Thank you for watching! To sum it up, the discussions in regards to the creative decisions with Yasuke is a wholly different matter from the actual history that we can examine. To me, the gameplay/monetization in regards to Assassin's Creed: Shadows is more concerning than Yasuke. If you want more gaming content specifically, I do have a gaming channel you can subscribe to as well while this channel focuses more on history! www.youtube.com/@NefasQS | We also stream at twitch.tv/NefasQS

@@elitealice Don't you mean UbiLGBTQ+ after the recent announcement from Ubisoft? I personally have no issues with the LGBTQ+ community, but I don't want their ideals pushed onto me. I don't go around saying "Straight Pride" and pushing my ideals onto other people. I would like the choice and not have a game breaking emersion moments when my character suddenly flirts with another man (playing as a male character) as I do not usually play female character (if I have a choice). I also have an issue withs Yasuke as the main male character/protagonist. I don't care about Yasuke's history, he could be a gardener for Oda Nobunaga for all I care. I do not mind playing him as a standalone, side mission or telling the story of him in another game. But, this is the first game within the series out of all the Assassin's Creed games (13 of them I might add) in Feudal Japan where the male protagonist is not native to that setting of which I find it rather offensive and mis-representative for the Asian community. Not to mention, I can't even play as a male shinobi (ninja). I thought the whole premise of Assassin's Creed is about Assassins, ninja/shinobi are "Assassins", they use the art of stealth, deception, mis-direction and not mowing down people in heavy armour. And don't get me started with Naoe's male jawline, AI can't even detect if she's female. To add a nail to the coffin, the prices are (wands at the ready) "Ridiculous". Not to mention, add scarcity tactic by adding a pre-order special mission. I will rate this a "No pre-order out of 10".

The issue is Not that simple. Its a collection of many cultural Problems. Be IT the alianation of the "White" Main Charakter. Because every TV Show movie or Game Studios wants to be woke you will Always See a Female Protagonist or AS a Side Charakter but the Main Male Charakter is Always black or diverse. AS an example the new. Star wars movies and Rings of Power. And Then you Got that AC Main Charakters never where real Befor. And this Shows that they wanted a diverse Charakter so Bad they picked yasuke to make it Happen because Else they couldnt have explained it in 100 years. So its the First time that they Pick an Historical Charakter AS the Main Charakter. And its AS i belive the First time that they Main Charakter does Not have the erhnicity AS from the Region the Game is playing. AS for example bayek is eygiptian. Ezio is Italien. Altai is Arab. Nordsmen in valhalla. People would Like a stand alone yasuke Game 100 times more then an AC Game with a Female Protagonist and insteat of a japanese Male Protagonist a black men. Again me and many Others would have Loved a yasuke standalone Game Just AS many Liked the Anime and Had No Problem with it. But IT doesnt fit Assassin's Creed

      simple answer:
      - its not "diversity" or some vain "moral" principle, its done ideologlically to push what they think is "progressive" mentality - which aligns to ESG/DEI
      - main writer has connection to Sweet Baby Inc, ESG firm
      - goes hand in hand with Ubi being one of their "partners"
      - done to gaslight audience into emotional validation which leads to bias for Ubisoft to defend them
      - used as a shield to any issue the game will have
      - used to deflect from $130 price point and Ubi+ own nothing subscription
      - afro centrism in western media to artificially make everything about black or "done by blacks"
      - wasted opportunity for japanese male lead, only reason female lead is there is brownie points on "strong female protagonist trope" which they can still get brownie points for
      - he's not a samurai and never was, there's no evidence to it
anyone defending it is a dumbass, anyone saying the nay-sayers are racist is a dumbass and anyone pretending its "not a big deal" is one as well for not realizing social manipulation tactics and how obvious revisionist it is to do this and why media is shilling so hard for it right now (like IGN and WIki sites changing their post on Yasuke to align with it)

It's unfortunate, that there is no real history to draw upon which is why Ubisoft picked this character, when the game was being planned, Yasuke was all the rage in the west, and people thought it was neat. Unfortunately, for a game where the creators say they pride themselves on this being historically accurate, it's anything but. Yasuke was in Japan for less than 2 years, that first year as a Jesuit slave, the remainder of the second year as a gift to Oda, most of the history of Yasuke is kinda of fantasy as there are no real detailed records, Lockley the guy who said he did research on the book was literally trying to push a book.
Seriously, they could've picked a random japanese dude and avoided all of the controversy, and it sounded like in the original story draft it was about a monk, which would've been cool, but here we are. The funniest part is no one even knows what his name is, where he was born or how old he actually is, dude could've been a dark skinned guy from India for all we know, but nope he's the fantasy of 6'4" 235lb running back who plays for in the NFL. it's all kinda silly.

But Ubisoft is not. It's obvious that the SELLING POINT of the game is that he's black. Sorry. And they knew what they were doing making his counterpart an Asian woman instead of a man. Weve got a ghost of Tsushima at home looking ahh. Plus the mechanics of ac has transgressed far beyond its peak (ac unity) so most people are expecting what they've poured money into over the years which is rpg type. But yeah the glorification of blacks agendas is being pushed hard by white game developers w probably Asian gf projecting their collective unconsciousness. It's goofy as hell they are also late as hell. This is coming from a dark colored entity.
I like yasuke and it meant a lot to me to see how the japanese elite accepted and saw different beings from a across the world capable of fitting in their class and society. I just don't like how him being black is the SELLING POINT. Reminds me of some drake shit.
Edit, this would have competed with ghost if they made it miyamoto and yasuke despite the probable time difference. This just seems like they wanted to call dibs on yasuke which EVERYONE WANTS TO DO and we will probably see more yasuke related stuff in shows movies and games in the pronto future. A genuine question. Nioh came out a few years ago featuring a white samurai and no one cared. I wonder why that was? Yaskue may or may not have been made a Samurai, but he WAS given weapons and Armor, servants and a home. For all intents and purposes, he might as well have been one.

I'll say this as someone who's effectively not a fan of the series, but i think your misunderstanding something on this about why the yasuke situation is such a problem.
First off it's because he's a named historical figure who we know quite alot about as the protagonist (and likely, not a samurai or ninja, evidence points to him essentially being the equivalent to a flag bearer or butler), this is extremely problematic for the fanbase because it is obviously done for DEI purposes and gaming is a escapist hobby for most people, meaning they don't play games to be preached to about anything, hence why the backlash is so extreme, plus the fact it's the one assassin's creed game fans have been begging for for years, meaning ubisoft took their wishes and spat on them in the eyes of the fans, if the female kunoichi was the only playable character in the game, it probably wouldn't have had as much of a backlash, this is specifically because it's obviously pandering for dei points and will effect the story as well.
Now on to nioh, first problem is nioh was a original game, william adams was a real person as well who became a advisor and samurai under ieyasu tokugawa but again this is a new franchise so there was no baggage against it (to be honest, nearly everyone in nioh is a historical person fyi, including the bosses, even the love interest's name is not historical, she seems to be based on william adams first wife along with a couple of sprinklings of other historically significant female characters of the period), second the japanese themselves did this one making it national choice, had assassin's creed shadows been made by a japanese team and put yasuke in it the furvor would likely not be as strong, third there were far more white people in japan during the warring states period than there were black people, i won't go into details about all of the seedy stuff that happened in japan during the warring states period but the idea of seeing a white male in japan in the late 1500's to early 1600's is not unheard of.

Also, how exactly do we know a lot about him? He's mentioned in a few texts, explicitly stated he was granted a sword, servants and a home... and then that's it. He disappears from the historical record meaning he fits as a protagonist perfectly. They can do whatever they want with him because after his service to Nobunaga ended, he dropped out of the historical record entirely. Also, when Nobunaga died he pretty much went on a warpath due to it. He was clearly not just a "baggage handler or servant". Come on man. We both know why you're really upset. The fact you directly stated that him being in the game is just an attempt at DEI directly tells on yourself.

First off i never told you where i stood on the argument or either series, i've never played a single assassin's creed game or nioh nor do i want to, only the reason for the argument and again, nioh was made by the japanese which gives it far more leeway than a western developed game when it comes to this, you also completely overlooked my main points for your pollical desire, assassin's creed has never used a historical figure as a playable character in the series, breaking with conventions, while it would have been obvious dei pandering if they had made the character black, it would have had less of a backlash on that alone, though the backlash is mainly, that they aren't using ethnically from the population that the game is based on, which is VERY important when your playing as a assassin, you know, someone who doesn't want to stand out, notice how no one is getting angry over the female protagonist, because she wouldn't stand out unlike yasuke which you could easily pick out of a crowd in the game.
If i had my way i wouldn't have even made the game in the first place, japan is overdone but if your going to make it about ancient japan at least make it authentic, what i want to see is a AC game based in the songhai dynasty (west african, one of the least known empires in the world, would be interesting to see a game on it) or possibly the aztecs, i'm tired of hearing about AC honestly, i want a game from it that is actually innovative instead of copying every single other series pattern of using famous time no x, if i saw something actually innovative i'd give it a shot.
Oh and you forgot something with your obvious trying to make this racial bias argument, no one has problems with either afro samurai or onimusha 3 as examples, because neither tried to push a political agenda, again for the last time, the problem with this is they used yasuke, for the first time in the history of the series they used a actual historical figure, my own take is that making him a assassin is insane, a warrior sure but if he's actually a assassin in the game it's utterly mind boggling because he sticks out, has obvious identifiying features and can be watched for as soon as he's known as a assassin, the first rule of a assassin is to not stand out, but that's irrelivant, said it before i don't care about the game in general.

First of your mother fucking RACIST to assume the "white people" are the only once that are made, a bunch of us Asian (not just the japanese) are also unhappy
There have already been a bunch of black protagonists in AC adawale, that girl from ac 3 and bayek ( the father of the brotherhood)
It's not fair for the first ever male Asian protagonist in a mainline game( Because there was one in the Indian chronicle) to be shafted like that. Not to mention if anyone has the right to share "samurai culture" it would be the japanese themselve.
Mind you unlike With nioh and a bunch of japanese products with yosuke foreign products are more critically looked upon when dealing with their culture.
That is why the ghost of Tsushima was highly praised . it was a game being developed by sucker punch that was based on the USA based on their culture. It wouldn't be as much as a success in Japan if say they made the mc white because it wouldn't have properly shown their culture
AC also has to deal with it. It didn't help that Ac for all it's gimmicks have actively shown culture from people of that culture, Connor for example will be game ended if you hunted to much animals, Edward was a pirate who was originally from the British navy as a hired pirate, heck even in most Rpg like games in AC they show Egyptian culture with someone who is from Egypt, they show Greek from a Greeks perspective and even a viking perspective from someone who was a viking.
People would naturally assume they choose to represent samurai culture a Japanese culture with a Japanese man.
Yosuke himself also doesn't represent the japanese he was made mc to represent an entirely different group of people even do the game is focus on Japan and it's culture.
Chosing yosuke as the mc was a horrible idea, it not only robbed the ability for the Japanese to represent their own culture. Like the Bushido code(which yosuke in game broke by betraying nobunaga) the most important thing to a samurai. all the while branding him as a samurai when clearly should have bean a ronin in the game.
He could have been a side character (maybe mentor or dlc character)

the question is not whether he never existed but whether he was a samurai or not, because the evidence is so vague and unlike the mentioned Hideyoshi, he wasn't even in Japan for a long time, and especially not in Nobunaga's service. His lord was dead maybe 20 months after Yasuke entered his service. The safest thing to say in my mind is that Yasuke was his bodyguard and sword bearer, but even if he was made a samurai, he still would not have thought in battle like one because you cannot be trained this fast. And I agree there are more problems with this game than just that, even the inclusion of Naoe which follows the common western trope of preferring east asian women over east asian men. And if rumors are true, this was not supposed to be the original concept for the game. The original one featured three historical shinobi as the protagonists and they were all men. Which probably would have been the better idea. I think the game will still make money because of the brand recognition but it would have sold much better if they had stuck with the original concept. Or just do a game set e.g. in the Mali empire if they wanted another black "assassin".

White people actually interacted with Japan through trade, diplomacy and warfare in ways that Black people didn't. I don't understand what the issue is. The obsession with Yasuke clearly comes down to trying to shoehorn a novelty into Japanese history in order to portray him as having some outsized impact on that history for modern audiences; and to placate the inferiority complex of black Americans due to the relative insignificant impact Sub-Saharans have had on world history overall. That's why you get so many white savior types (and the Uncle Chan in this video) trying to champion them. That's why there's so many false equivalencies and attempts to equalize everything--such as the case as with your comment.
You get one black guy that was a retainer for a feudal lord and people eat it all up, that's how starved people are for representation. We have no documents at all except that book from a foreign dude with lots filling in the blanks with speculation. The issue is that Ubisoft advertises the game by emphasizing “historical accuracy”. Though they retracted that by saying it’s mere fiction, you know that won’t cut it right? For us Japanese in regards to this game, we’ve been shoved a false history and was falsely advertised as OUR history. Finally when they got a back lash from people who know even a little bit of Japanese history, they retract that statement. Like no, they can’t end it at that. Oh and also the developer’s statement being like “Oh we couldn’t empathize with a Japanese character so we had to get “our own samurai”. Like wtf? Imagine a game dev saying we had to have a white character since we couldn’t empathize with a black character. They’d get cancelled to the ground. One of the reasons for the controversy is the definition of "samurai" is ambiguous. Originally it referred to lower-ranking nobles who made their living by the martial arts to serve higher-ranking nobles, but during the Warring States period, when the status system was ambiguous, it came to refer to a relatively higher-ranking combatant with the right qualification for mounted combat, and during the Edo period it again became a hereditary status.
Considering that Yasuke's surname is not documented, it is unlikely that he held such a high status, and given that he wasn't killed by Akechi Mitsuhide after Oda Nobunaga's death and was sent to Nanbanji Temple, it is likely that he did not participate in the battle that much.
However, the definition of "samurai" in English is even more ambiguous, and could be anyone who worked in a combat position in medieval Japan. In Japanese, "bushi" is close to this definition.

The evidence actually leans more into no he wasn’t a samurai. He didn’t have 2 swords or a clan name which was something shared between all samurai all the way up to the end of their era. As for the retainer aspect it’s going over people heads what that actually is in terms of Japan then. Retainer in that period would have been something like the speaker of the house when the lord was away. That doesn’t mean he was automatically samurai. When it’s addressed on what a retainer is in history it’s stated a samurai COULD be a retainer but generally it was someone very close to the lord. The other thing is again the name. Samurai had 2 distinct identifiers that only people of their specific status had so that if us normies could know who they were and who they were with and their status.
Samurai after earning the title had 2 names. A nickname a true family( a clan roots) name and a lineage name. It’s like a pimp named slit back…. Not even joking you gotta say the whole thing lmao. Also despite what people say only samurai were allowed to carry 2 swords. People say that’s not true but it is. What’s not true is the style of swords they carried. Wasn’t always a long and short sword. All these things yasuke lacked along with time to be samurai. And it’s wild how romantic people make samurai. Samurai were asshole murdering fuck heads and people wanna shoehorn him down to that status.

You seem to have an inaccurate understanding of what a Samurai was. First they were not monolithic through time, including what weapons signified them. Different types and lengths of swords were used by samurai over their long history. Two swords for example, didn't become the symbol of samurai until over decades after Yasuke's death, during the Edo period. You also have an inaccurate understanding of what a retainer was. The type of retainer he was, with property, a stipend, a sword with his master's crest and bodyguard duties, would be a samurai, and not anything else. Had you paid attention to the video, you would have been provided with ample evidence for why he clearly was a samurai. Your issue is that you can't conceive of a black samurai. It just doesn't sit right with your understanding of the world. That is a you problem.

    • @GodSmit
      @GodSmit 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Interesting. In this video he talks about how the cultural circumstances for which someone is declared samurai is evolutionary over the era. Being that this period in time there was a lot of conflict and war, the circumstances for becoming a samurai must've been much more lenient as a result. Much like women taking on jobs while the men are at war (in the U.S during world war) because the times gave them little option, and much necessity for it.

@@barnettmcgowan8978 I don’t have a bad understanding of the history of my people. He wasn’t actually called retainer he was called bushi. Bushi can be described as a retainer. All samurai were bushi but not all bushi were samurai. There were 2 words specifically used for samurai which were Buke and saburai. The word samurai was coined much later after Yasukes time in Japan. As for the swords yes samurai had different swords up until 1601 when the it became common for samurai to carry a long and short sword however anyone from that time literally did carry a short sword.
Also no one knows when or where he died. Shit they don’t even know if he was from Africa. You can read everything anyone knows in literally 2-3 mins flat. Nothing at all says he was anything more than bushi. Idk where you’re getting this he had a crest on his sword and stuff. Gonna assume you read Thomas lockleys made up shit. It was a single short sword a stipend and a home with servants. Nothing more. Same shit was given to Anjin miura

@@OmniPotentS001 Don't you just love how Barnett is incapable of debating an opposing viewpoint without making baseless accusations of you being racist? Lol.
Ample evidence of Yasuke being a samurai. Good lord. The delusions of some people. Citing a Thomas Lockley novel when Lockley himself openly admits to speculating the vast majority of his book is the peak of ignorance.
0 concrete evidence exists that confirms he was definitely considered a samurai. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Anyone who claims this proof exists is lying.
There is evidence to suggest he *could've* been Samurai. A lot of the people against this Yasuke business try to downplay Yasuke into being little no than a servant Japanese people laughed at. If Nobunaga made him bushi, for whatever reason, Yasuke was in fact not just some laughing stock slave/clown like some are claiming. He was clearly somebody of some significance.
I honestly find it embarrassing that people need to explain why people would expect AC: Shadows to have the main male protagonist be Japanese.
I've noticed the vast majority of the people whining about those who take issue with this Yasuke business are either being intellectually dishonest or are just genuinely ignorant/uninformed. None of them take into account Ubisoft's very overt DEI/representation agenda that they publicly proudly admit to. Or do these oafs just forget that nearly every major character in Far Cry 6 was a woman?
The gaming industry in general, has seen a pendulum shift in this DEI business, especially with making more main characters Black and or women, for no reason other than to score real world ESG brownie points. A lot of people aren't fans of this new trend. Given this trend, Ubisoft's history of following this trend, and people have very valid reasons for being concerned about Ubisoft making Yasuke the main male lead.
One point I notice a lot of people failing to address is that Ubisoft doing this goes against their own beliefs in representation. Why is Ubisoft refusing to "represent" Asian men by giving this game a main male protagonist that is Japanese? What did Asian men do to Ubisoft? They made sure to give Fujibayashi Nagato a daughter, even though I'm pretty sure his recorded family history is sketchy, why not give him a playable son?
These people are looking at this from the most surface-level view possible, and coming to a definitive conclusion, with that conclusion mostly being baseless accusations of racism. I can see why there's a saying that the average person is an idiot.
At the end of the day, Yasuke being samurai or not is moot for me. It's a cool thing to think about, and the idea does have potential. He was around in this time period, and could easily slot into this game.
Japan has used him numerous times in games, anime and manga (This is not a 1:1 comparison some are falsely claiming it is, as Japan, unlike Ubisoft and Western developers, isn't consumed by DEI nonsense. It's like trying to compare Afro Samurai to this). They handle him better. And they didn't try to revise history of Yasuke when they did. The West has done so when Netflix made an animated show about him, and they're doing so now. This is not the same thing. Quite clearly.

I mean no one vilifies white men for no reason. And this should go without saying but just be clear, NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE RACISTS. But there is a very clear history of a violent and racist hierarchy in the west that is upheld by and for white people. Going further within that hierarchy white woman are still second to white men. To say Yasuke is only in the game because he's black and therefore a white guy can't be in the game is insane. It implies that it would more natural for a white man to be in that setting. The West has a hard time seeing black history as anything more than slavery and rap music. It's also super disingenuous to act they like care about historical or cultural representation like they didn't have white folks playing Egyptians or Tom Cruise playing a samurai or Nioh for that matter. We bare knuckle box a pope, fight in tanks and use blood to time travel. But a black man with a katana is where we draw the line👌okay chief

Also, Tom Cruise's character wasn't a Samurai you bozo. He wasn't the 'last samurai'. And his character still would have had a much greater impact than a marooned slave that lived as a lord's servant for 3 years. The imagery of Kan Watanabe's character having a dream of a white tiger to foreshadow the coming of some white man to Japan to train rebel Shogunate forces in the ways of modern warfare is cringe as shit though, I can't lie.

I don't really have a problem with Yasuke. Imagine finding out Jack the Ripper was made an assassin in the AC universe. AC fans are a little over the top and these anti-woke people will eat up what some have to say and paint this false narrative that Ubisoft is being woke. Would a male Japanese man be better? Probably would be more accurate and would be more creative options with his background of his story, but we don't know much about Yasuke. His story could be great and so could Naoe. I think fans are also getting way too upset about Naoe. Yeah, I'm a male and I won't have an option to play a Japanese male in this game, but other games already have that type of protagonist. Ubisoft is doing something different and all the trailer showed was an interpretation on his myth that looked like an absolute unit.

simple answer: its not a small thing nor some irrelevant thing decided, there's a bigger reason it happened

I mean technically a Japanese male character would have drastically widen the timeline rather than just the late 16th century.
17th century Japan would have been insane given it was around the time the entire country closed itself off from the world.
