Great Tip as usual Alec. Pure common sense indeed. Sometimes manufacturers overingineer their products to try to make them look "cool" or differentiate them self from the competition. My rule is simple: don't overcomplicate things, keep it simple and you ll reduce the risks. Emergency situations more than often the result of an addition of small issues.
Hey Mike. How's Montana? Looking good now I'm sure. Di and I intend to do our Western trip next spring - every state from the Mighty Miss to the Rockies. Maybe we'll meet. Alec
tech tip: favorite places to dive! where to go before coral is bleached - where is it too late already... Netflix "Chasing Coral" was an eye opening making me think I ought to travel dive before it's gone (or too old).
There are still places that are as nice as in the 50s-60s but not many. Anywhere close to civilization is bound to be a mess. That ought to be a clue as to the source of the problem. Alec
My modern neoprene brand name gloves halve a zipper over the back of the hand. It runs from the root of my middle finger to the wrist. It has a nylon zipper pull and works rather well.
Thanks for all the great tech tips Alec. I once had a pair of neoprene gloves that had an elastic wrist strap with Velcro just on the very end. The strap felt snug when I bought the gloves, but over time the elastic wore out and then the strap was too long and wouldn't match the landing point of the Velcro on the glove. I agree with you. Either buy gloves without Velcro, or cut the damn things off.
The other extreme is also true. Sometimes there is too little velcro. My neoprene boots have a tiny useless velcro to secure the zipper so it does not come unzipped. A little bit more would be great. And yes, the zipper left alone gets unzipped. I guess they put the velcro there trying to hide a design flaw and callimg it " a feature"
I never had a problem with the Velcro straps but before throwing my gloves out after their worn out Darned zebra mussels I cut the Velcro straps of and repurpose them for other things
you read my mind! I hate the velcro on my gloves and been thinking of cutting it off... even shortening them out and it's really hard to pull over drysuit seals (wish it was made for latext seals connection, but that's drysuit specific). While the velcro tightens around the wrist, not sure it does much to keep water flow to a min given how it overlaps with the suit anyway....
Great tip Alec, I know that as reliable velcro can be, it can also be cumbersome and destructive. even on wetsuits that have the velcro around the neck. I have seen it fray the material so badly that it has lost it's holding power. Someday someone will come up with a better alternative. until then I will keep cutting off any velcro that is totally unnecessary.
I think you could mabey get some sort of mabey tape and make that 1 inch tab you where talking about and best part about that is if you don't like it you can take it off vs cutting off the Velcro entirely but still a great video Alec! And don't forget about Kevin to
The brand name Velcro comes from the French words Velour and Crochet. If it's not from the brand Velcro, manufacturers can't use the name and call it hook & loop. Like Walkman is a Sony brand name. From other brands it's a portable cassette player.
I dive the apostle islands in bayfield wisconsin Lake Superior it’s cold I hate the Velcro but my 7mm suit is warm I do notice a slow down in water movement when I Velcro it tight it is a nuisance to strap it I wear 3mm if I can .but if I was in warmer water I would probably cut it off
You know I have never even thought of not using the Velcro strap on my glove, I have just mindlessly wrapt it around my wrist. A couple of times I have forgotten to do up the strap, and guess what..... It made no difference. I think your right, snip it off. One less thing to have to think about and fiddle with.
I love the Velcro strap on my gloves and I use it all of the time without ANY issues at all. Certainly there is NO reason whatsoever to cut the Velcro strap off their gloves. I think that you are making a big deal about nothing this time :)
Burhaneddin Muntasser same here, and also they do keep the cold water out. If they loosen under water I immediately notice it because a gulf of fresh cold water is getting in.
Alain Dumesny "sounds like maybe your gloves are too big and not a right fit ?" I have very long, but skinny, fingers. Other than getting custom-made gloves, the only way I can get long enough gloves is to buy ones that are too big around. Like Wouter D'Haeseleer, if I don't secure the wrist-straps on mine I get too much flushing of cold water.
Except you do want your gloves secure on a motorcycle. You don't want them to come off when you're going for a slide. Leave the Velcro on your motorcycle gloves.
We are lucky to have you here
My favorite man with the expert dive plan! Thank you sir!

Yep! These gloves are often marketed as "the best" because they have a Velcro strap - NOPE!
Alec
I have always hated that Velcro strap. I'm cutting them off as the video is finishing. Thanks Alec.

Alec Peirce Scuba . Next spring we would love to have you visit and stay with us. Take care my friend and keep the great videos coming.
Excellent advice !

I've used them and they're OK so long as the zipper pull is long enough to grasp easily with a gloved hand.
Take care Jeff.

And the dive store actually tells divers that the Velcro is a good feature. I don't think they dive!!!
Thanks for watching.

That Velcro on the neck can be downright dangerous!
I have come back from a dive with a nasty, sore red welt on my neck from it.
Take care.
Alec
So glad I got a pair of pull-on type gloves. I wonder if the dive gear industry has stocks in Velcro...
Velcro is great but too much is too much.
Alec

It's hard to kick yourself underwater!
Take care.

I try not to use velcro for the reason you give. But for a title, few know what hook and loop is (and a longer title).

Straps can help slow water movement but it also constricts blood flow. Have to find a balance between the two that you like. Not easy..

One day you'll want to get a glove off in a hurry. You'll remember this video then.
Take care.

Alec Peirce Scuba shall do. While I am thinking of it, what about doing something on dive scooters for a future video?
Mr Alec did you can help me where i can fund parts for viking double house regulator
Is your intention to dive it or just restore it for display?
Alec
Agree""
Alec, have you ever watched that 70's show? Because I think Red Foreman and yourself need to talk about who your parents are.
I wonder whos foot would go in whos ass?
Instead of taking your gloves underwater, buy an order made glove with openings on the toes. Ask then to put VELCRO on it to make it easier 😂😂😂
diving topics rule. Cool.
diving stuff are welcome. Cool.

freediving stuff rule. Cool.
Same stupid thing happens with motorcycle gloves ...
Yep! I'm a long time biker too. Many problems with scuba gear apply to biking gear too.
Alec
