I've noticed that handsome men are often influenced by horrible people. Handsome men are no different than beautiful women in the sense that they can get away with anything.
The obvious moral of the story is be careful of the company you keep and although one can be beautiful they can still be rotten to the core. I just think it's so crazy that Henry guided Dorian down this debaucherous path and then with the same breath criticizes him for it. He is more than likely jealous but this is why you have to be careful about choosing your friends. Some people don't always have your best interest at heart.

I think its because movies have less time to convey things so making him very innocent at the start contrasts how dark he becomes so by the end someone who's only seen the movie can understand his choice and remorse even though they have only viewed a few glimpses into his life. I haven't seen the movie but that would be my guess

When he announced he was willing to give up his soul to the devil in exchange for a never ending youth, the picture captured his soul to serve as a sort of supernatural contract and medium. It serves as a one to one representation of Dorian's character. Character, not body. Though he remains unaging, his actions throughout his life rottened his soul gradually. When he destroyed the painting, his soul returned to his body causing his body to become just as rotten as it should've been with his actions if the deal with devil were never made but his actions stayed the same. It's the consequences of his actions in physical form since he cared so much about his youth. However, the painting returns to being the same before the deal in the end which most likely signifies Dorian accepting the consequences and thus redemption. Though this can also mean that Dorian is still alive. Possibilities could be that destroying the painting freed his soul back into his body and he now lives as his rotten self forever to remember his actions and let the world know allowing the painting to free itself from being used as the medium for soul capture and returning to normal, or more likely that Dorian died in the fire in acceptance of his fate and redeemed his soul with the painting forever capturing that moment of redemption and returning to normal. Imo, the latter is more likely as the painting clearly is supernatural as it was not destroyed in the fire. The painting in the end can also just be representation of the devil having won and serves as its own personal medium hence immunity to flame and such.

Once you realise that Sibyl in this novel was probably named after Sibylla from Greek mythology, it becomes very interesting. Sibylla was cursed by Apollo to live for as many years as the number of sand grains in her hand. She did live for several years but her body continued to age to the point where every part of her body rotted. Quite ironic to Dorian's case where his portrait is the one rotting and not his body.
I always saw Dorian's painting decaying as the results of the plethora of STDs he should have caught from all this debauchery + normal ageing of course.
If it was that easy not many would hang around them. The "Henrys" of the world don't advertise. It's a subtle effect and you never realize how much damage has happened until it's too late.

He did love Sybil passionately for a couple of days, and when Henry and Dorian went to see her perform, he realized how ordinary she was. I will be honest, I read it quite a long time ago, but I remember Basil confessing his love to Dorian as well. He did kill him, but he got rid of the body with a help of his ex friend and they burnt the body in the house. And I do not remember Henry having a daughter nor Dorian being abused at a young age. Maybe I need to refresh my memories, these are the changes that caught my attention in the movie recap. It was an experience to read the book. The visuals of it are beautiful as well.

I do consider Dorian to be worse than Henry. While Henry is bad for introducing Dorian to his hedonistic lifestyle and ideologies, Dorian quickly embraced them and dismissed all his other friends and their advices for Henry. Dorian also said he would sell his soul without a second thought something that even made Henry a bit concerned. That is a nice interpretation about movie Dorian and movie Henry. Henry may have encouraged Dorian to this life of debauchery but the murder part is all on Dorian. Some toxic friends can give you very bad advices indeed, but in the end you're the only one chosing to follow those advices or not.

You know seeing this origin really explains Dorian Grey’s betrayal in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I know people don’t like that movie but I greatly enjoy it. Dorian was the only character I didn’t know much about.
The original magazine version and novel used to have LGBTQ themes and alluded to it. Basil was originally in love with Dorian and worshiped him as a muse. Wilde had to republish it, and even had the original version used as evidence against him at his trial before he was sentenced guilty for “gross indecency” or pretty much for being gay/bisexual. It was a reflection of his own relationship with Alfred Douglas, whose father called for the trial out of revenge of him being in a relationship with his son.
He considered the characters of Basil, Henry, and Dorian to be different versions of himself (who he is, who he wants to be, and who people see him as) and that been my favorite aspect of the story

It more so represents Dorian's redemption in killing himself for his past sins. The more he did wrong and twisted himself the more twisted the painting became. Once Dorian dies and actually regrets his twisted actions and sins the painting depicts him as handsome and innocent again

He's dead. By destroying the Portrait he simply concluded his contract with the Devil, got whatever was left of his soul back, died and likely went to Hell to pay his end of the bargain. Notice how despite the other guy setting it on the fire the portrait didn't really get destroyed until Dorian himself broke it.

Lord Henry is a villain, but not an excuse for Dorian 's behavior. No one can make you do or think anything, if you don' t allow it in your mind. Dorian and only Dorian is fully responsible for everything he did. If he didn't want to be this way, he could have expressed disagreement with lord Henry's words, or he could have simply not paid attention to them, or he could have stopped communicating with him. There are many options.

What a odd and romantic story. Obviously things got out of control and he turned into a monster, but before that, he was in a loving relationship and everything was good. Even though he did some bad things, he got his humanity back when he met Emily, who gave him a second chance at love. Had he settled down with her, he could have atoned for his previous bad decisions.

I need to re-read my copy of this book. I think one thing anyone can take away from it is to "know yourself and who you came in with" (ya know that song Free Fall about someone talking to the Devil and bringing up the toxicity in their Iives, mostly their relationships with other people). If you're around toxic people like Dorian then you're bound to be drawn into their b.s. and tainted. They're also the first people to turn around and call you out (after they tainted you and twisted you into a monster like them).
The way his photo aka portrait was decaying shows his spirit becoming unbalanced while his outward appearance stayed the same dying on the inside while alive on the outside all the things done to his body, mind, heart and spirit shows in the painting until he rights his wrongs due bringing back balance again after righting all of his wrongs. When he lost his lost that’s when the curse consumed him until he restored himself and the painting
Dorian Gray was a character in Sean Connery's last movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which IMO was actually a pretty awesome movie but sadly got review bombed probably because most audience members just dont tend to like the movies that are actually some of the best.
I don't think it was "review bombed". It just honestly wasn't that good of a movie compared to the source material it was based off of. This was the source of everyone's frustration with it. I was one of the people genuinely excited for that film back when it was originally released, but left feeling incredibly let down. I hope they remake it one day with a better story/plot.

If it was that easy not many would hang around them. The "Henrys" of the world don't advertise. It's a subtle effect and you never realize how much damage has happened until it's too late.

@@Souchi-ito Exactly. In the end, Henry did not live according to his own advice. He had a beautiful daughter and accepted life's realities. He had some crazy ideas before he had kids, but after he recognized what really is important in life. His fault is for saying that stupid stuff to Dorian, but Dorian was still in adult in charge of his own life.
A lot of the details were changed in the movie, but it's still a nice one. The book is a classic, the adaptation has great visuals.

Well, the biggest change was the very intimate relationship between Dorian and the female characters. He did love Sybil passionately for a couple of days, and when Henry and Dorian went to see her perform, he realized how ordinary she was. I will be honest, I read it quite a long time ago, but I remember Basil confessing his love to Dorian as well. He did kill him, but he got rid of the body with a help of his ex friend and they burnt the body in the house. And I do not remember Henry having a daughter nor Dorian being abused at a young age. Maybe I need to refresh my memories, these are the changes that caught my attention in the movie recap.
It was an experience to read the book. The visuals of it are beautiful as well.

I do consider Dorian to be worse than Henry. While Henry is bad for introducing Dorian to his hedonistic lifestyle and ideologies, Dorian quickly embraced them and dismissed all his other friends and their advices for Henry. Dorian also said he would sell his soul without a second thought something that even made Henry a bit concerned. Finally Dorian quickly rushed to murder whenever he faced a problem something that Henry has never done or adviced to do. It's Also worth noting that Henry merely showed Dorian his lifestyle because he probably thought it was a good lifestyle.

You know seeing this origin really explains Dorian Grey’s betrayal in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I know people don’t like that movie but I greatly enjoy it. Dorian was the only character I didn’t know much about.
i liked this movie too.
The original magazine version and novel used to have LGBTQ themes and alluded to it. Basil was originally in love with Dorian and worshiped him as a muse. Wilde had to republish it, and even had the original version used as evidence against him at his trial before he was sentenced guilty for “gross indecency” or pretty much for being gay/bisexual. It was a reflection of his own relationship with Alfred Douglas, whose father called for the trial out of revenge of him being in a relationship with his son.
He considered the characters of Basil, Henry, and Dorian to be different versions of himself (who he is, who he wants to be, and who people see him as) and that been my favorite aspect of the story
sad thing is in that theoretical, he sold his soul to the devil already and now he's just given up his mortal life.

The main character is uncannily similar to a villain in a movie I once saw.
The villain decomposed rapidly when he saw the painting of him who was dessicated while the painting became seemingly restored becoming young him.
The movie is called the group of extraordinary gentlemen, which is basically the avengers of literary classics, most of the characters are from novels and stuff, and this movie is an adaptation of one of those novels.

Question, do you think Dorian is still alive based on the ending? I am guessing it's a way the movie is trying tell u that devil doesn't die.
It more so represents Dorian's redemption in killing himself for his past sins. The more he did wrong and twisted himself the more twisted the painting became. Once Dorian dies and actually regrets his twisted actions and sins the painting depicts him as handsome and innocent again

Read the book, he's dead as a doornail.
He's dead. By destroying the Portrait he simply concluded his contract with the Devil, got whatever was left of his soul back, died and likely went to Hell to pay his end of the bargain.
Notice how despite the other guy setting it on the fire the portrait didn't really get destroyed until Dorian himself broke it.
I'll be honest, i'd love to never age and be immortal, i could learn all the knowledge in the world and surpass einstein in intelligence, to live thousands of years only to feel as if only a day passed.

Lord Henry is a villain, but not an excuse for Dorian 's behavior. No one can make you do or think anything, if you don' t allow it in your mind. Dorian and only Dorian is fully responsible for everything he did. If he didn't want to be this way, he could have expressed disagreement with lord Henry's words, or he could have simply not paid attention to them, or he could have stopped communicating with him. There are many options.
If only Basil didn't let Dorian in hands of Henry

This story has always fascinated me. Then again, I always like the immortal who is sad and tired from the Earth's pleasures, unable to find true happiness.
What a odd and romantic story. Obviously things got out of control and he turned into a monster, but before that, he was in a loving relationship and everything was good. Even though he did some bad things, he got his humanity back when he met Emily, who gave him a second chance at love. Had he settled down with her, he could have atoned for his previous bad decisions.
Who did notice that the portrait's eyes are shining at the end? Dorian's soul is still trapped inside the picture.

Ever since I watched league of extraordinary gentlemen, I've always wondered what Dorian 's story was

Watched the League of Extroardinary Gentlemen and wondered what Dorian's backstory was. But to kill Dorian he was too stare at the painting, the painting becomes him all decayed while his youthfulness fused to the painting
I need to re-read my copy of this book. I think one thing anyone can take away from it is to "know yourself and who you came in with" (ya know that song Free Fall about someone talking to the Devil and bringing up the toxicity in their Iives, mostly their relationships with other people). If you're around toxic people like Dorian then you're bound to be drawn into their b.s. and tainted. They're also the first people to turn around and call you out (after they tainted you and twisted you into a monster like them).
This is my favorite rendition of this story. Ben Barnes does an amazing job turning such a beautiful face so ugly by the character's behavior.
The way his photo aka portrait was decaying shows his spirit becoming unbalanced while his outward appearance stayed the same dying on the inside while alive on the outside all the things done to his body, mind, heart and spirit shows in the painting until he rights his wrongs due bringing back balance again after righting all of his wrongs. When he lost his lost that’s when the curse consumed him until he restored himself and the painting
The moral of the story is to be very careful while disposing dead bodies as they can reveal your secretive deal with devil
Dorian Gray was a character in Sean Connery's last movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which IMO was actually a pretty awesome movie but sadly got review bombed probably because most audience members just dont tend to like the movies that are actually some of the best.
They probably don't even know the characters being referenced.
I don't think it was "review bombed". It just honestly wasn't that good of a movie compared to the source material it was based off of. This was the source of everyone's frustration with it. I was one of the people genuinely excited for that film back when it was originally released, but left feeling incredibly let down. I hope they remake it one day with a better story/plot.

Pretty impressed 🤔 that the actor also played Jigsaw (villain) for The Punisher Tv Show (Netflix).
I do love these recaps and yes it saves you from watching some really bad movies ( lol). But movies have so much more to offer when you watch them in full. The whole experience is different especially if it’s a good movie! And this movie was pretty good i would suggest watching it 😉
I really enjoyed the movie. That portrait Basil drew was truly astonishing for the movie, a perfect depiction. I really wished the movie: League of Extraordinary Gentleman did sequels on building each and every one of those characters. So much potential which wasn't tapped: including the romantic history between Dorian Grey and the female vampire.
