Both these two SUVs are targeting the same market, and both are offered in Hybrid. Also, they both offer 5 to 7 seats, in case if you need more seating but that will decrease the cargo volume behind the third row.

Both these two are my favorite SUVs, the X5 offers a lot of great features and more engine options, the XC90, offers better interior design and very minimalistic. Let me know your thoughts. The 2020 X5 hybrid hasn't arrived in Canada, and it does I will do another comparison mostly for their electric motors or maybe a drag race.

The bmw looks a little boy racer to me. The xc90 is the best looking suv around in my opinion both inside and out. It looks and feels more luxurious and premium. I think it strikes the balance best between clean design, elegance and muscular look.
Engine wise the bmw v8 is amazing. Given the choice of the two that you present and having driven both, I’d prefer the t8. More useable low down torque, faster acceleration than the bmw imho.

I test drove a 2017 BMW X5 35iDrive and loved the ride. I purchased the vehicle because of the sporty drive. I can’t imagine driving the 50iDrive V8! I may have to purchase that vehicle the next time.

I liked this review because you didn't do the usual valuing of steering, dynamics as the main focus. You explained how each car is different, more the personality of the cars. And that's what it comes down to. I have a 6-cylinder Volvo, so, it's an older generation Volvo and I prefer it to a 4. However, I'll be happy when Volvo goes electric because they are near silent and smoother and it fits Volvos personality well. This twin boosted 4 is faster than my turbo 6. But 6's are smoother. BMWS are refined though I don't like the larger grill. Doesn't make the front end look better, in my opinion. Volvo is kind of calming and BMW is athletic.
In 2019 we were searching for an SUV to replace our old (2009) Subaru Forester. We test drove the BMW X-3 and X-5, MB GLC and GLE as well as the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC90 and XC60. We did the standard tests, interior room, functionality, and ease of driving. The Volvos were in the middle of the order tested. The Mrs said we were done and wanted a Volvo straight away. I insisted on testing the others as well. We ended up with the Volvo XC60 T8 Plug in Hybrid AWD. Great choice. We are going to be looking for a new car in 2022 or 2023 as the other Subaru(2012) will be 10 years old. If Volvo has a full electric XC60 available in Canada by then we won't have a difficult choice. If not, then probably the XC40 Electric. Great cars.

Great review, loved it. Although, I love the performance and drivability of my BMW M3, the Volvo is what I prefer as a family roller. We've owned the previous model XC90 as a family car for about 10 years now and it is still going strong and feels like a tank. Once that one gives in (which I think it will go for another 5 or so years), we will upgrade to this newer design XC90.

I have had BMW's in the past including BMW X5 great cars but various consistent problems. I currently drive a Volvo great reliable car and no mechanical problems. So it's a Volvo for me as its reliable family car.

Depends on models. But mostly Volvos depreciate faster. I do think Volvos are becoming more and more expensive and that won't help against competition. As cars, they are spectacular in my opinion.

Fuel economy on the Volvo is far better than most SUVs but it does seem like bmw will offer with electric motor, 32km for Volvo vs 92 for BMW X5 phev. They aren't available yet, hence why i didn't have one. Relaibility, well every car is different.

You can’t get that model x5 with a 3rd row in hybrid form , the batteries are in the trunk floor so only non hybrid x5 a can be 7 seaters
The XC90 feels like a pretty family SUVs for the smart family guy, the X5 is to conquer the roads,until it's passed by a tesla or another german car :)

For me the sound system is important.....and nothing compares to the b & w 19 speaker system in the volvo.
Even tried the high end Burmester on MB, but no comparison.

When you passing certain areas with bad smeel (12:00) the bad smell does not enter in the x90 , they even have a air quality control brought from the experience in chinese poluted cities, a thing the bmw does not have! :) nice...
BMW has "air quality control" as standard for decades.. The ambient-air-pack is not for "smelly air" from the outside, it's intended to keep the interieur from stinking of it's passengers (sweat, smoke, etc.).
My vote 100% is to the Volvo XC90 - anytime any day. The very moment you buy a "BMW" you instantly lose ...... absolute cash burnt away.
I much more prefer the beamer. ext much better for my taste, I also like the screens better on the beamer int.

I really am a fan of BMW but the "new" design just doesn't do it for me. That X5 is fugly! The Volvo on the other hand is drop down gorgeous! And it drives good, too. However, it's a shame that you can only get inline 4's with Volvo nowadays. For this kind of car, it has to be a six-cylindre, V8 or fully electric. The rattle of that inline-4 just isn't befitting a car of that class and prize. And it gets even worse if you pick the diesel-engine...
BMW does offer the kick open trunk. It's on our 2018

Can I just mention that the XC90 key fob is leather clad in the same colour that you have chosen for your interior so it matches your car. 😉

No. You can’t. They engineered it so that you can never reach highway speeds. Like ever. Some people have died of thirst and hunger trying. Quite sad.

Sam CarLegion I watched that, but the Lincoln is better suited to compete with the XT4. Hell the wheelbase of the xt4 is four inches longer than the Corsair’s so the XT5 is huge compared to the Lincoln..
The XC90 feels like a family SUVs for the family guy, the X5 is to conquer the roads... especially the 50i M

I'll take the Volvo hands down. I don't trust BMWs reliability. Everyone I know that owns or have owned a BMW only have bad things to say about their reliability and I can contest to that sentiment. I had a 3 series and had nothing but endless issues with the transmission. Never again!!!!
BMW is fine for leasing but not for owning outside of warranty.

What’s New for 2020
Model year 2020 it is still more or less same car as 2015 .There are some exterior styling changes, including a new concave grille, restyled front and rear bumpers, new wheel designs and some new color options. Roof rails, 19-inch wheels and integrated tail pipes are also standard now. R-Design models add gloss-black accents for the side mirrors, window trim and the roof rails. Aside from the grille, the changes will be hard to pick out - the XC90 was quite handsome before and still is, unrelated to these tweaks.
Inside, the changes are more substantial. A 12.3-inch display is now standard as the driver’s instrument panel, and the XC90 is now offered in a six-seat configuration with captain’s chairs for the second row. This no-brainer addition was always a curious omission for the XC90, which launched a four-seat edition of the SUV before this. The blind spot warning systems adds automatic braking as well.
Your numbers are off 40i does a zero to 60 in 4.9 secs, for a t8 inscription price you can get a fully loaded 40i and it will still cost a bit less, for a fully loaded t8 inscription Volvo you can get a 50i.
Isn't the X5 M50i the top range of X5 series. That's before you cross over to the full fledged M series. The BMW X5M.

It was a great video. But omce u started driving.. There wasn't much good content in either cars but just a lot of talking abt what ur doing as u go and then a conclusion and ur opinion (which is usually the most important part of a review video) was missing which was highly disappointing

Hello there, I love your reviews and I A D O R E Canada! In my country, Greece, the Volvo XC90 T8 fully equipment costs 120.631 euro. The BMW X5 xDrive40i fully equipment costs 155.367 euro. The money difference is 34.736 euro or (34.736*100/120.861=28.74) the BMW is more expensive 28.74%. Of course the BMW is better (silencer, more bells and whistles, faster in curves) but is n o t 30% (rounded up) better than Volvo. The BMW X3 40i fully equipment costs 118.490 euro. The money difference (BMW X3-Volvo XC90) is 2.371 euro or (2.371*100/118.490=2) 2% less expensive than Volvo. Of course the Volvo XC90 T8 is WAY better than BMW X3 40i (for family SUV).
Giorgos Seitaridis , same here in Norway app 30% more for the X5! The XC90 is outselling the x5 except for the e45 X5 that is relatively better priced due to taxes. I have a 2020 i8 with laser light but my XC90 with Its LED Matrix system is better.

The review is v e r y good, exterior/interior space, SAFETY, driving the city, parking, driving in highway and congratulations for not testing 0-200km/track, for God sake are FAMILY Suv. Vice versa if compare Mercedes C63 AMG, BMW M3, Alfa Romeo Julia QV (a beautiful, gorgeous, divine, in love, literally smiling, comparison), 0-200, track must occur. Safety is critical, babies/children/family is the true meaning for 3 rows SUV (NCAP Volvo XC90 97% > BMW X5 89%). My opinion, no no no, common logic is every reviewer/press/youtuber should compare cars with 0-10% financial range, normal cars except hyper/super cars and Bentley-Maybach because cost climbs to stratosphere when…money is not a problem. I shouldn’t reductio ad absurdum but you shouldn’t not compare, example, Toyota Corolla Vs Rolls Royce Phantom… I s w e a r, Phantom is better.
Wow, you guys must be very rich over there in Greece. 120k for XC90??? I got my XC90 T6 last year, payed 54000 usd for it. Loving it! Also driving a 2020 Cayenne S at the moment. Volvo’s interior quality is much better than Porsche’s, but cayenne drives better of course.

The Volvo has only 4wheelsdrive if battery has power.
I think it’s technically true but shouldn’t run out of battery since it charges the battery nearly constantly as needed if the engine is running. I also believe that the AWD is partial time system not full time which means in normal circumstances shouldn’t ever encounter this issue of battery being too depleted for AWD use.
You can switch into 4w drive without electric motor.
The BMW does have the ting when you put your leg under the Car

love the exterior of the Volvo MUCH more than the BMW. I like the interior of the BMW more than the Volvo. The Volvo is just too overkill and tacky to me. I do like the dash but I have never been a fan of oversized tablet-sized displays for the control center. Which is the primary reason I don't like the interior design of Tesla's

The question should be about the BMWs engine durability after 100k 200k and 300k. BMWs are nothing more than money pits as a former owner. I've had two Volvos and what a huge difference. My first Volvo had over 200000 miles and could've went even further. My new XC90 has been extremely reliable nothing more than my regular scheduled maintenance. If you take care of your Volvo trust me it will take care of you. My BMW transmission went out at only 70000 miles. Never again! TRIED Volvo and never looked back
If you look at reliability reports, none of German holy trinity are known to be reliable cars. I think, if memory serves me well, the Sweeds are a more reliable brand than the 3 Germans. Having said, if you want to talk about reliability for luxury cars, it's always going to be Lexus across the board from any list compiled
