    I honestly don't understand parents who do not fully learn sign language when they get a deaf/hoh child.
    It causes a lot of grief for the child, and a lot of isolation and frustration for them when they grow up to not be able to properly communicate with their parents.

      Where do parents go to learn to sign. Are there courses. I have got the nzsl app its brilliant. One of my grandsons born with severe hearing loss, hes six months wears his hearing aides & will have cochlear implants when hes older. I was shocked bcoz hes the first one in our family. I want to learn to sign & his mother says he will also learn to sign regardless of the implants. Thanks for sharing ur videos its helped me to understand the deaf community.

      I wanted to learn to sign DESPERATELY but my hoh son refused. He won't identify as deaf. I keep telling him his world would be bigger if he could speak that language as well. Very sad.

    we had a deaf student in our class in the 1st grade (who is now my best friend- and has been for 15 years) we went to the same school together from 1-12. Throughout middle school and elementary our teachers and students put in time before homeroom to learn sign language so that we could better communicate with him- we thought it was the least we can do to exert common decency along with installing flashing lights and other deaf-friendly things around school. By the time we had finished 4th grade the majority of us were strongly proficient in ASL. In high school, our entire class would share notes with each other via shared document on google drive and not only did it help us to learn better through collaboration but also my best friend wouldn't have to worry about taking pictures of the notes in class like Dean seems to have. It struck me as a bit weird idk.

    Total Communication is the best because allow Deaf individuals to communicate in a way that more people would use. It still is NOT English. But it is necessary to understand that they will learn the language (whatever the other language is) as a second language. He will learn English as a German, Mexican, Japanese person learn. Dean can use a note taker as one of his accommodations (I am surprised they didn't give it to him). He is the living proof that a Deaf individual CAN DO everything that a hearing person can except hear (with their ears).

    This is probably a weird question but how do deaf learn to read, if they can't hear the words being said out loud to know how they're supposed to sound?

    • @MissLilRedRooster
      @MissLilRedRooster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Reading is a cognitive function that doesn't have to connect to a verbal expression. Deaf people have no need to say the words, so they can just take the visual input and connect it to a definition or context. There isn't any need for them to know how to say it since they never will.

  • @kirstycollins4237
    @kirstycollins4237 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a fantastic story and person Dean!
    I went deaf 5 years ago and totally identify with the isolation. It's hard when you can't get your family to learn to sign.
    I have a son with Autism and ADD and despite his high IQ it takes him forever to do homework. So he is basically studying nearly every hour of the week and weekend. People have no idea how hard it is. The HSC is not designed to work for people with disabilities. It is almost impossible to get allowances without taking the Education Department to court. Everything is stacked up against them. I hope more disabled people get into government and make school and education fairer for young people because it should be a fair and level playing field.

    What we do here in the states is we use recorders to record teachers, etc. So we can go back and play it to our interpreter and then they can sign what's being said. That way they can pause while we take notes. Maybe this method could help someone who is watching this. ❤

    I can relate. I was borne hearing, became hard of hearing, and had to have an interpreter in college, before, cus of being hard of hearing in a college where the instructors would refuse to speak up, speak more clearly, or write it down each word they said. Fortunately, most instructors at my current college do speak up so that I can hear them better. I learned ASL for my son who was borne Deaf, but I also learned SEE (Signed Exact English) which is TC because I had started losing my hearing only after I had gained verbal speech because I was already used to the sentence structure of the written and spoken forms of English.

    First thing I noticed, why isn't this captioned for the hearing impaired? What the heck!? Dean is a smart young man, who do very well at whatever he does because he wants to find solutions for problems

    Dean you’re amazing and you look great. A lovely young man. I am learning AUSLAN and think its so important. It’s a shame that your family doesn’t learn more sign language. You will have an amazing life.

    It's like that with a lot of children, they all struggle but I think it's time that they have a class with a deaf professor teaching deaf student instead of putting them in hearing classes to give them more of an advantage in life.

    I could only understand Dean. It would have been better for this to have captions or subtitles I come from a deaf family, and I understand about the problems with certain interpreters.

      Excellent point. Captions should be on all videos now.

    The American equivalent of TC is PSE or pigeon scratch English. I’m learning PSE at the moment because I haven’t gotten to an American Sign Language class yet to learn ASL grammar and since PSE is basically English but in sign it’s easier to learn. Keep going Dean!
