A fellow tinkerer 👌🏻 Love the approach and refinement to this system. Large camera but every bit of it is functional. I really am perplexed why Sony keeps putting the evf port on the rear ac side of camera. IMO it would be better utilized at the front, above the lens.
Thanks David 😊🤙 it has been a rewarding project. Especially as I have been mulling over the concept and design for nearly 6 years in the back of my head. Yeah I am not sure why Sony do it either, the connector is also weak and flimsy. A nice Hirose, RS or Lemo plug at the front of the camera would be 1000% better location wise, but also way more durable with how strong those connectors are with interlocking metal sleeves. As an aside although not super durable, I love what Black Magic is doing using USB-C cables for their screens and viewfinders. Atleast if the cables break it's cheap and user replaceable and you can buy shorter or longer cables to suit where you need your viewfinder. It's a great option despite its lower durability.
Thanks 😊 it is a really enjoyable handle to use, I wish I had motivated myself to do it ages ago when I thought up the idea 💡 Yeah it definitely needs some end caps for a neater look 😊🤙
A little bit of DIY goes a long way to saving money 💰. It's probably also more comfortable than the mid49 the square profile on that doesn't look very nice to hold on a long day of shooting.
Very clever design. I love this sort of DIY rigging thinking, to fit exact needs, instead of getting one of the pre-made solutions with their limitations. Just a question: where did you find that part with the nato clamp and the tube clamp? Or are they two different things? I can't seem to find that, even in the Aliexpress ocean of rigging parts by obscure manufacturers ;-)
Here is the part: a.aliexpress.com/_m0S9tTt (I have no affiliation with whoever makes this hand grip part) You can make the handle any length by replacing the short CF tube with any 30mm OD Carbon fiber or Aluminium tube or 30mm OD wooden dowel etc.
Great build! I love the versatility. I'd like to make one for my setup but can't seem to find the tube clamp to nato clamp part that's in the front and the back of your top handle. Could you direct me to the listing? Thanks!

I've been looking for a large handle solution to my long setup for a while, the prospect of one little quick release latch holding the entire rig is a bit worrying for me though. Say I'm walking camera in my left hand and it snags my pocket...
If you are worried there are even more secure options for quick release. You could use a Manfrotto 502 slide in plate with a twist lock. Even if the twist lock somehow undoes itself magically it can't slide out because 502 needs it's release lock pressed as well. If both of those things are happening without you noticing well, that's just a lot of bad luck and you may want to get the curse on you lifted 😈
You can also just hard mount it to the cameras top plate, with the arca plate you would still be able to slide it back and forward to balance once the screws are loosened a half turn. Lots of options depending on how strong and reliable you need the connection 🏋️
@@jamesandcamera Interesting points, I think the solution for me might just be a non-moving long handle that has a balance point for when I'm shooting both primes and zooms.

Love the design of this, looks very easy to grab & go.
I agree with the end caps.

Thanks Chris 😊🤙
Awesome!👍👍
Thanks 😊 glad you liked it!
Looks great! Much cheaper than mid-49 rainbow handle 😂
