Thank you! *To clarify - This video is my opinion.* The mods in the video are not bad and will most likely not break your game. I simply believe there are better alternatives for most of them. For FNIS - FNIS has creature support whereas Nemesis doesn't. If you want creature animations, you should keep FNIS or consider using Pandora. However, if you only want to focus on player/NPC animations, Nemesis or Pandora should be your go-to. For Alternate Start - I still use Alternate Start and it's great! For survival mods - Sunhelm is purely my mod of choice given its simplicity. There is nothing wrong with the other mods. For NPC mods - I recommend you try them and see if they work for yourself. Mod authors put a lot of work in these mods and I don't want to out anyone or their work down. I suggest you try the mods you want to try and see if they work for yourself. You might not encounter the issues I said in the video. Every mod list is different. :)
The reason the community has beef with arthmoor is due to his incredibly anti-Community stance regarding the unofficial Skyrim special edition patch. He now only supports the version of his patch designed for bethesda's latest official update and only supports mods that are compatible with bethesda's official update . He has actively gone out of his way to remove or delete all older versions of the patch meaning there's no technically legal way for users on older versions of the game such as the pre-anniversary and pre-creation versions to get the unofficial patch which many mods that are beloved by the community required to run. If asked about older versions of The Unofficial patch he will actively block or delete the comment or even ban the user and will often reply with something condescending like "the game is old move on abandon your old mods that are not compatible with my patch" and offers no support to the community. Also in recent years he has asked a few other creators such as juicehead to delete their channels for one reason or another. He's become a rather toxic individual which is why I now back up older versions of his patch in remove all other mods by him from my load order. Same goes for Fallout 4
@@alexwalters35 there's actually a lot of reasons to not be on the latest version of Skyrim. First of all most people never asked for these updates yet every time they do they introduce new bugs new issues poorly integrated DLCs and of course breaks the script extender which most modern mods rely on. Not to mention some of the best mods on the Nexus are from Mod authors that have since stepped away from the community usually due to things like bethesda's updates and there haven't been modern Alternatives produced by other mod authors. Also when the game updates if you had any mod that was specific to the version of the game you were playing on before you now have to wait to continue with your load order for that mod author to update which may or may not ever occur. So it is always best to stick to whatever version of the game provides the best compatibility for your specific load order. I stick with the original anniversary edition patch because I had no interest in the creations and there are many brilliant mods that have since reintegrated or rebalanced the AE content . As for Fallout 4 the modding Community is nowhere near as large and robust and due to previous issues with Bethesda in the past many mod authors have left so the only way to get access to many of the game's great mods is to stick to the version that was stable for years prior to the Next Gen update which has introduced a slew of new problems. But it really just comes down to what your load order that you want to use requires as there may be some features you want in your game that are only available for a mod for a specific version and you as a player should not be required to abandon or miss out on the experience you want with your game because one specific mod author is gatekeeping the community or because Bethesda keeps trying to squeeze money out of a decade ish old game. You should always use whatever version of the game is best for the load order you are trying to create so luckily it is very easy to download specific game versions and prevent updates using steam console and there are plenty of ways to find older versions of The Unofficial patch it is important for the bug fixes it provides through archived links that bypass the authors attempts to hide them
The man is toxic and full of himself, yes. But honestly, there is no reason to use an older version of USSEP, since the latest version is compatible with all versions of the game. The problem is that Arthmoor doesn't explain that because that seems to be beneath him. Also, it is the community's fault, since no one has come up with something that competes with USSEP. In a way, we got what we deserved with him.
@@cjaquino28 i realize that now. but at the time i wasn't using the "best of both worlds" option for the downgrade patcher. so i had to find an older version.
To reprise a comment I made last week about a JSON library, there is such a thing as mature, stable code that doesn't need to be updated. Just because a mod hasn't had an update in several years doesn't mean it is broken, it is often preferable to a newer mod that is constantly being updated to fix bugs.
I think I stopped tracking or using a couple mods precisely because they kept getting updated practically every single day--maybe even multiple times per day. Also because of this tendency, I'm pretty wary about installing a mod on its release date, especially if the mod is a big one.
That's rarely the case with more complex mods though, they usually just get abandoned with whatever bugs they have as the modder moves on to other stuff. Then Skyrim updates and half the stuff breaks.
It's a nice dream to have, but the reality is that most mods get abandoned mid development, and then on top of that they get f ed over by a random update that todd decides to release
@@101Mant no, that's misleading. when skyrim updates the mods that are going to be incompatible are SKSE-based mods (the ones with .dll plugin). mods that "break" usually are users' errors. users always install lots of stuff without even knowing that two-three mods are doing the same thing.
Yup. Code for some mods will never need updating accept for how Bethesda has the entry point for mods. They allow mods but it's not "friendly" though it is the most open studio to modding.
The Notice Board and Missives are really complimentary mods. Completely compatible with each other and not being updated in years doesnt matter as they are complete and finished products.
Yeah the dude who made the notice board (or i think the other) loved the others mod so much he made another version with more quests and made sure to make it compatible
I always wanted to try that mod but can u says little thing about that mod pls,I had that mod in my 6.640 now I m on 1170 but not instal that mod cause I don't see anything different on npc what that mod actually do
Yeah im on board with like...90% of the things mentioned in this mod. When he mentioned the populated cities mod i fully agreed, its broken my game before. But cutting interesting npcs...heresy of the highest order and i require an apology asap. Jk, but yeah, Interesting npcs is a mainstay for me and ive never had crash issues with it. Worst thing ive had is ai pathing issues, something ive experienced plenty of times in vanilla skyrim.

@@petitemerald Well, I also still have FNIS but I am able to run it and NEMESIS simultaneously due to some code hacking my wife did (She knows code and has many friends who are modders). How to use xp32 on nemesis then if not going to use fnis .for my case nemesis always says failed to generate,so I have both fnis and nemesis then it works, pls help
Throughout watching this, ive realized my mod list that ive been using for YEARS had both the "old/outdated" mods and the "use these insted mods", for almost every mod you mentioned. This really cleaned my modlist of things I didnt even know I still had.
Pandora is now a replacement for Nemesis and doesn't die when you have too many animations Edit: I paused literally the moment before you mentioned Pandora lmao
I need a proper guide on how to switch from nemesis to pandora I have 10 k animations and too many behaviors I dont wanna risk it I tried it but there was no showing it so if you find link to any guides or could make a guide urself you're welcome to share I really need it
@@shaun.shub2003 nemesis is also being rewritten and its possible you inevitably might need to spend a lot of time fixing things related to animations. I'm just guessing
@AubreyOnfroy Pandora is still new, so give it some time, it will mature soon. In the meantime, I'll finish the rewrite. There will be big changes to it and I'm in talks with monitor (pandora's author) about the upcoming changes to ensure compatibility
2:18 I wouldn't really say that Campfire/Frostfall/Last Seed are going to risk damaging your save or computer more than any other set of mods, they're just a little more mechanically complex is all. They're also all just as configurable as Sunhelm, and have a great amount of mod support. The only area they're kinda lacking in is the UI department, but you can fix that yourself using and configuring the iWantStatusBars mod. If you want to use Sunhelm or Starfrost or CC Survival mode, more power to you. But there's no reason to warn people away from older or more complex mods in doing so.
No, no, the other Survival mods don't break anything But the complex mechanics would be a turn off for new players who might see those being the most popular of the category
@@NarivaTV I actually prefer iNeed not going to lie. Mostly because I tried Sunhelm some time back and I'm not sure if this is still a thing at that time it integrated itself into the CC Survival mode. Meaning, when you tried to uninstall it then it would cause issues with your game requiring a full reinstall and clean to remove it. Now that might have changed when I tried it but it's one reason I started to curse that mod and went back to iNeed. Which is fine because I have done many playthrough's with it without issue.
I totally agree, I would have preferred a video title saying "show case of great mods" rather than just trying to denigrate other mods that still work without problems today. A good finished mod does not need to be fixed like many of those that are presented today with bug fixes everywhere and patches needed for 50% of other mods, but maybe the creator of the video needed to upload something and made a rejoin. I also found it insulting how they keep putting titles that do not correspond to what they show or "To clarify - This video is my opinion. The mods in the video are not bad and will most likely not break your game", it becomes more notable how they laugh at those who watch the videos, treating them as mentally incapacitated in order to deceive them.
Since I have been testing mods for my 1700+ load order, I will write here my own opinion on the mods mentioned. Sunhelm: Amazing and more lightweight substitute to Frostfall. Takes care of the cold survival part as well as hunger, sleep and thirst needs. Also surprisingly compatible with pretty much every other mod. I also recommend Cold Behavior, a mod that makes NPCs wear warm clothing in cold areas. Wet & Cold is what most people use for that but in my experience it causes a lot of random CTDs, while Cold Behavior does basically the same but with less issues. Alternate Start: Personally I still stick to this one since its the most popular and got patches for pretty much every mod out there, also Skyrim Unbound while pretty good it skips some of the main quests, which cause issues with some mods, mostly dragon related. Honestly the only thing I dont like about Alternate Start is that it adds some NPCs and buildings to the game to compliment some of the start scenarios it has, but its not enough to be an issue. OBIS: Installed this one pretty recently actually, and other than a crash I had related to other mod (which I already removed), OBIS runs pretty well for me, and the bandit it adds are so fun to fight that its a must have mod for me now. Highly recommend it for enemy variation, and you can increase or decrease enemy quantity. Interesting NPCs: I was really confused that this guy doesnt seem to like this mod. Interesting NPCs is a must for me and pretty much everyone playing Skyrim. It never caused CTDs for me to the point I wouldnt use it tbh. It does adds buildings in locations that might conflict with other mods you have, but usually theres patches to fix that. The NPCs in this mod are definitely worth installing the mod. Notice Board: Another confusing one. I legit have Notice Boards, Missives, and Headhunter, all three in my load order for YEARS now and never had a single issue with them. Other than conflict with city mods of course, but theres patches to fix those. Capital Whiterun Expansion: This and Windhelm Expansion are amazing city mods and must have for me, but they can definitely hit your FPS pretty hard. And they conflict a lot with other mods, but theres patches to fix conflicts so imo they are still worth using if you want bigger cities. I also recommend Solitude Expansion but that one has even more conflicts since the dock area is also changed so keep that in mind. Immersive Equipment Display: I love this mod and I thought I would never stop using it, but sadly in my own experience I found out that it was causing my game to freeze/CTD during combat with many enemies. Like, my game crashed 3 times when I was trying to clear a bandit fort, and by chance I decided to turn IED off and I was surprised at how smooth the fight went. This might be just me tho, since my game always spawns a huge group of enemies, but I think its worth mentioning. Northern Roads: So this mod was a HUGE hassle to use, and it still requires a TON of patches for conflicts, but I pretty much made it work flawlessly after I set it at the very end of my load order priority. Turns out that LOOT can place this mod and its patches in wrong priorities due to LOOT not recognizing it in the right category of mods, so you have to manually make the mod overwrite everything else you got. That legit fixed every conflict this mod had in my 1700+ load order.
Many people have been using it fine for years. It rarely adds more than a couple of NPCs to any given location so the argument that the engine can't cope really doesn't hold up. Some of the quests are buggy but worse case you can't finish that quest. It's not a simple as more NPCs equals bad, its too many NPCs in the same 0oace, particularly outdoors in cities causes problems.
@@KevinAkash-u5f Pretty much none of the mods cause an issue if you're only using like 10-20 mods in total. But if you have an 500+ mod skyrim, it can indeed cause unwanted complications and problems in various, often subtle ways, if you use the some of the things mentioned in the video.
This kind of video is much needed. Every video talks about mods you need to have, but no one talks about bad mods you need to get rid of for the sake of stability of your game. Subscribed.
Ya but this guys pc is modern top of the line while the other millions of regular players out there still use their still working older pc and graphics.
He is just trashing mods for no reason, clearly demonstrated that he doesn't know how to setup his own mod list and goes around giving advise based on his own misinformation
It's good if your game is stable! Depending on what other mods you have, you can run into issues such as AI incompatibility or crashes. But hey, if you have it and it works, keep it! :D I also have some mods on the list that I am keeping, but they would be hard to recommend to other people given some incompatibility issues (Like Capital Whiterun Expansion or JK's Skyrim, which I LOVE)
@@RefRed_King interesting NPCs doesn't crash the game. Simply knock doesn't crash the game. CGO is and all around improvement on vanilla combat. I'm describing reality, not hating... These "don't install mods" advise has to be given waaaay more carefully, not just "it's bad, trust me"
On one hand I love northern roads. On the other I hate it because it loves to crash your game and needs a thousand different patches to even have a chance at working.
u can have northern roads and put mds for "no roads" on top of it, so u won't have roads, but only clutter and bridges there's also "no roads no bridges" version on case u want to use other bridges i personally use the second option with some other mods for roads and bridges and it works just fine, environment cluttered very nicely))
I mean, the amount of ego they would need to have to get angry cuz someone say "Hey there is a better mod than your mod that you haven't update in 5+ years..."
This video feels so misleading. I do not think any one of the mods in this video need to be avoided. Some are just different choices. Some newer ones don't even cover all features of the ones you want them to replace (e.g. Nemesis, Community Shader). Even using DAR is fine for some use cases and since it can be uninstalled any time, it doesn't matter if someone accidentally used it. And why "the mod hasn't been updated for years" is a reason not to use it? Most of those mods are finished products and they simply do not need updates at all. This is the same as USSEP using its description to trick people to update their Skyrim.exe. The better way to avoid CTDs is to just read mod descriptions before install, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
It's not misleading. He gives every reason for a mod being here. Let's work on media literacy. You are taking personal nitpicks and ignoring most of the reasons given. Weird. No one is putting a gun to your head. A basic fact of modding is that issues aren't a guarantee so it is understood from the start that these won't necessarily break your game.
Really, the best thing you can do to improve your Skyrim experience is to replace mods that use a lot of scripts with mods that don't use as many (or don't use scripts at all, if possible). While modern hardware (and even slightly less modern hardware) can generally handle the load, it's more things that can go wrong, more scripts that can get orphaned, more opportunities for memory leaks, more, more, more. Sometimes less is actually more; simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
This. Any time you see a mod and when you hit download it gives you that pop-up saying "THIS MOD REQUIRES: SKSE version 2.1.34.6.2.98, SKSE Script Extender, SKSE Script Extender Extender 2.1.8995c hotfix, bunghole69's Extended Script Extender Toolset, RandomJackoff88's Annoying Dependencies...", you know you're gonna have a bad time.
@@Charlie-vp5tn Hard to say without actually seeing the list (and can't just ask for one since YT doesn't have DMs), BUT: Any mod that modifies NPC behavior or adds new NPCs will have scripts. Unfortunately, these generally can't be replaced with lite or free mods and you have to rely on the author implementing them cleanly. Any mod that adds new areas will have scripts. As above, these can't be replaced with lite or free mods and you have to rely on the author implementing them cleanly. Any mod that gives additional actions that don't come with the game (e.g. dodge mods) often have scripts. For many of them, there are modern mods that have a lightweight script load or no scripts. Lastly, the ReSaver tool is pretty great. One of the critical things it can do is analyze your save file and actually identify orphaned scripts (and then remove them from the save instance). Be careful doing this, because there are some mods that deliberately create orphaned scripts and need them in place to run, but memory serving while I don't think it directly tells you the mod the script came from, it provides enough information that you can identify which mod created them. Ok, _lastly_ lastly, unless your machine is very old or a sweet potato, a high script load probably isn't going to cause a crash because it consumes too many resources. I'm not an expert, but it sounds to me like you have a mod collision; two or more mods that are trying to do incompatible things at the same time. Hate to say it, but about all you can do in those instances is start from scratch with no mods at all, and then add them in one at a time until you figure out which mod introduces the issue.
yeah dont go by endorsements, go for the category and sort by release from recent to stoneages then you'll find the newer and often better or at least lighter ones or atleast patches or patches for the old stuff, navigating the site more efficiently and smarter often helps to find what you need, want and didnt even knew you wanted till you found it.^^

THANK YOU, didnt realize Paartysnacks dilemma was the reason the main quest line was crashing so much, as soon as i got rid of it and used what you recommended i went back through the main missions and no crashes
The Paartysnacks Dilemma was going Allahu Snaackbar. I've been having that problem, too. Part of me is ashamed that a guy who is obviously running some questionable coomer mods is the reason I've fixed it. It would be like if MxR helped me get more back on my tax returns. On the one hand, thanks bro, on the other hand, I would hate to see your keyboard under a blacklight.
I had to stop watching and I as a rule trust your judgement, but so many of the suggested mods have a ghastly number of bugs and people complaining in comments they don't work correctly.
In this day and age of skyrim modding you just need to try avoiding mixing systems that accomplish the same thing, for example if your installing animation mods you have to pick FNIS or nemesis. You can technically get them working together but it's not a good idea so you should pick old and a larger selection or new and a smaller collection.
for all that's holy, no, I'll NEVER remove 3D NPCS from my load order. I'm running 700+ mods and never had a single issue with Interesting NPCs. Other than that, solid video!
Yeah, I tried Simple Hunting overhaul and it was too... simple. To the point where it just felt like the regular loot menu with one extra step. There's nothing wrong with that of course, and did like that the animal was actually replaced with a skinned version, but other then that it wasn't really immersive for me. I guess I'm just too used to the more complex mods.
Realm of Lorkhan does not work well with Athrmoors Open Cities or SR Exterior Cities without copious amount of patches and will load you into the old interior city cell and can cause random guard encounter with a fire atronauch with guard dialogue arresting you and taking you back to Lorkhan. Probably best to avoid this one.
Thanks for this list. I barely just jumped back into Skyrim after probably 7 years. Seeing the Nolvus videos made me reinstall the game. My game loads slow when starting up after installing Nolvus though. It's strange because I installed it on a brand new SSD drive. My rig is also brand new and uses 4090, i9 processor, and has 32gigs of RAM.
Oh don't worry too much about it, Nolvus is a goddamn behemoth to load. I usually start MO, then start Nolvus, and then go for a smoke and pour myself some coffee after I come back inside. It usually JUST finishes loading when I get back in my room.
@@ofnir123 Thanks for the info. I'm curious about something else now. The Nolvus website said to do a plugins sorting using the built in LOOT for MO2 after installation. Did you do this? I did it an hour ago and LOOT still isn't done sorting the plugins.
@@Constellasian I Don't sort using Loot after, just leave it in the order it's in already within MO2. Still takes ages to boot up, but it's loading a LOT of mods (Nolvus).

I don't get the issue with Northern Roads. Yes, it requires a lot of patches, which kinda makes sense since it affects EVERY road in Skyrim, but most of the patches are nicely bundeled and I haven't had any issues at all using it along with several city expansion mods and Lux Via. The only thing that might be an issue is NGIO, but then again, recreating grass cache is a good thing to do in general if you have a lot of mods that add objects in the world..
don't mind it buddy, I for example am a Lux and JK Skyrim user and enjoyer even tho both mods require tons of patches if you want to use it with other mods. Well if you do it right and know how to tweak your own load order I see no problem in it using some mods which are told by other to let go off.
That's the thing though. It requires a lot of patches and a lot of beginner modders will be turned off. I use Northern Roads and I love it but I have to admit that I spent some good hours patching everything out.
@@NarivaTV Nah, the FOMOD handles all of that patching quite easily. I recently shoved Northern Roads and all of its patches into my old playthrough while I was checking out a lengthy quest mod that took me around Skyrim, and I was honestly shocked how well it worked alongside all of the old crap that I have in my ancient save.
Instead of Northern Roads you can use "Simplest Roads" which removes the cobblestones just like NR, just without the extra bits. But you can use another mod like Lux Via to spice up the roads!
A big note on MCO, DMCO, etc. At some point while installing these mods and their dependencies on the latest version of SSE, you will run into a problem: Animation Motion Revolution, which has not been updated in a while, has no comment from the author either and appears to have been abandoned with support only up to several patches ago. However, despite this, AMR works perfectly fine on 1.6.1170, allowing dodges and most custom MCO movesets to function correctly. Unfortunately to find this out you have to install it just hoping that its own description is wrong (which it is) or scroll past a page of comments begging the author to update it to find the one where somebody says the mod still works fine on every version up to 1.6.11xx. Also I got clickbaited by Northern Roads in the thumbnail. I already avoid city overhauls because my current install is on Deck and I don't think I could maintain a stable framerate with those AND ENB (tried to live without it, can't), but even dirty edits from other mods cause issues like gaps in the land. Irritating that it's 2024 and so many mods still have dirty edits in the first place.
Yeah NR is a real nice mod, bu also a huge PITA and needs tons of patches, if you change anything ever so sligthly and it gets really nasty when you then want to combine it with the entire LUX suite and stuff, not to mention city expansions, outskirts and home/villagemods and so on... Pi-Cho ENB is still my goto with Azurite weathers, its just so...yummy.
@@wolfwilkopter2231 How does pi-cho compare to silent horizons in terms of performance? Unfortunately Skyrim is not one of thise games that runs surprisingly well on Deck, but Silent Horizons hasn't hurt my framerate too badly. Serenity had my favourite shaders for an enb back in the day, but iirc it was taken down or an update ruined it and the old version was no longer available, something like that.
@@vitriolicAmaranth Well Pi-Cho is based on Silent Horizons, with a few tweaks here and there and i run a 3080 12Gig Aorus Master so that has enuff power to keep me atleast on the 60fps mark in QHD...i guess the differences in performance are marginal, but i must admit that i never tested the original silent Horizons ENB, but V2 looks awesome and tempting... I just took NR with Pi-Cho and Azurite weathers for the entire look they provide, turning Skyrim into the Witcher 3 Weather and Lighting wise and NR for the feel, like beeing in Skellige again.^^
@@wolfwilkopter2231 I do love the aesthetics of TW3, though I'd say SH already looks like that a lot of the time (just not 100% of the time; it looks its best when it's raining around sunrise or sunset, but often it barely looks better than vanilla indoors apart from AO).
Whenever the community complains about random Skyrim updates that break modlists, there are people who respond "well duh just don't update the game then". But then there are also mod authors like Arthmoor. Who, for whatever reason, makes it difficult for players to support older version of the game.
I would rather have the game crash while having Interesting NPCs on than not have it crash without it. That mod alone is the reason for the game being worth playing anymore.
Until Nemesis or Pandora adds in support for creature/non-human animations, I'll have a reason to stick with FNIS. There's actually a way to make them work together though, so I can have custom animal and demon attack animations, while also using CGO.
Sunhelm instead of Frostfall? Yeah no, I just played over 20 hours with SunHelm, and while I enjoy the food, drink and sleep aspect, the "cold" side felt so lackluster, I was standing outside in a storm for HOURS before i even got the "Cold: Chilly" effect and this was with already tuned cold settings It is good for the rest, but specifically for the cold side it is just lackluster. I recommend disabling the cold on SunHelm, and using frostfall alongside it
It's not that FNIS is gonna cause a lot of crashes, it's quite safe to use, but Nemesis is just better in almost every way, so anybody who is starting modding right now should be using that instead of FNIS.
@@Orshabaal it's factually not better than Nemesis in everyway, it's a garbage program that throws errors, gets blocked my antivirus and crashes constantly. There's a reason Pandora is about to replace Nemesis, it's because it's trash
I'm watching this knowing fully well that I'm installing Nolvus and will not be altering the modlist in any way out of fear of breaking the behemoths back. It seems like there are a lot of really good mods that have come out recently, and I wouldn't be surprised if Nolvus v6 were to use most of them

My game has been broken since an update last December. FNIS has been a staple mod in my load order for years. Maybe it is part of the reason ~85% of my mods are "redundant". Thanks for the video, I got some testing to do.
CGO is to this day, irreplaceable for first person gameplay, if you need the ability to shout/cast/swing while jumping/falling. Every other feature can(and should) be disabled. Skyrim is a first person action rpg, not a third person mall ninja sim. CGO even fixes the obnoxious vanilla game bug in which you can't shout if you press the shout button while staggered which locks you out of shouting for like 5-10 seconds.
I don't know if you noticed, OP, but the game, as vanilla, lets you switch from 1st to 3rd (to 1st) person camera. As in, both. Of course, being Bethesda, they put half-assed focus on the 3rd person camera gameplay, which the community very fiercely crafted alternatives. Modding is for everyone. Don't gatekeep.
Thanks for the vid - excellent points all around! Just a note about Book 'Em, it's not compatible with any mod that alters book weights or book names, like Better Skill and Quest Books Names SE. Also, the author is running game version 1.6.640 and has explicitly stated he will not update beyond that game version, nor will he support any issues with his mod on other game versions. Also, if anyone is interested in this mod, follow the link in this video. For some reason the mod won't show if you search on Nexus by its name.
Bad call with interesting npc. It doest not cause crashes. Please use crashlog and analyse it before randomly hypothesizing which mod is causing CTD. If you don't know what a crashlog is or know how to go about analysing it, do not make such claims of CTD
Yeah, Interesting NPCs is considered to be a very safe mod, the issue is it has a lot of compatibility issues with other popular mods that need patching. It's still worth it though.
Agreed. People hate on interesting NPCs but it's simply user error, they are either adding incompatibilities or failing to install all of the appropriate compatibility patches. As a newcomer to modding I had so many issues with conflicts and didn't know what LOOT, Tes5edit and wyrebash was 😂. Moral of the story, don't always trust the forums. I almost missed out on interesting NPCs coming back to this game after a years long break simply because of all the hate
I had an issue with a certain cutscene for a 3dnpc quest not activating. Turns out I was using a pet from the CC and its HUGE CHUNGUS COLLISION BOX was keeping an NPC from hitting its mark to start the scene (a vanilla engine issue). Ever get killed by trolls because your bone wolf decided the spot right behind your feet was a good time for a nap?
The big one I had to get rid of was weapon armor clothing and clutter fixes, whatever its called. Every modlist I read recommended it, but it does WAY more than its original intent of just doing useful things like getting rid of hooded robes and instead making them 2 pieces. It makes a TON of edits, and just conflicts with everything. If you are getting naked NPCs or messed up looking armors or weird little bugs you just cant understand this mod might be the culprit, it was for me. I got rid of it, and then I simply made my own patch to make NPCS only use hoodless robes (just made some edits to the outfits tab in SSE Edit) and my game worked much better for it. Populated Towns and Villages LITE with an NPC overhaul by Modpocalypse is giving me ZERO issues, I have not had a single city crash, I visited all cities in a test game and I'm many hours into my current game. To me it really adds something to have a few extra npcs (even named "merchant" or "laborer") into the city. I don't stare at them, they are just in the back ground but it just makes cities not feel dead. I personally am not a fan of Interesting NPCs because personally, I think they are boring, annoying, and over acting but I have to say, I have never crashed because of it. Had it for many playthroughs no issues. Also, old mods aren't ALWAYS bad. Sometimes a mod is just done. I have published mods for Fallout NV and Fallout 4. They are like 5 years without an update but as Todd would say: "They just work" They don't need an update. One gives all the robots in NV proper armor (some had zero armor in the fully patched game) and makes them tougher overall. A big mod of mine makes all the enmies in Fallout 4 harder but cuts the health bloat. It's just NPC/weapon/armor edits, and those don't change. Mod doesn't need an update. Same with a hand placed enemies mod I made. It just hand placed more enemies down. Doesn't need an update.
@@widowsiren8694 lmao, I specifically referring to the interesting NPCs mod. There is literally nothing game breaking about it. The info he gives is just bad.
VERY helpful and informative video! The section on animations is a godsend cuz there are so many different plugins for animation mods that it can be overwhelming and confusing. The only part I really disagree with is the suggestion to remove any added NPC mods - for me mods like these breathe so much new life into a playthrough that I feel they're worth some added instability, provided you're doing what you can everywhere else to maximize performance.
6:17 I don't care, I'm using it. It adds a lot of npcs but they're pretty spread out, I don't think I've ever found more than 3 added to one worldspace. Imho it's worth it.
Apart from the age comments (older player here. :P ), thank you for this list. Its been a couple of years since I've played. . .and i'm starting to feel the itch again, so will probably set things up again. Buuuut. . .any time I leave the game for awhile, it always means a massive pain to update my mods list. Sounds like it's time to dump all my mods and start building a fresh list. I use/have used a LOT of the mods you mention here, so it's good to have some updated recommendations. Any time I can simplify the mod list, keep the mods simple and lightweight - I like that - as long as I get the functionality I like. Open Cities is one I had to stop using ages ago, though. It truly was a compatibility nightmare. -.- Which sucked, but, yeah. Better to have a loading screen than all the troubles and lost NPCs falling below the city it caused. There are a few mods I can't really do without, but most of them can be dumped for newer, lighter weight versions.
Hey nothing but respect for older gamers! Not easy to make time to play Especially when it comes to modding. Sometimes it feels more draining than a 9 to 5, but I hope the video helps a little bit!
Thanks for the vid Nariva! Also what's that climbing mod at 1:00?! I love having extra movement. The only other semi-climbing mod I've found was evg animated traversal where some ledges were climbable
I think you should probably direct pp into Pandora rather than nemesis, given the whole goal of this video. Nemesis is outdated and semi abandoned (also it never fully replaced FNIS). Fore announced his retirement early 2020, and nemesis received last update mid 2020, both have been abandoned for pretty much an equal amount of time. Pandora on the other hand, is still being developed, fully replaced both mod and fully backward compatible, and run much faster. There is no reason not to switch over, especially given how the other 2 is unlikely to get any new update. It’s like going from DAR to OAR, or CBP to CBPC, or HDT SMP to Faster HDT SMP….It’s a no brainer.
Nariva there is a lite version to capital whiterun and the mod author who made it made a lite version for capital windhelm and cotn falkreath, you should check them out
Great video, very helpful. In most cases the mods that cause the most problems are those that have comments and/or bug section disabled. So this video is very useful
I actually love your "hipocrysy", because even if a mod is unstable, not supported anymore, incompatible with other mods, etc. but is a good one for one reason or another (or you think can be fun for someone) and you use it, you tell us right away. "Hey, this isn't the best choice, however, I like it because it brings X, Y, Z into the game which I love", and not just bash it or strtaight-up say it's shit/not worth even trying/etc. Nice!
Hey, is Nemesis able to support animal skeleton or animation now? I really wanted the wing animation to fly, But I couldn't cuz they say Nemesis doesnt support animal skeleton or animation back then
I use both fnis and nemsis. I use fnis for creature an wing animations and then let nemesis overwrite the people animations. Ive used the two together without issue for years.
Idk, my modlist has 1,453 active plugins and Northern Roads isn't an issue. I make sure to update the patches when they're available and just make sure you keep NR at the bottom of your load order
9:54 Arthmoor now requires people to go to his own website similar to nexus mods where all of his mods get updates, he has since purged them from the nexus and is super salty and/or has a superiority complex.
Hunterborn would be great except for the fact that occasionally I skin a rabbit and it tells me it's a fox, or I butcher a spider and it gives me a wolf pelt. Gotta use the taxonomy spell on everything to make sure (or just flag everything as spider for the really nice poisons, or as troll for the healing potion blood). The trinity of original survival mods Hunterborn, RND, and Frostfall were ported before SKSE was ported and then immediately abandoned, so they're only barely functioning on a basic level.
Reinstalling Skyrim and applying my many, many, MANY mods. Can't forget how incredibly crashy and buggy mods were for me during the Anniversary Edition patch period. So I appreciate this.
Thanks a lot for making such an easy way to keep up us update, i love modding skyrim but it's one of those games that eventually i just stop playing and never come back again and when i do, i have such a bad time tryin' to figure out separating the essential new mods and dependencies, i hope you keep doing these in the future, thanks once again!
I've modded and restarted the game like 4 times and now I am on the 5th try. It's literally hell when you start from 0 and have to install every essential things first, and it's hard to remember everything you need, sometimes you forget important mods lol.
First tip of the video : uninstall mods during a playthrough. Worst advice possible. Next step, choosing FNIS over Nemesis. Ok, even the best jokes have to end.
I don't know why in the world you would suggest Nemesis over FNIS. Nemesis is just as abandoned and unsupported as FNIS is, except that it was developed for a shorter amount of time and happened to be done more recently than FNIS. But FNIS integrates well with Vortex and can do creature animations, where Nemesis can't.
FNIS does not support most of new animation mods while Nemesis support them out of the box without needing author work to be included in the patch list, the only reason people using FNIS are for beastiality mods lol
When I was following you through the cursed mod list, I was like "check", "yeah totally", "I agree". Then you started mentioning all the NPC mods I added to my modified Vagabond modlist (4200+ mods) and I 'm now like "CTD it is". I play in VR and for me it's all about immersion. There is nothing to immerse in if nobody is around, if you know what I mean. I 've not only all the NPC mods you mentioned but also have "Immersive citizens" in my modlist. Check mate.
Nemesis is out of date. Use pandora instead. Nemesis has an animation limit of 20000 animations. Any more than the that and it will fail to generate. Pandora doesn't have this limition. Currently running over 40k animations with 0 issue. Pandora also supports creatures is bsckwards compatible with nemesis
Do you use every single animation mod available on nexus to achieve 40k? I installed LoreRim and it has like 6500 - 7000 animations loading in OAR. Can you share what kind of mods you use?
Was expecting "mods you shouldn't use" with a nudge nudge and a wink wink that you should actually secretly go and use them. 😉 I love the idea 3DNPC is going for, but the style clash between it and skyrim is just too extreme, a game that is best likened to the comforting appeal of junk food. I find every time I use that mod, I end up inspecting every NPC via the console to ensure I don't speak to any of them by accident...
I wish Drelas could be a standalone character. Interesting NPCs Drelas seems like a pretty chill dude, but some of the voice acting of other characters is... low quality. Not that it's bad voice acting. It's bad microphones.
This is a pretty good video and most of the points boil down to: your old mods are obsolete install these new mods that do the same thing buy WAY BETTER. I genuinely do not know how I played the game before True Directional Movement was added and improved camera SE was finally finished after like 4+years of development. TDM is one of those mods that seems like it does something so simple but it truly did evolve the game, if people didn’t suffer with the awful awful AWFUL old 3rd person camera and animation mods they will never appreciate the absolute marvel of modern modding TDM is.
I would have preferred a video title saying "show case of great mods" rather than just trying to denigrate other mods that still work without problems today. A good finished mod does not need to be fixed like many of those that are presented today with bug fixes everywhere and patches needed for 50% of other mods.
@@RonJeremy514 that is what i hope for, as the current alpha build, there are still plenty of FNIS mod pandora doesnt support... really cant wait for pandora to be complete, so we can ditch nemesis and fnis nonsense =D
Another reason to use Reshade instead of an ENB is that DLSS doesn't work with ENB, reshade does. Also you need to turn of DOF and AA for upscaling, because they happen BEFORE the upscaling and the image becomes really blurry. Reshade on the other hand applies DOF and AA AFTER the upscaling so they work nicely together.
FNIS has NOT been replaced. Nemesis can't handle Creature Behaviors and also its abandoned too! There is a Pandora that is in Alpha/Beta right now, which will replace both. But right now you still need FNIS if you want creature Behaviors. And SunHelm is complete trash compared to Frostfall, I tried it one playthrough and went straight back to Frostfall. And MCO is not a fucking replacement, unless you are a fucking weirdo that plays in 3rd Person. MCO does not do anything for First Person!
I got scared when I opened the video, read the description (before watching it) and saw almost all my mods listed there, then I saw the video and those were not the mods to remove but the alternatives to replaces and felt relieved! My modlist looks good then, just a few ones to change.
My problem with simple dual sheath is that some left positioned weapons like axes or swords with a strap instead of a scabbard will flip around 180 degrees, where a patch is provided on the page, but they have the axe straps pointing away from your character’s body. Supposedly there is a synthesis patcher to fix that, but I couldn’t get it to work, and IED isn’t exactly user friendly with its interface on how to adjust what is shown and their positions. I still use AllGUD because it can work well if done right, and I don’t have to have a degree in programming to understand it’s positioning interface
After modding and deleting and modding again times three, I've realized ENB is too much trouble for me, in all Bethesda games besides F4. I learn a lot by making mistakes and that seems to be the case when Nexus is flooded with outdated mods. I watched this and actually already use nemesis, precision, and OAR. I felt a lot better after watching
A lot of this is nonsense. There's nothing wrong with Interesting NPCs. Community Shaders is not a viable replacement for ENB if you care about visuals. Same goes for a lot of these other mods.
agree with northern roads. GORGEOUS MOD. we're talking next gen+ amazing there, but what a clusterf*ck to install it. kept it for a week, then removed it because of mesh seams. stay away from northern roads but keep an eye on it. it may become the new standard and supplant blended roads as a new standard soon. also you forgot to mention ELFX with its 200 patches scattered all across the nexus, half of them being redundant. use Lux instead.
Dude! With this list you just saved me hell of a lot fps. I am currently downloadind skyrim and coming back to it but i am gonna play it and mod it on linux and it's gonna be hell of a ride.
Finally, replacement mod for 'No Snow Under Roof'. It need a lot of patches. Thanks for the video, we need more videos like this, especially for FPS. I need some creature mods to replace Immersive Creatures.
Ok so I got back into Skyrim modding (after being away for almost a decade, last time I played Skyrim was in like 2014, even before SSE came out), and even though I was pretty careful about which mods to download, I still got a bunch of these, so thanks for the guide, really goes to show that you can't just blindly trust the Top Files on Nexus.
I fell in that trap with New Vegas recently Some of the mods in the video are my opinion, such as MCO and DMCO And a lot of people expressed their disagreement about Interesting NPCs so keep that in mind
Weather and adding as many people I can talk to will always be a priority. My pc can blow for all I care. LOL. Personally Interesting NPC's will always be apart of my game but I can understand leaving it out especially if you've played through it before. It's never been an issue for me but I try to keep my pc beefy. I may finally part ways with Frostfall. Sunhelm has been on my list of must tries. So far The Notice board works with Missivies etc quite well so far. I like it. Northern Roads is Godly. It's beautiful but I had a ton of issues with seams and the like and spent hours trying all the different solutions I could find. Went back to Blended Roads. I'll try it sometime on a lighter mod list. My current mod list is bursting at the seams. 🤪 Been working on it for over a year and haven't even played just tested while I wait for some quest mods to finish - looking at you Gelnmoril.
Honestly I feel ya, I'm done with budget computers and consoles. Been there done that. Now that I have the cash flow I'm gonna keep my current computer upgraded and eventually build a whole new one with as many top of the line parts as possible. Gonna shoot for upgrades every 5-6 years if necessary on my current one, until I can justify just dropping like 5-6k on my dream do-everything computer. Built my current PC in 2022 for around 2k, and so far it's not needed any major upgrades. Money well spent, I think. NPC mods and AI overhauls make the game feel far more alive and immersive. I don't know why in the hell Bethesda insists on sticking with a more than 20 year old game engine (NetImmerse became Gamebryo which was used as a basis for Creation Engine which became Creation 64-bit which became Creation Engine 2) that is held together with duct tape and prayers and is incapable of running more than 4 NPCs within twenty square miles without stuttering and crashing, but they do.
I agree with 80% of this video but: 1. Interesting NPCs only adds 1 or 2 NPCs to each city. That absolutely does not cause crashes. If it does cause crashes, it's due to some other problem with the mod. For example, some NPC mods add mounted NPCs who cause a 100% CTD whenever they try to go through a load door due to a vanilla bug. On SSE with the proper engine fixes, I can spawn 740 NPCs on me and not crash. 2. Frostfall isn't obsolete. Just overwrite with latest version of papyrusutil.

*To clarify - This video is my opinion.*
The mods in the video are not bad and will most likely not break your game.
Dogshit opinion. Never cook again
could you just upload your modlist as a collection for us?
Nemesis does have creature support it’s just another mod
It only PC
I just got a new laptop, but it can't run Skyrim very well. Any suggestions for the Xbox?
You should always use whatever version of the game is best for the load order you are trying to create so luckily it is very easy to download specific game versions and prevent updates using steam console and there are plenty of ways to find older versions of The Unofficial patch it is important for the bug fixes it provides through archived links that bypass the authors attempts to hide them
Yeah i remember when a new ae version came out and i decided to roll back. I had to find the ussep achive from a reddit post.
Very interesting... Dramaaaa 👀

No, no, the other Survival mods don't break anything
But the complex mechanics would be a turn off for new players who might see those being the most popular of the category

This is very rare kind of video. Almost no one has compiled a good list of outdated mods and alternatives. Thank you for this video!
Seriously. It's soooo amazing.

Would be nice to know which script mods to avoid, because I have a few and my game freezes a lot.
@@Charlie-vp5tn Hard to say without actually seeing the list (and can't just ask for one since YT doesn't have DMs), BUT:
Any mod that modifies NPC behavior or adds new NPCs will have scripts.
This is great for people getting into modding, the old stuff will still have the endorsement numbers just because of the length of time its been out
yeah dont go by endorsements, go for the category and sort by release from recent to stoneages then you'll find the newer and often better or at least lighter ones or atleast patches or patches for the old stuff, navigating the site more efficiently and smarter often helps to find what you need, want and didnt even knew you wanted till you found it.^^

In this day and age of skyrim modding you just need to try avoiding mixing systems that accomplish the same thing, for example if your installing animation mods you have to pick FNIS or nemesis. You can technically get them working together but it's not a good idea so you should pick old and a larger selection or new and a smaller collection.

It's a really good mod, but requires lot of time and patching for large load orders.
don't mind it buddy, I for example am a Lux and JK Skyrim user and enjoyer even tho both mods require tons of patches if you want to use it with other mods.
I like the mod when I have less than 100 mods installed, wish it played well with JK's Skyrim and Cathedral

Please stop calling me old
6:17 I don't care, I'm using it. It adds a lot of npcs but they're pretty spread out, I don't think I've ever found more than 3 added to one worldspace. Imho it's worth it.

It appears that I am an OBIS and 3DNPC user ^^
But no issues to be honest, just a lot of patching ( like really).
If you can deal with the patching, more power to you! I also use some mods I don't recommend from this list lol
3DNPC is just too good for immersion to avoid it
Apart from the age comments (older player here.

As far as I know Nemesis is being rewritten and the author is working with the Pandora author too
Nariva there is a lite version to capital whiterun and the mod author who made it made a lite version for capital windhelm and cotn falkreath, you should check them out

Funny that using FNIS doesn't cause any crash whatsoever with 500+ other mods installed. So yeah...maybe your setup is the problem and not the mod.

and when i do, i have such a bad time tryin' to figure out separating the essential new mods and dependencies, i hope you keep doing these in the future, thanks once again!
Glad I can help! Coming back to modding can be very daunting!!
I've modded and restarted the game like 4 times and now I am on the 5th try. It's literally hell when you start from 0 and have to install every essential things first, and it's hard to remember everything you need, sometimes you forget important mods lol.
Another thing you could have mentioned was "reshade Helper" mod which makes it so reshade doesn't effect ui. Including depth of field options.
The only one I won’t give up is interesting npcs
Perfectly ok, its one of the most used mods and it has patches for almost everything. Never got any CTDs from them
If it works well and you don'thave incompatibility issues, keep it!
@@NarivaTV if we don't know about the incompatibilities you should tell us about them since they are mods we've never had good enough to perfer
SunHelm My favorite mod pack for survival. adjustable needs and everything.
First tip of the video : uninstall mods during a playthrough.
Worst advice possible.
Next step, choosing FNIS over Nemesis.
Ok, even the best jokes have to end.
The second wasn't recommended abd you can uninstall mods midway through a save but some mods you shouldn't
"...probably at least 47 years old." In the words of Grandpa Simpson: "It'll happen to yooouuuu..."
Check mate.
I still suggest you try them and see if they work for yourself! You might get lucky :)
That MJ sneak advert you sneaked in about not doing drugs is hilarious 😂 😂 😂 😂
Nemesis is out of date. Use pandora instead. Nemesis has an animation limit of 20000 animations. Any more than the that and it will fail to generate. Pandora doesn't have this limition. Currently running over 40k animations with 0 issue. Pandora also supports creatures is bsckwards compatible with nemesis
Do you use every single animation mod available on nexus to achieve 40k? I installed LoreRim and it has like 6500 - 7000 animations loading in OAR. Can you share what kind of mods you use?
If you use Community Shader, don't use Splashes of Storms! Use Wetness Effect instead!
Was expecting "mods you shouldn't use" with a nudge nudge and a wink wink that you should actually secretly go and use them. 😉
I love the idea 3DNPC is going for, but the style clash between it and skyrim is just too extreme, a game that is best likened to the comforting appeal of junk food.
Dope vid dude! It will be of great help for my next playthrough :)
Glad I could help!
I would have preferred a video title saying "show case of great mods" rather than just trying to denigrate other mods that still work without problems today.
A good finished mod does not need to be fixed like many of those that are presented today with bug fixes everywhere and patches needed for 50% of other mods.
"nemesis has completely replace FNIS"
hahaha... nice joke..
Pandora* has completely replaced FNIS and Nemesis.
Reshade on the other hand applies DOF and AA AFTER the upscaling so they work nicely together.
me:so i use v1.5.97 of the game downgraded,so this video is litteraly useless lol
What is buggy about simply knock? I use that mod and haven't noticed any problems with it.
I fell in that trap with New Vegas recently
Some of the mods in the video are my opinion, such as MCO and DMCO
And a lot of people expressed their disagreement about Interesting NPCs so keep that in mind
I agree with 80% of this video but:
