- Third battle of Panipat was between Marathas and Ahmad Shah Abdali. This was the most fierce war in history. Marathas lost this battle and could not sustain maratha empire in India. There were many reasons why maratha lost 3rd battle of panipat. Some of them were lack of support, carrying whole families, shortage of food.
I have listed top 10 reasons here. Marathas lost panipat battle to Ahmad Shah Durrani who was the ruler of Afganistan. He made Durrani Empire in 1747 and attacked on India many times. This fight was fought on 14th January 1761 on the ground of Panipat.
SadaShiv Rao Bhau was the commandar of Maratha army while Abdali was leading his army from other side. Abdali attacked with a force of more than 1 lac soldiers as shown in Panipat trailer. After panipat war maratha's were very weak, so in upcoming years other forces pushed them back and finally Britishers ruled over India. In maratha history this day was the worst day for every people in Maharashtra.

पानीपत का तीसरा युद्ध अहमद शाह अब्दाली और मराठों के बीच लड़ा गया था | ये युद्ध इतिहास में 18 वीं शताब्दी के भयंकर युद्धों में गिना जाता है | पानीपत की लड़ाई में मराठाओं की बहुत बुरी हार हुई थी जिसके बाद मराठा साम्राज्य की नींव कमजोर हो गयी थी | अहमद शाह अब्दाली अपने साथ एक लाख की फ़ौज लेकर आया था |
वो पहले ही पंजाब के बहुत से हिस्सों पर अपना अधिकार स्थापित कर चूका था | अब्दाली ने अफ़ग़ानिस्तान में 1747 में दुर्रानी साम्राज्य की स्थापना की थी | पानीपत का युद्ध 14 जनवरी 1761 को पानीपत के मैदान में लड़ा गया था | लड़ाई का मैदान दिल्ली के पास ही उत्तर में 95.5 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर था |
अहमद शाह दुर्रानी का साथ भारत में बहुत से शासकों ने दिया था जिनमें अवध के नवाब शुजाउद्दौला और दोआब के रोहिल्ला अफ़ग़ान प्रमुख थे | वहीँ दूसरी ओर मराठा सेना का नेतृत्व सदा शिव राव भाऊ के हाथ में था | जिनका साथ उनके सहयोगियों ने भी नहीं दिया था | इस वजह से इस युद्ध में मराठाओं की हार हुई थी |
मराठों के पास 45000 से 60000 की सेना थी लेकिन मराठाओं के साथ बहुत ज्यादा संख्या में आम लोग थे जो उत्तर भारत में तीर्थ स्थलों के दर्शन को साथ आ गये थे | इस लड़ाई में अब्दाली की जीत हुई और मराठाओं की हार हुई | लड़ाई के अगले दिन अब्दाली ने 40000 मराठा सैनिक कैदियों को मार दिया गया | ये लड़ाई मराठाओं के लिए एक बहुत बड़ी हार थी |

Thank for the Likes. This is not to appreciate Raghunath Rao. He was only Good as Strategic Commander of Marathas. Internal politics to keep him away proved disastrous, at the end, he became Peshawa. There was acute shortage of foresightedness in Nanasaheb in his childhood / teenager days as well Old age days. His lineage wiped out. Uniqueness of this Battle, today Lineage of Abdali and Mahadji Shinde are Alive.

Marathas don't mantain good relationships with Sikhs and Rajasthani rajput kings first maratha interfere in rajput king internal matter and second they collected money with these rajput king in the form of chauth which is biggest reason of maratha become alone in battle third maratha conquered Punjab with the help of Sikhs but unfortunately they withdraw their forces from west Punjab this creates hatred among Sikhs against Marathas for not helping them against Afghanis

मराठो को इतनी बडी लढाई सामने से लढनी नही चाहिए थी छोटे छोटे हमले करके छापामार रणनीती का साहरा लेना चाहिए था.
सुरजमल जाट की मांग मान लेनी चाहिए थी और लढाई के बाद आपस मे जो बात थी वो देख लेते.

It was stupid of Sadashivrao Bhau to get into a trap devised by Abdali by remaining passive, possibly uninformed (meaning poor in intelligence gathering), while Abdali crossed Yamuna and cut off the Marathas with South as well as Delhi. Bhau's route for getting replenishments: food, fodder, soldiers and ammunition, got cut off.This was, without doubt, the most important reason for the Maratha defeat.

There are many reasons for the Maratha defeat at Panipat. But the main reason is taking pilgrims and women (non combatants) with the army. The pilgrims slowed the movement of army, they needed food which was in short supply. Without pilgrims, in the worst case, the army could have abandoned the heavy french artilary and ran away to fight at some other time and some other place. In fact Malharrao Holkar left the fighting and survived. It took 3 days for Abdali to cross river Yamuna and Maratha did not get the news. The lax army did not post scouts to watch the Yamuna river bank. Nanasahib Peshva did not have military acumen. He could have opened a second front with the remaining army.The defeat was bad but the real ramifications of defeat came many years later. It was because of bad health of Madhavrao Peshva and his selfish uncle Raghunathrao. British historian Grant Duff has correctly stated "The planes of panipat were not more fatal than the early end of Madhavrao"
And the irony is that the good karma of the pilgrimage might not offset the bad karma of the death of so many soldiers. And God may have no choice but to work according to the law of karma despite their holiest of intentions. If it were not so, the bad people would not have such success.

In the third battle of Panipat, the Marathas fought against Ahmad Shah Abdali. The Maratha leader i.e. Sadashivrao Bhau was able to form an alliance with the charismatic Jat leader Maharaja Surajmal. But soon a discord occurred between the two and Bhau rejected the advice of Surajmal on the conduct of the war against Abdali.
“Surajmal suggested that heavy baggage, artillery, and the family members (non-combatants) are not necessary for war. He suggested that family members especially women should be stationed at Jhansi for better communication with the allied Marathas there. ”
Thousands of Maratha warriors sacrificed their lives in this war. The logistics of the Marathas were also exhausted.
If the relations of the Marathas had not deteriorated with Surajmal, they would not have had this condition in this war. Despite this, Surajmal, showing his humanity made arrangements for medical and food for the injured Maratha soldiers. Maharaja Surajmal was aware of the fact that this behavior of generosity will trigger Abdali and the latter surely attack his territory next. But proud Jat king didn’t pay any attention to these believes and did everything he could to help the retreating Marathas.

Sadashiv Bhau had asked Nanasaheb Peshwa to rush for his help with all possible force he can gather. Time was still in hand. Nanasaheb started with 40 thousand strong force, but lazily. Worse, he stopped for more than two weeks at Paithan en-route to get married to a mere eight years old beautiful girl, enjoying parties of Puran Poli, Basundi, Shrikhand Puri & Masale Bhat. What a bloody disgrace!
Had Nanasaheb (with his force) reached Yamuna instead, Abdali would have been trapped between two great battle worthy armies of Marathas and got massacred in spite of all his generalship skill.
