As a South-American who has recently been in the US, I think another reason for airlines to fly at night is that a lot of business passengers don't want to miss a whole working day flying (and therefore prefer night flights)
I love the west to east overnight flight when I go from Oregon home to Florida. Is like I get one more full day to spend with my friend, then I fly overnight, sleep easily, then wake up in the morning, quickly connect my flight, then get home usually around 10-11am, still having a day to do stuff at home with minimal jet lag.
It doesn't matter though. Most companies that require employees to travel compensate them for travel expenses. They pay you for however long the trip takes you.
I actually love having long layovers in bigger airports. I like being able to explore the different areas and it gives me time to relax. My favorite thing to do when I was in Houston and Chicago airports was to ride the trams to the different areas and see what they all had to offer. It's a very interesting experience.
B-52 Bombers made in the 1960s are still in service today. And they're planned to be upgraded for service until 2050. That's almost 100 years , insane.
They can safely fly that long for two reasons: Extremely strict safety in general and - most importantly - the mandatory safety checks: A, B, C and D. In the latter, the whole plane is pretty much taken apart. Everything down to rivets is checked and replaced if necessary. The parts of the aircraft that is under the most stress are also checked for metal fatigue. In the C check, it’s gutted and obviously B and A are smaller checks. Things like engines, tires and cockpit windows are replaced independently of the service checks. Regardless, it really is impressive.
Ignore all the snarky comments, I personally find these things fascinating. Its good to understand how and why all this stuff works. I wish fights were more affordable and the price more predictable so that you can budget for it better.
I hate that when people talk about planes the first thing they talk about is crashing smh it doesn't happen often. If something happened to the plane the pilots are qualified to get everyone safely on the ground
futurepilot 777 ehm, what are you talking about, i just cant find anything on what happends in those situations to the company, their economics, insurance, procedures, like all that. Has nothing to do with the steriotype like "planes crash alot duuuuuh".
I’ve lived about 15-20 miles from DFW my entire life. I have only recently began to understand the significance of hearing planes fly overhead literally every minute. As of May and June 2020, it became the busiest airport on the planet. For whatever reason, it didn’t shut down as much as other airports across the world due to covid
They do. it's more than one person. People don't notice but more of the time before a delay happens no matter the reason they changed the schedule multiple times, just often it's the behind the scenes airplane schedule. They do everything they can to keep it at the same time. It's quite a job
Brazil didn't participate in the daylight savings time (literally called summer time here), in 2020. I believe this could also be the source of this man's anger
Here’s an interesting fact about Chicago O’Hare International ... once Air New Zealand starts service in January, 2019 Chicago O’Hare will be the only U.S. airport offering nonstop service to all 7 continents
Marco Torres ... was born/raised in Park Ridge. Cumberland & Higgins. Grew up in the 50’s/60’s. By 4th grade knew every type of aircraft/airline flying into/ out of ORD. 👍🏻
Just in case you were wondering, St. John’s now only has the flight going to and from Toronto. So yes, my 4 hours flight home from London now takes 24 hours when you include the 12 hour lay over in Toronto.
I feel that I have probably watched this video, and all the other ones about prices and what not, probably around 10 times. And they keep on getting better every time that I watch it.
I was intrigued by the title of this video because I work for SWA. Thank you for doing your research! You hit everything exactly right! This was by far the best and truest look at the airline business and not only how we operate the way that we do, but why! People very rarely understand that, and from someone on the front lines with passengers......Thank You!!!!!! I’ll be looking forward to more videos! ✈️✈️✈️
*ok so, I just started working for an airline, and as a pilot in training I love this video!! It really helped me, was extremely interesting, and incredibly well done! Great job explaining too!*
Great Video Wendover! In South America shorter routes from/to the US operated by US carriers depart late to take advantage of their connections and their planes actually don't remain in the ground longer than 1hr30mins, you can check LIM airport with AA, UA and DL flights
While in NY, I met several tourists from New Zealand. It fascinated me how one airport on one end of Australian would fly them over the Pacific Ocean, letting them connect in LA, while the other end of Australia had an airport that took them across Asia, Africa, and had them connect in Europe.
I appreciate the bird's eye view of the world and the systems within it that wendover videos provide. It really makes me appreciate a lot of very complex things that I otherwise took for granted previously.

If gates were no longer "owned" by airlines, but instead rented by the hour/day on a bidding system, then we could get rid of some of the hub and spoke system and move to smaller planes flying more direct routes... I live in Dallas, the fact is if you want to fly anywhere, odds are it will be on American. Yes, other airlines fly here, but the schedules and choices are poor compared to American which controls the majority of gates at the airport. Likewise, live in Atlanta and Delta just became your new best friend! Remove that control and open the airports up and we could get a better system...
6:58 It's just been announced that the test flight for the Sydney to New York direct flight will be this week, with them hoping to have a route there by 2022!

This is your masterpiece sir. Your productions are flawless. I know people in the airline industry who have confessed your videos are a great tool to understand many of the phenomenons. Your material about economy is also amazing, I feel like a 5 year old watching the Teletubbies, totally hypnotized.
He did make a video about the most profitable airliners, but not the routes they operate. It would be cool to see how much airlines could save by tanking in one country compared to another and where the cheapest crews come from, if you get me :)
Those with the least competition. Guess why you pay more for a flight from Warsaw to Vienna than for one from Hamburg to Munich. On the latter option the train takes six hours and tickets for the train start at 29€
Love your videos. I actually show many of your airline industry videos and others in my classes. It gives our new hires a great insight on how the industry works. Thank you.
This is fascinating. I have a friend from Tampa Florida. We were both going to the same conference in Portland Oregon. She drove through the night to get to Orlando airport since that gave her a direct flight to Portland but Tampa airport didn't. I'm from NY, so I had several airport options for a direct flight.
When his camera goes through the X-Ray in the ad at the end, you can see the X-Ray-induced noise in the footage. Really neat :) (or at least that’s what it looks like)
it would be interesting to note, too, that EDDF won the 2016 Global Hub Connectivity Ranking conducted by hte ACI with 69.000 points. In fact, considering the top 10 of the ranking, half of the "best connecting airports" are located in central europe. Altough this ranking is not limited by the connectivity offered by individual airlines but rather by all airlines combined, I still thought it worth mentioning. Regarding your point about the saudi arabic airlines, I was utterly bewildered when I flew to HKG over Doha with Qatar airlines a few months back. It appeared as if their entire fleet had been retired to catch dust at the airport. I watched from the waiting area during layover the arrival of a Lufthansa aircraft and its timely departure while all other aircraft surrounding it stood still ...
If you fly a lot with Delta and you have to go through LAX a lot, Clear is very helpful because of the long TSA lines caused by Delta moving to Terminals 1 and 2.
my mom is a flight attendant and I’ve flown several times on standby, so on the seats they don’t sell to paying passengers. it’s interesting to see how airlines do everything they can to make sure they’re flights are full. and of course, that sucks when you’re trying to get home and you’re being bumped from flights.
How Airlines Schedule Flights: Airline to customer 1: " Give me your money for that seat. " Airline to customer 2: " And give me your money for the same seat. " Airline after getting paid: " Now you both fork off so my employee can take your seat."
I think that a good subject to focus on would be the hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha that together with the availability of giant A-380 planes have made travelling to Asia cheaper and more convenient.
Banked hubs are actually not all that different from what the Swiss federal railways do for their trains... Only that the Swiss system does not waste hours, but only has the trains sitting in the hub for a few minutes... Maybe you should do a video on that some time... Or maybe one on "Why are trains so great in Switzerland". I know they're not high speed, but a lot of the important stuff is not all that sexy at first glance. Just like lie-flat beds beat the Concorde...
You should look at the schedule for ASKY Airlines based out of Lome, Togo. It is a version of the bank/scissor system on overdrive because the airline only has 8 planes. It's a really impressive network they've built that basically leaves no passengers stranded in Togo but connects all of West Africa, a notoriously difficult place for an airline to operate.
It restores my faith in humanity that a video about airplane schedules can get on trending
Jeremy kback Another thing that restores my faith in humanity is that vsauce, lemmino, cgp grey, life noggin and wendover have lots of subs
talk about low expectations
Man Utd? Arsenal! Arsenal!
Jeremy kback for me, it helps that people are actually learning why airlines do what they do.
I clicked for the thumbnail.
