That's pretty cool! He knows exactly where his ejectors at & the sweet spot of catching his casing. He always hesitates after unlocking breach RE positions his hand to pull back the bolt with the back his thumb of his hand with his palm prepared to catch it as it pops right into his fingers. I'm sure I can do this technique as well. Looks Damned Cool while missing my target's.

I trained and qualified on the L42 back in 1977. We trained back to around 5-600m IIRC beyond that it was harassing fire. Very accurate out to 3-400m using the modified Hawkins position at the longer ranges. Brilliant course, difficult to pass, a real test of soldiering skills.

Just came across this, interesting , I was in the British Army service rifle team that went to Connaught ranges, Ontario Canada to compete at ex sharpshooter and we took the L96A1 with us which caused a massive fallout , serious the Canadians hadn't even seen or heard of it, and we had to get the MOD to confirm that it was the new British Army sniper rifle , so we could compete in the sniper match , having personally owned an Anschutz 1413 super match .22 rifle , the new sniper rifle took no time in getting used to and a massive difference compared to the old one , we were actually on a bit of a arms sales pitch at the time also giving the other international forces a look at the new rifle , as you know the Canadians did buy British , but went for the cheaper option being the Parker Hale .

I remember being taught the marksmanship principles 40 years ago as a recruit on the SLR in the 'Rifle Depot' Winchester like it was yesterday - some things you just dont forget.... position and hold has to be firm enough to support the weapon, weapon must point naturally at the target without any undue physical effort, sight alignment must be correct. shot must be released and carried through without disturbing the position - the L96 came in after my time but I have fond memories of the L42

    • @KirstyTube
      @KirstyTube 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It's basic military training in the British Army, check bolt, body, chamber,, twice and then fire off the action while pointing safe.
Showing clear is when you are requested to hand over your weapon. You remove the magazine bring the moving parts to the rear and hold them them there, check yourself that there are no rounds present and get the recipient to confirm. Only then do you hand them the weapon. Just imagine some general shooting you in the foot by accident :0

Was good to watch, my dad was deployed to Falklands with the L96 but also trained with the 303 too. The difference in sound with the L96 and the new version too, even compared to the sound of my 308 is just so different and yet the same cartridge. Awesome bit of history 👏

That action on the L96 was as smooth as silk. totally predictable. No hanging up like the newer action AX with no miles on. She's worn in like a pair of your favourite jeans. Absolutely awesome to see Frank cuddle it like his favourite Aunty.
But it still doesnt match seeing Frank on Future Weapons with the AS50 and Mack shooting API. That rifle puts the British way into sending 50 BMG towards the target. Semi-Auto with Bolt-Action accuracy. To be honest Accuracy International really knows how to make the right tool for the job whenever called upon. They're quite the company from what i can find out as an armchair historian. I'd dearly love to visit the factory one day. that would be bucket list stuff for me.
Cant believe this only just came up on my recommended list! Liked and Subscribed.

I am delighted that you have such feelings for the L96. I mean I get it, I have several rifles, but I have one that I bought used, restored it, and it is like a match made in heaven. The setup of that rifle just fits me so well (my discipline is off hand shooting). It does so much of the hard work for me because it fits so well. It was a cheap cast off for someone else, but for me, I like it much better than all of my more expensive rifles. I am not a super marks man, the little girl down the street can beat me at bench shooting, but off hand, well, that rifle picks me up to another level. Old rifles can be useful, I did spend the money on the optics, and have learned that light regulating optics is what I need to prevent eye fatigue. Spend a bit on good optics!

As a Sri Lankan and a gun lover...I'd say the AI AW is one of the best out there...Back in the war against the LTTE terrorists one of our snipers code named "Niro" attached to Gajaba regiment (infantry) used this rifle which is the standard issue for Sri lanka Army snipers...he had 217 confirmed kills to his name...and another infantry soldier code named "Tarzan" attached to the Sinha regiment (infantry) was able to confirm the longest sniper kill by a Sri Lankan soldier which was 1200 m !

Great video Frank. As a former soldier of your era and now a keen long range shooter, I appreciate the effort and the content. Steve Hawkins has put out a ltd edition book on the british army sniper history which really goes to town on every model from ww1 through to and including our favourite, the L96A1. ..well worth a read if you can get a copy. I have a pm2 5-25mounted as my scope of choice on my 6.5CM...it was bought from your good selves. There may be slighty better optics these days but the PM2 is easy to use and dial, robust as old boots and reliable as grandma. Have nothing but praise for O/W cystomer service btw. Big thumbs up from me🖒

But then the M39, despite being a captured soviet M91/30 refitted by the Finns has a heavy barrel and pillar bedding, excellent stocking of the action............the No4T is a piece of junk by comparison. I was taught it was for sound control. Try dropping an empty brass rifle casing and bouncing off a stone. What are bells made of? Brass, because it gives off a nice ring. If you had a buddy standing 100m away in the quiet countryside, he'd hear that brass ding off that stone or worse a bigger rock. Rifles like the Rem700 with spring loaded plungers in the bolt face will fling a piece of brass 3m+ if you don't use one of your hands to control it from flying out. You can use the bolt hand or reach over the scope with the other hand as the bolt hand slides the bolt back. Imagine laying very still in a hide, shooting BANG everyone within earshot now has eyes facing where the sound came from, and a half second after the BANG a bad guy close enough hears "DING". Tiny sounds carry far and non-natural sounds carry farther especially in the quiet, still air of mornings and evenings.

Ben McCann I always aim my writing at kids that are gamers and never fired a real gun. Nor had any military or police range and field training. I did the police course and it was tough enough but the military guys have my admiration and respect. They are true heroes and never recognized.

I'd love to see the groupings from each weapon. Interesting to see not much difference in recoil. Perhaps the Lee Enfield had a touch more? Changing to night scope..would that not alter the zeroing at all? That would have to be machined very accurately.

We will definitely be showing the targets next time! This was intended more as an introduction to the guns themselves with the shooting being a bit of an after thought. But rest assured, targets cams are on the way! Thanks for watching.

Great admiration for anyone who wore the uniform, not only do they put their lives at risk, also their physical and mental health too.
I just cannot imagine the level of skill and concentration of hitting targets accurately at over a mile away, the hours, days and years spent on the range honing your skills I find to be truly awe inspiring.

The AXMC its almost an engineering tool for milling steel. Its so stable the only thing that spoils it is the shooter. 338 lapua round this is the finger of God. With a sand sock or bean bag the bipod can be removed in rugged landscape. With KN203 scope its unstoppable 24 hours a day.

Secondo te ne vale la pena?

Beautiful no4. I have one not nearly as nice but still in pretty good shape that I’m in the process of mounting a scope (a no 32 seems to be a bit out of reach) and a cheek rest to it. I was curious if you have any recommendations for something that has a close look to it or would it be outrageous to use an era correct Russian or German made ones as those seem a bit easier to get a hold of. Ideally I’d be thrilled to find a reproduction or a surplus but they seem to fetch a premium and hard to find in my area. I’m new to some of this (prior service but over 20 years since I was in) but I’m still want to shoot it so I’m looking not just at aesthetics but functionality.

The L96 seems to make more satisfying noises than the newer one. The sound it makes when he pulls up the bolt lever and then when the casing shoots out, it sounds very precise in a weird way. It's probably that resin cover vibrating with a dull noise whereas the new one is the standard plastics and exposed metal.
