I live in this marvelous city. For about a year I've been obsessed with this field of research and when I'm near or in downtown I'm in complete awe of how many old world structures the city still has. The adjacent neighborhoods around Downtown like Golden hill and Sherman are covered in old world Victorian style homes. Its like going through a time machine. Love your videos and extra happy for the indepth look at San Diego!

On the intersection of Washington and Park Blvd., about 100 ft to the northwest, used to stand a massive, flawlessly built Greek Revival structure known as the San Diego Normal School; absolutely monumental and a true tribute to the classical style. 6th and B street had an Orpheum theater that looked like it was lifted from Madrid. A lot of really beautiful structures used to stand in places you wouldn’t know unless you research it.

I love it when the historians start with the, "This building is clearly from the Neoclassical Gothic Revival Richardsononian GrecoMoroccan ChateauBeaux Movement of December 1883. It has all the hallmarks of this completely new style!" Great video. Loved that laugh out loud opener too!

Hey! That's my town! Thank you! 1:46 that's the Keating building with THE TOP ON! 3:59 That building replaced the other building that was a part of the Panama Expo... this one built in the 20s, and they're always redoing the sculpting... much of the original sculptures have been removed and are on display in one of the courtyards... They recast and replaced most of this, if not all. Many fires in Balboa Park that destroyed buildings, and they replaced them... some were demolished and replaced with modern buildings. 5:25 That should be Coronado, and possibly the Hotel Del Coronado?? 5:31 stones are on The Keating Building... that Horton Grand Hotel in the shot on the left side was taken apart brick by brick and reconstructed in a different location in the 1980s to make way for the Horton Plaza Shopping Mall. 6:53 You'll see a difference in the older pic you have and the newer ones... major remodel on the bottom ground floor. 7:43 the other one is on the corner of 5th & University Ave. 9:00 California Theatre... demo by neglect...owner wanted to demo it, and it's been a battle between it being historic and allowing the owner to get away with letting it get to this current state... recently they were supposed to demo it and rebuild the bottom portion facade and jet a condo tower out of it... that fell through... and we're back to letting it sit and rot some more. 9:28 That's the Home Economy Building in Balboa Park Plaze de Panama, and that was one of two buildings in the plaza to be demoed and replace by a modernist building in 1964. 9:36 Broadway Pier building demolished in the 70s... and demolished again and we have something super new now. 10:04 Hotel San Diego IMPLODED in 2007. 10:33 The California building said to be one of 3 buildings for the Expo that were not built to be "temporary". Some of the "temporary" buildings in Balboa Park were demolished and rebuilt. I think 3 buildings along the main strip (Prado). 12:46 that photo in the wikipedia story is one of two buildings that burned down in about 1977 or so, and was rebuilt (the other was the Old Globe Theatre). I think the "expo" narratives are all pretty bogus, however, I have a feeling that for San Diego, what we read is pretty true... I've seen the temporary buildings up close as they were deteriorating... not built to last, except those more permanent structures. 13:06 San Diego High School, "the grey castle", now THAT'S an old world building! 13:54 Spreckels Organ Pavilion, another one of the 3 permanent structures built for the Panama Expo, 1915... Concerts every Sunday today. 14:08 Cabrillo Bridge too, built to last... known as "Suicide Bridge"... just today a guy jumped off of it and didn't make it :( 14:19 St Joseph's Hospital, was at the 600 block of University Ave. The Surgery Annex on the other corner to the right of this building still exists and was moved across the street an was in a dilapidated state for years until Better Buzz took it over and restored it...a fabulous place! 14:27 Immediate left building "Science of Man" building, demoed in 1964, and replaced with a modern 'thing' in 1964... "sculpture garden". 14:30 building on the right, "Indian Arts" Building, one of those that was demolished in more recent times and replaced... a pretty close copy to the original. 14:53 YMCA... I actually stayed there in about 2000. A roach infested nightmare! A hotel has now taken it over, and it's pretty nice. 15:00 The Normal School... should ave never been demoed. Made it to the 50s. 15:12 Hotel Churchill had a major restoration and is beautiful low income housing! 15:23 The NEW Santa Depot built to replace the old 1800's one... The Portico was removed in the 50s :( But for the most part, still there. 15:34 El Cortez hotel replace a Victorian Mansion. 16:25 Horton Plaza Park Irving Gill Fountain, this is downtown in front of US Grant Hotel. 17:33 Carnegie Library, torn down for a new, larger library...17:38 Natural History Museum (Balboa Park). This building replaced the large auditorium that burned down ironically the night they had a fireman's ball. 18:02 Balboa Navel Hospital, only one main building still stands today, as well as the chapel. 18:10 Building far left, housed the aerospace museum in the 70s that burned down (arson) and was replaced. I think too, the far right was replaced too. Building on the immediate right (Home Economy), demoed in 1964 and has a modernist building (Timken Museum of Art). 18:19 It's been remodeled extensively, has a more Spanish look now...there's another postcard of it showing that. 20:43 Was rebuilt after fire, and it's poured plaster/concrete of some kind, cast and then installed... 20:54 San Diego Knock off! LOL 21:08 Botanical Building in Balboa Park, currently being restored... in the 60s it got altered, then became run down and now they are doing it right... all the bones are off revealing a steel frame which they are sandblasting and treating, and now rebuilding the wood framing parts. 22:15 Replace the Horton House. 22:31 That 2nd story "patio" called "Palm Court" has since been enclosed and is a 2nd ballroom. 25:00 US Grant built there where the Horton House was. 25:25 I think they look like the same buildings, for sure! 27:04 those upper sections rebuilt after being removed for many years. 27:18 used as TV Station, CBS 8 in the 50s through the 70s. 28:16 they look metal to me. 29:32 should have never been demolished :\ 30:24 Pickwick Hotel, still operates as a hotel "Sophia" it's name... they removed the back Greyhound bus terminal on the north side. 30:57 The courtyard of this building is where the old statue / sculpture artifacts are displayed. 33:38 this is the remodel of that brick church in the earlier postcard you shared (18:19) . 35:21 Looks like architecture to me! 35:49 THAT is the Telephone building. 39:23 Yes, SF! 39:33 THAT is the original building that faced the Plaza de Panama in the San Diego Panama Expo... You opened this video with the building that replace this building. 39:50 - 40:08 that's SF! 40:10 San Diego

I’ll never forget my wife driving over the concrete barrier halfway up to the top of Coronado Bridge….I told her to exercise extra caution but she is bananas with the reckless speeding! It was 80-100 foot falling into the water and I screamed murder all the way down. The Coast Guard and the Seabees sent us a bill after extracting our Chevy truck onto a barge from the channel below….she went to the hospital with a sprained index finger. That was the last time I ever took a ride in a vehicle with HER behind the wheel. Otherwise, San Diego is definitely Old World like S.F.

They had many adjoining rooms and our floor was empty (1990) so we thought at first they were connected bc the doors were unlocked on the 4th floor.

It’s plaster with the the heavily-detailed and/or structural components being made of poured concrete. One can very easily kick a hole through the walls of almost all the extant exposition buildings in balboa park. After winter rains, there are parts that get soft to the touch.

Hello, cool video. Just fyi, @ 5:27 you say “whatever we have here” - that is the famous Hotel Del Coronado, seen on Coronado Island, from across San Diego bay. Very famous place and was like a megalith compared to the surrounding buildings. The pinnacle of Victorian high society. Had bathhouses, a monkey house, seal pond, one of the first interior fire sprinkler systems and much much more. Lots of history there.

The buildings in Balboa Park were supposedly rebuilt in the 1960’s. That’s a complete lie. I have lived here since 1959 and the buildings have never been rebuilt. They remain untouched for the most part and the ornamentation is unchanged from the original 1915 photos. In one of the beginning photos of this video where it shows three figures ensconced in a shell shaped alcove in the front of the building - those three figures of “explorers” were clearly added in afterwards, as the details of those three figures are so much more primitive than the decoration surrounding it.
I live above Sunset Cliffs and 2/3 of the Sunset Cliffs peninsula is dedicated to the Navy and they definitely don’t want people snooping around there too much. The end of the cliffs has many square blocks of some kind of straight and parallel stone structure that is definitely not natural. I think whatever happened at the end of the cliffs (and believe me, there are parts of the cliffs that look like they have been bombed, leaving huge gaping holes) is possibly related to one of the Coronado islands just 12 miles south of San Diego that looks like it was literally cleaved in half.

Lived in san diego past 13 years.. interesting how nearly No one realizes how much of the city was founded around the worlds fair. The permanent bridge still up, electric trolley still runs, san diego zoo / wild animal park created from animals brought in for the fair. We still have wild peacocks from the fair times. Theodore roosevelt demanded that the building be preserved, when the original plan like other worlds fairs was some temporary and some permanent buildings. Young or old, nobody who lives here knows. The balboa park area is a bit creepy to be honest. Same with Old town.. lots of folks were hung in a place that still exists.. its a weird town. Not to mention we also have some mormon castles and small but strong community of LDS in positions of power. Lots of chrony contracts for building and permits to this day. Wild west still, just less public 🔫💀

We like it when people hate us. Popular bumper sticker in the 80's seen on the back of many Native San Diegan's cars including mine said "Welcome to San Diego. Now go home!" We locals know how lucky we are so we dont give a damn what anyone else thinks. I just think it's funny because most negativity is coming from people who are jealous. That just makes me smile.😊

Interesting to see all the old photos and film that has been shared by people. My thoughts are that we never did have the technology on how to build those buildings /castles. I think the old world buildings where from the time the fallen angels had left their first heavenly estate and came down to earth. They had the technology and the abilities that we are looking at in awe today. Just the mere statues alone that shows all the exquisite, delicate features and how the clothing and veils seem to flow on or around them. So much of history has been hidden from us. Of course just my thoughts ideas that being said I hope we keep asking questions and searching for the truth. Our Heavenly Father will let it all be known in due time.

Just home from the honeymoon, here I come!
lol right off the bat @0:07 I'm sorry what?
    edits while I watch:
@1:24 Good eye. It becomes like spotting Waldo, locating the "Hang on just a second" buildings and other clues of the old world.
@4:14 I'm curious what that mess of wires is in the upper left quadrant here. Lots of tech in this image, and I'm just now seeing flagpoles as a big piece of this puzzle we're putting together ...
@5:30 It's really illuminating once you start to identify the different types of building materials used through different waves of occupation. From yuge stones to common red bricks to thinner Roman bricks, it's just such a world unto itself. I love seeing the different construction materials in your surveys.
@5:47 "But we have construction photos!" Like, our standards of evidence are higher than your etched glass plate negatives, man.gif
@11:22 Does anyone offer up potential differences in construction between all these "temporary" buildings they threw together and the ones that have lasted centuries? I would think not, but surely someone's tried.
@18:46 Aw yiss, is that a Datsun Z I spy??? Also the SEXCITING MOVIES marquis oh my.
@22:10 Any idea of all the tech up on the roof here? Those same wires as back at 4:14 ... yup, it's the Grant Hotel. Super curious about all that rooftop adornment ...
@25:22 My vote is yes, that's the same building. Oof, so much has been destroyed.
@27:18 There was quite a century-long craze of deep excavation and building into the hillsides, wasn't there?
@32:01 Man I got chills hearing you describe them harnessing our energetics. I think you're definitely onto something there, and think about how much money and control of our culture and society hinge on professional sports. Like fanatic worship of false idols every single day.
