    I know it is frowned upon in the jazz/classical guitar community, but I utilize the "thumb technique" such as Jimi Hendrix and John Mayer (and a lot of other blues/funk guitar players). Once you are able to use that thumb on the bass note, it makes it much easier to hit those extended chords. However, most people won't use that method because it feels really awkward in the beginning. It also makes it easy to mute certain strings (A-string in most cases) that don't necessarily need to be played for those extended chords.

      Oh absolutely, I’m definitely an advocate for thumbing these types of chords. That said, I’ve had some students that just don’t have the hand size for it. I think it’s good to practice both styles, if only to recognize what other players are performing.

    Thank you! This has helped me with a chord that's been bringing me to knees for weeks... and with only 20mins of practice!

    I'm from South Jersey but have lived overseas a long time. Great hearing that familiar SJ/PHL accent! Great tutorial. Seriously helpful!

      Thanks Castelo, the accent seems to confuse a lot of people haha, I’m often accused of being Canadian. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the lesson. Take care and enjoy your playing!

    I love the sounds of the uncommon chord progressions. After I spend a year or so getting totally comfortable with the mechanics and appropriate use, then I hope to be able to utilize in songs I use fingerstyle guitar on. That is going to be awesome. I am excited to start the journey. Thank you for the practicing lesson.

    Very Swifty indeed, TY! Step SIX, Bruthah: THAT'S the one we don't do, right? Been learning a handful of Sandra Sherman's (GORGEOUS) Chord Melody arrangements, and she, like so many peeps, primarily offers only the "mechanical" info on a chord (A string, fret 7 - D string, 5, etc...), but rarely if ever NAMES those notes as she's guiding us, which I totally get, as it becomes so cumbersome and info-dense. Notice how LONG step six took proportionally, yes? I've been playing geetar for 45 years, and finally decided to LEARN geetar, in the past five months. What a journey. And as much as ALL of us would like to NOT have to do it: we need to have ALL those notes front and center, immediately recallable, and to understand the chord structures from a theory standpoint, blah blah ... It's called the WORK, and wow is it powerful and eye-opening and long and "hard"... Hey, I'm ranting! Also: I didn't see any exploration of alternative fingerings, right? That's been powerful for me to include as I'm learning a tablature or following a specific step by step video: what works best for ME, and in this particular CONTEXT, as well? Sometimes a DIFFERENT fingering than I'm used to (or what's being taught) is easier to get into or out of for a progression. I saw that thumb-over comment earlier, par example. Another option here is to BAR that fifth fret, yes? Prolly even more conventional approach, but again, I'm just suggesting that maybe a Step 0.5 would be, like: Is THIS the best strategy for ME to play this chord in this CONTEXT. Anyhoooos: peace, love, gratitude, and sweet grooves, D.

    Man can you please do one for the B Chord. I know its a tough one but it will unlock so much more for me ! Love your video and i am going to practice that with some chirds for sure. I really enjoyed the mucle memory exercise. That's going to be very helpful. Thank you.

    Great lesson! I seem to need a step 7. Rest.
    Like, sleep on it for a night and come back the next day, maybe stack and un-stack the chord in my head a bit. It kinda sinks in more for me. If that makes any sense.

    I just got a guitar and book. I watched some videos and your channel was to my liking more than others. My question is. The book says strike downward when there is a bar above the note. What about when there is nothing above the note? Just whatever feels right? About to start a fire with the book and stick to the tube!

    This voicing implies a note right? Since it’s a 5 note chord, but we’re only using 4 strings. Nice lesson by the way

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the 5th is often omitted in these jazzy shapes, but is still a part of the harmony for a dom7+13: 1.3.5.b7.13

      swiftlessons thanks man, the a7add13 was easy for me right out of the box but I used this practice method on the basic f bar chord to smooth out changing to it and it helped! Can’t wait to do it every day on a bunch of hard chords, top rate!

    I have a problem with a simple Am/G as I have a really short little finger and when I bring it from open Am to add it to the G fret, my palm mutes all the strings. I despair.
