Most of temples in those times have very intricate to complex irrigation systems and also methods to measure time on Earth or the tides especially for farming and the people's livelihood there. I know the average person like you and me may not be an expert and you just travelling and having a lot of fun along the way but it would been interesting to know the reasons and work that go into places like this given the agrarian lifestyle and livelihood of the people around the region even today.

Syailendra dynastic family came from Srivijaya which conquered by Chola. They fled to Java and built Borobudur temple, Buddhist temple. In Java, they had rivalry with Sanjaya dynasti who Hindu and built Prambanan, Hindu temple.
Shailendra is a Sanskrit combined words Śaila and Indra, meaning "King of the Mountain", It is also another name of Shiva. Therefore, Shailendra dynasty has to have Hindu roots, and later there was a division of the Kingdom after conversion of one Prince into Buddhism; who later built the Borobudur Temple or converted a Hindu Temple. The Buddhist Sewa Candi Temple has a stone engraved carving of Shri Vishnu Bhagwan at the entrance which gives an idea into what must have happenned.
There is no clear evidence yet, where did Syailendra come from. Most of the inscriptions and remains found in Java, very few in Sumatra. Balaputradewa is a Javanese, he is from the Syailendra dynasty, the kingdom of the ancient Mataram era - Central Java. He became the king of Sriwijaya when he lost the throne in Java to his younger cousin. Balaputradewa continued the Javanese Syailendra dynasty in Sriwijaya.
To destroy the asuras in Patallok (underworld), Shiva created Kala Bhairava roop of himself, who I find is being called Batara Kala (Lord of underworld) in Java. You will find Kala Bhairav outside most Hindu temples of Shiva and Vishnu, as destroyer of evil forces (asuras). Also confirms that this Candi Sewu is a Hindu Temple and not a Buddhist one.
