This was so helpful in a way I wasn't expecting! I loved the talk about brushes, especially the expense of them. What you said makes sense and has been what I thought. More expensive brushes require more care than I like. I tend to not use very expensive anything because too afraid of ruining whatever the object is, instead of being able to enjoy it. This is true even if the object was a gift.
My art teachers have always tried to push the expensive brushes. I'm happy to hear they aren't so necessary.
I also liked hearing brushstrokes are like handwriting. Unique to each person.
I often add ink to my watercolors to get those twirly lines. I'm happy to see how I can do that with paint.
    Thank you for these videos!!

Angela Fehr That's another place I always seemed to clash with the art teachers I've had. I like the simplicity of using only one brush. I get overwhelmed with too many choices, yet class materials lists always had at least five brushes as needed! I gave up altogether about a year ago and gave away all my art supplies in frustration. Felt I'd never be an artist of any description. I'm trying again and your videos are helping so much. I can see a real difference in my watercoloring. It is fun...for the first time! Thank you!!!

    Thank you, Angela.
As always, great painting and demo.
As a relative beginner in watercolor, we tend to be 'spongy' , that is, we read, watch and absorb whatever else is informational about watercolor. This leads to much confusion and doubt about our choices in brushes, mediums or styles, etc. One artist says you need this brush, that paper, these colors and you MUST have this type of whatever item is in vogue right now.
And sadly, we get caught up in the hype, and become collectors of brushes/ pigments/ papers and all manner of assorted items we find we rarely use anyway.
I, for one, value your advice and unbiased opinions on artist tools and equipment. You have never recommended anything you have not either demonstrated or personally used.
Thanks so much for clearing up so many questions and for your presentations on you-tube. I eagerly await each one.

You are a master at visualizing you painting, and create such beautiful work! It is amazing to me what you can do with a brush, and some paint. I hope someday to be able to feel my painting as it progresses like you do. I did order a book on Chinese brush strokes from Amazon. I hope it helps me ! Thank you for a very insightful, and enjoyable lesson!

This was wonderful. Exactly what I needed to see today. I am enrolled in your current Craftsy course and learning a lot from it. Can't wait for part 2. But I struggle with anxiety when it comes to painting with watercolor. When I'm able to put that aside, I love to paint in the loose abstract form you use. Part of that is using beautiful granulating colors. I see that you use Daniel Smith most often. Would you mind doing a demo or giving us a list of the granulating and Primatek colors you find most useful? I want to place an online order but I'm not sure which to get. I'm ordering the 6 sampler set in Primatek and adding Moonglow, and Green Apatite, which others do you feel are unique to D.S. and that you would recommend as palette builders? Thanks for everything, Angela. I find your insights and pep talks very supportive. One day I'd like to come to Dawson and take a workshop.

ANGELA...LOVE THAT YOU TALK WHILE YOU ARE PAINTING, AND DON'T DUB IN YOUR COMMENTS AFTERWARD...MUCH MORE SPONTANEOUS AND OF-THE-MOMENT TRAIN OF THOUGHT. AS ALWAYS, I LEARN SO MANY CREATIVE "TIDBITS" FROM YOU...THANKS! BTW, WHERE DO YOU GET THE PALETTES THAT YOU USED IN THIS VIDEO?

As much as I love your work in this video I'm afraid I was a bit disappointed in your brush review. I think I was expecting a side by side comparison of painting the same object with say a round vs a dagger or synthetic vs sable. If I was going to add a brush to my collection I'd kind of like to see how different the results could be from what I am used to.
Your Wings & Petals series is truly an exercise in imagination and interpretation. Bravo.

I noticed that you dip your brushes in the dirty water frequently before going into a new color. Is this a strategic decision? Perhaps you have addressed this kn a video I haven't seen yet. I love ykur style and videos which I recently discovered as I renew my love of watercolor

Thank you so much for doing this Rosemary brush review as there are currently not many video reviews of their extensive range. I have been using her Kolinsky and Squirrel brushes for several years with great joy, but as a typical poor broke artist I can rarely afford anything larger than a size 8. I have been keen to find a review of their sable/synthetic blend brushes. As with so many of us I am also becoming increasingly aware and challenged by the ethical issues of using sable and so I would like to move away from them if possible. " Now for my rant"... it really annoys me how easy it is for you in the US to order art materials from the UK but your wonderful discounting art stores refuse to ship to us. Even using Ebay or Amazon, the shipping costs are enormous - irony really as most of Asia will ship for free. "So much for that special bond of friendship they keep telling us about" ...Sorry - I just had to get that one out, it really gnaws at me.

    • @FannaTurano
      @FannaTurano 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Peter, as a US citizen I must say that as individuals, we have ZERO input regarding brush prices or shipping fees from US stores.. Have you tried our favored "Meininger's Art Store" and "Guiry's" for your brush needs? I find Hobby Lobby and Michael's for supplies are not cheap--anywhere, so if "those of us in the US" purchase materials from the UK, you can bet it's at a higher cost to cover shipping. The charges will be trickled down to us in some way or fashion. I wouldn't even attempt EBay or Amazon. Birgit O'Connor.com also sells brushes for fair prices. No sable, just blends. I've given you 3 avenues to travel in your brush search. Good luck.
