  • This week, we're joined by our friend Yozo Otsuki, founder of Kurasu and Kigu, in their roastery space in Kyoto.
We have been fans of Kurasu for several years, and in fact several of the brewers that we have featured on this channel were sourced directly from Kurasu in Japan.
In this video, Patrik and Yozo discuss the formation of Kurasu, the history and culture of Japanese coffee brewing as well as taking a closer look at 5 different Japanese coffee brewers you may not have seen before.
Thank you to our friends at Kurasu for their warm welcome, contribution to the content and for sharing their space with us. If you would like to see what Kurasu/Kigu are offering, you can find links to their web-stores below: kurasu.kyoto/ kigu.coffee/

Yozo, it was such a pleasure to see the video. I immediately went and purchased the copper/wire brewer. I work in marketing, and the follow up email introductions to the company are very well conceived and I remain so impressed with what you all are building. Keep up the good work and best wishes for health, happiness and continued success to the entire Kurasu family.

I found your comment on batch brew interesting. I think as a blanket statement- most cafes using moccamasyers make either very under or over extracted coffee. But, having been in the industry for a few years, I have found in Australia that cafes who roast their own coffee have a better understanding of the beans which translate to a tasty batch.
Again, I agree with the statement, but I myself am found drinking batchy on a daily basis due to a good source of said coffee being readily available to me

Thanks for this. Fascinating stuff. I’m awaiting arrival of the copper wire/mesh brewer from Kurasu. From all appearances, it looks to be a work of art and I feel privileged and proud to be able to own one. Interesting observation about the batch brewers. I’ve yet to find a pour over/pour-over recipe/technique whose coffee I like more than my Bonavita Connoisseur (pre-infusion, broad water dispersal through the shower head, temperature stable, thermal carafe). My favorite by far has been the Hario Switch, though this new brewer and the April brewers I have on order may change my mind. At least I’m keeping it open! Thank you, as always, for all you do.

Kurasu is my favorite coffee retailer for brewing gear. DHL shipment from Kyoto to Texas in the United States, within 2 days.
Just received my Origami Small, resin Origami dripper holder, V60 tabbed 40 pk boxes, and kalita wave filters.
Looking forward to brewing with the Origami, and I love being a repeat customer of Kurasu.

I would take issue with your thought that the brewers are “quirky.”
It’s just another example of Japanese aesthetics which are off the charts being applied in this case to brewers as art. Not weird… but beautiful!

Thanks I tried this recipe and it is excellent thank you! What would the recipe be if you were brewing in Kalita 185 (ceramic bit not wave) for two people?

I was wondering if you were still planning on doing videos for the brewing equipment you picked up from Kurasu?

@@coffeewithapril I have watched a lot of Aprils videos and I do appreciate the shared knowledge. I recently bought the Torch because of this video and it makes a tasty cup!
