@@lastpenny849 I agree with you . This technical progress just completely change sailing . After watching Americas Cup 2021 I miss races like this in 2007 😔Real sailing not flying
Isn't it wonderful to watch these fantastic 12-meter boats much better than the things they're using today, this is what sailing is all about.................
Except these were IACC boats, not 12 Meters. But agreed, much better than the flying "boats" they use now; although at least they've gone back to monohulls and soft sails - but still foiling so not much improvement.
As a Kiwi just gutted , more so in San Francisco but also in Valencia. TNZ always had chances to win both , just too many mistakes by Barker in both cups !!
The Thing is it's As palatable as Fast Food ~ Sweet but no Substance ...Did you consider going Below and Making a Cuppa ( that the Trade off of Sailing ...Plus A Ginger nut Biscuit _ Hard Tack for Blue Water )🔱🤔🔩🫖🦕🦈🐙🍿
Apart from the fact that's a superb race, I think 2007 was a negative watershed for the AC. Almost the last of the big dinosaurs and real racing on semi-open water with tactics, trim and guile. Now it seems we have incredible technology, matched only by the levels of corporate and sponsor's bullshit and all taking place in an overgrown wet dock..... These monohulls are great but sad to see crew racing mainly for their career rather than their country (though I'm sure some were).
AC version 5 did the job within Sailor's my community but never hooked more fans and struggle to grow the audience. New era is here and we should embrace it. Close combat, fast machines, epic spectacle on water, great digital content and better public engagement. This will only take our sport to an new audience and hopefully will be in the same league like motorsports
"Close combat, fast machines, epic spectacle" OK sure but it's not what the America's Cup was all about. AC is (was) yachting, not race cars and crash helmets. Don't get me wrong, I like watching foiling cats do flips as much as the next guy, but it isn't taking "our sport" to a new audience; it's taking a new sport to an audience not interested in sailing. Leave the high speed thrills and spills spectacle to speedboats on water and Indy cars on land.
If you want to drink a coffee during such a slow tour, yes. If you want to see high-tech sailing, no. It's like having the old cars compared to modern F1. At their time, ok, but as someone said, the future is always in the future.
The technical advances of the foiling cats is amazing, and it's great the crowds can view the racing nowadays. Pity it's rather dull compared to the old monohulls.
Dull?? I understand the controversy/criticism/nostalgia of the cats v.s. mono's in the Am Cup. After all, for over 100 years there were no Cat's in the Cup and such radical changes are naturally unsettling to tradition. However, I never followed the Cup until what I saw on San Francisco Bay in September, 2013. I don't believe we will EVER see are more exciting, grueling, come-from-behind regatta as that. How can words describe it? Kenny Read and Gary Jobson would likely agree. The images of those boats flying neck-and-neck at over 40 knots and taking flight while bearing away from the marks at close to 50 mph left me speechless and are unforgettable.
When the "challenge option" was used by Australia in th early 90's they changed to a much bigger monohull boat which pissed off the USA who wanted neither change nor an early challenge for the cup so America built a catamarans. Just a passing contest, basically.
Barker did a great job in Valencia in 2007, with a boat which was slower than the SUI 100. In San Francisco he made mistakes, but in the last races, Oracle was much more faster tan ETNZ
he lacked the nerve to win it in the crunch. could well have called alinghi's bluff and gone crossed 2nd windward mark, could well have hurt alinghi a lot more in the prestart jousting.
What I don't understand is that Alinghi was close-hauled on starboard, the Kiwis began a tack from port to starboard, Alinghi bore off their proper course by about 40 degree to run down onto the Kiwi boat to force the penalty. How is that legitimate?
The rules of yacht racing are just rubbish and need a major overhaul all this windward boat must give way, WHY?? They just make it confusing to keep it elite
Just watched this again now that we have won it again , I still find it hard to fathom how Alinghi got enough speed up to close the gap but anyway I doubt NZ would have won 3 races in a row. No way.
I don't understand how that would that have helped.I would've thought it would've been better to just have done the penalty as close as possible to the finish line, as they had to crawl the last stretch after the penalty. I guess they would've lost overall even if they'd won this though. At least it was a competitive final series for a change!
Though these boats are slower, their speed allows for better match racing. The new cup boats are exciting and follow in the tradition of AC innovation but it seems their races are won in the pre-race. 80% of the time, the boat that gets the jump ahead in the pre-race wins. Also, they don’t run, only jibe and tack so no beautiful spinnakers for speed and dramatic effect. The current boats would pitch-pole.
Well said mate, he's an asshole to those who know him, in Annapolis where I live they think he's something special but to those in the industry he's about the biggest prick on two legs.... he's trying again in this next cup, he's either going to lose or get booted from the syndicate like he did with the swedes.....
finally a genuine race of America's Cup! beautiful :)
this is soooo much better than the racing they do now///////this is SAILING
Na, now is way better
this has more of my atention than the more current races. those foiling boats are cool... for like 10 minutes.
What a race
I wish there was video or gps tracks from older Cup races. This is one of the most amazing races ever.
Amazing race. Miss these big slow boats. Very tactical. Like playing Chess on the sea.
AtomSmash3r still, but holy crap look how far we've come in 10 years !
Ты прав дружище.
Очень не хватает.
Эти катамараны летающие - уже совсем не то, просто шоу.
Привет из Владивостока
Yes, real racing and tactics. Love the Spinnakers.
These boats are not slow. Just not built like today, but for a traditional mono-hull, they are as fast as it gets.
@@lastpenny849 I agree with you . This technical progress just completely change sailing . After watching Americas Cup 2021 I miss races like this in 2007 😔Real sailing not flying
Man, I feel like the graphics for the viewers at home were better then as well 😂😂😂
Altri tempi, grandi emozioni, belle regate, grandi uomini.
Top top top, never get boring, miss this racing
Has to be the most exciting finish I've ever seen in yachting.
Back when the Sailing was not a speed race but a Seamanship
I think it helps to appreciate both types of racing. I tend to agree re the older boats but the AC72's, 50's and 75's are amazing machines nonetheless

True match race. True emotions
Quelle manche fantastique ! Un pied à regarder à nouveau !
Can’t ask for more from a yacht race. Nail bighting!
La mejor regata que eh visto en mi vida y creo que la mejor de la historia, Madre mia!!!!

I came to rewatch this after the boredom of watching the foiling monohulls in the 36th AC
But how can you ? These boats are so SLOOOOW you know ? I mean their are so slow...
I came here to ridicule this watching-paint-dry boredom festival.
Thank Kiwis for foils!
Up next will be supercavitating blown foils and 60+ knots.
same. Except 3 years later, watching the snore-fest of the 37th defender series.
So did I after watching the latest A.C. races in Barcelona
hell of a race amazing despite the eventual result

The problem in is the costs of the boat and program. We need more race entrants.
that depends on what you consider the 'sport' to be. Match racing is so much more than going fast
I want to see those foils in open waters

This broke my heart watching this.
That was a brilliant race. Gorgeous sailing. Pity 34 and 35 are taken off-line. Monohulls rule by default, lol :)
Why.? You can still find them. 33 L. V. & A.C. are the ones I can't find....
Really miss these big bastards. Way more tactics in it than with the foiling cats
...and boring than cats

This is the real deal folks. Why did they decide to ruin the Americas cup with those stupid foiling boats?

That's sailing, doing some jobs with the pole, I miss those days today America's cup is not even fun to watch a bunch of guys pedaling.
Amazing raising the Spinnaker, we don't see that on America's cup anymore
how ironic guess who is in the commentators. its jimmy !

Real boats ! Sorry the AC is finished for me , it’s not yachting 😩
2009 Louis Vuitton Pacific Series Videos will start coming next week.
Thriller!
This comment section seems like old people... I'm old myself but have adjusted to foiling and loving it!
More interesting for the crew in these boats
Woah Jimmy spitball commentating!
Bring back the IACC!
I have enjoyed parts of the AC 75 but this still leaves it for dead if you like sailing...This is chess not draughts.
Why didn't NZ head up more and shut them out at the start?
+blumnt Dean Barker thats why!
Also..... why didn't new Zealand go right on leg 3 ......

voila des bateaux, tactique Spiietc ... rien a voir avec l'aviation d'aujourd'hui ou c'est à mourrir d'ennui
The right paid for Alinghi on every beat....NZ had plenty of opportunities to cross and for the life of me l can't understand why they didn't...

New Zealand so threw that race away three separate times

Yes, he joined the commentators after his team(Luna Rossa) lost the Louis Vuitton final.
If Barker had done the 360 immediately on taking the lead he would have in. Alinghi took over 30 sec to get the downed sail in, BAD mistake.

Best Ameroca's Cup ever! Please TNZ don't sell out to TV money and bring 'sailing' back to the America's Cup
I hope one day AC turn back to this big boat... Foils are funny but for few minutes...
We love tactics, not speed ...
This race when the Americans change the rules, should be still 12 m boats. It made this rad a joke
Whe it was reak sailing .. now it's just boring cat's in their cockpit trully boring !!
This is true Americas Cup! Todays cats hasn't poetry of sailing...
Worst class of AC boats ever. Slow, boring, and incapable of a D.O.G. race.
Kiwis racing kiwis - think Alinghy crew were more excited about their bonusses for winning than actually defending the Cup I am sure.
Fermi rispetto agli ac75
The penalty on the Kiwis was bogus. You have to allow a boat the opportunity to keep clear. They were given no possibility.
Race report ? Lächerlich und viel zu kurz ! 👎
Sorry but NZL deserved to lose that race. AWFUL TACTICS BY HUTCH!!!!

No shit about health and safety back then
Way more dangerous now anyway I would think, with the very high speeds, capsizing/tipping, etc. One sailor already died in practice.
