pc ive ever had. hoped this helped :)
Can it record games on ultra, like black ops with fraps or wegame at the highest settings. (Normal specs) Or do I have to upgrade RAM and CPU? I'm a pretty hardcore gaming, and I need the power and technology to play smoothly at high graphics with minimum to no lag at all, thanks for answering, awesome reviews! keep it up ;)
Hey man, the Alienware laptops are total beasts of machines, I would say that the alienware laptops are just mobile replacements for actual gaming Desktops. Considering the unmatched hardware inside it would also be a slightly heavy gaming laptop. These laptops can handle basically anyhting you want them to because they are pretty powerful. The next gen Alienwares have just been Released at 2013 E3, so if you want to, go check them out, id prefer one of these laptops over a PC anyway.
I was wondering, if you customize your intel and NVIDIA on the Dell website will it still come with 3d and Bluetooth capability? And did the dude on the vid customize his own or got the original platform?
so if you have a alienware, and playing games such a call of duty 4, what kind of fps would be average, would it be a dominant 250? or something around 100?, im thinking of getting one!

If you want maximum value for money you need to build your own. However it would be much easier to simply buy one of these. You could get an incredibly powerful PC with the best there possibly is out there for 2.5k if you build one. These however are definitely not nearly as powerful although they still can handle most things at very high settings
hi all I'm not a fanatic gamer but love to play a couple of game once in while.I need to change my computer hi is a grandpa now. He was build for game and was planning to do the some thing. My question is; would you think something like Alienware m18x would replace a "tower" pc?
and also, i will be using fraps (meaning big, files) should i get the 256gb ssd for running the games and an external harddrive for all the other files? BTW there is no option for a 256GB SSD AND a 1TB HDD!

@JaredThinks if you "need" this much power get a desktop otherwise the m17x is better and cheaper a single gtx580m can run anything at 1080p max quality the m17x is slightly smaller but much thinner and more portable the macro keys on the m18x are in the most annoying place(i have the razer blackwidow there in the same place) you can get a 120hz screen in the m17x which imo is much better 3d or not you can get 3d vision in the m17x (love 3d vision so much)
was about to buy one yesterday, but price ($6k with my specs) and size (its a freaking desktop with foldable display!) were two main reasons I didn't. Might as well get desktop for half the price with same specs.
This does not have 2 HDMI outputs. It has one HDMI 'input' and the other is 'output.' In other words, you can connect a PS3 and use your laptop screen as the monitor.

I originally got an Alienware M14x and I regret it so much. If you are going to spend the money on an Alienware, buy a good one. Go all out. I'm getting an Alienware Aurora Chassis ALX.

Fantastic laptop.... only thing I don't like is the touch pad being so off-center.... never did like that.
