- www.tergar.org ~ In this short video, Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche talks about his experiences dealing with panic and anxiety as a child. In a second clip, "Using meditation to deal with panic attacks, anxiety, and other painful feelings," he describes how he used the practice of meditation to transform the way he related to these crippling attacks. These clips are drawn from the teachings presented in the Joy of Living meditation workshops, which are offered at Tergar Meditation Centers and Groups around the world. To take a free, self-guided intro to meditation course, visit learning.tergar.... Or, for more information about Mingyur Rinpoche and his teachings, please visit www.tergar.org, where you will find information about events and retreats, and also a free online intro to meditation course. I had my first asthma/panic attack the other night. Scariest feeling ever. So relieved to know that even a monk can have a panic attack. This makes me feel better for some reason. Thank you!
AugustAdvice it sucks. I hope youre doing okay these days
I do hope you get better and both asthma and panic disappears soon. Stay blessed!
How are you now?
Hi. I hope you're doing better!
I agree. In fact, I started to get teary eyed when he talked about being a young boy with anxiety. As a 75-year-old adult, struggling with severe anxiety, I cannot imagine a kid going through this. Makes me want to cry.
try not to force deep breathing, simply observe the breath without judgement for now, as you practice the breath will regulate itself. thats what works for me and i just started myself.
You're absolutely right. Most people who do meditation often take a deep breath instead of focusing on normal inhale and exhale of air..
I agree! :)
This is spot on - it revolutionized my meditations!
Thax That helps alot.
How is it going? I went about 2 month of meditation but it comes back so hard right now, everyday is so bad
This may not help everyone but taking a good magnesium supplement helped me MASSIVELY with anxiety and specifically panic attacks. Many people are deficient in this mineral.
I agree, magnesium is super important
What did you take
How much of mg
If u are thinking of taking pills right now slap ur face take a deep breath and try fighting the panic! Step by step u ll get stronger! Best wishes to all that suffer.
@lionsdale1 I currently take Now brand magnesium malate 345mg daily. Magnesium glycinate is also good but usually more expensive
I did exactly what he did yo overcome my panic an exiety it works 100% :)
Tito Agustin Medina hey good to hear that it worked for you.anyways can u share the technique?
Sonam Gurung I guess u just gotta enjoy the panic
is it still working after 3 years of you posting this?
The method he uses is Mindfulness. You can Google it if you don't know about it
Really?! I need to. Thanks for share.
panic attacks can be overcome..you must calm down and accept it..accept your panic and accept yourself...you must teach yourself to be one with yourself..you can never escape it..but you can control it
cibriosis I have overcome panick attacks I'm dealing now with anxiety it's like a cronic stress I hope the same formula that I use for panick attacks (meditation) works for cronic stress
whatever works..even placebo..
Panic comes uncontrollably because we fear it, learn to love your panic that is the only way.
Never fear, only love.
Can you explain how that can be done?
Thank you for these videos. I had panic attacks in my 20s, but they abated after I began Buddhist practice. Then, after my father's death last year, they resurfaced with a vengeance after many years of dedicated practice. They still continue and are uncontrollable and come without warning, even while sleeping. It's incredibly difficult and a great teacher. It helps so much to hear about others' experiences... so again, thank you very much.
Having the same story as u...
I also trying Rinpoche method to observe and aware of my fear thoughts flowing . My mind always has a disturbance image that house crack , debris fall onto and crack my head . With this technique and Psychiatrists medicine, both help .
Im also struggling with this. I was doing great and then had a traumatic event three weeks ago. Now when I try to meditate, my brain soins and I feel like my brain is rocking. I cant work out if its that causing the anxiety or thev anxiety causing that. I have cptsd but I have worked and worked and worked on myself. Im so disappointed that Iv now got a new challenge when I thought Id passed them 😪 I dont know how to change it and am hoping it will just pass.
"I liked meditation but I didn't like meditating" Hahaha. Same here! Wonderful teacher. Thanks for posting.
Exactly
20 minutes morning meditation 🧘♀️ 10 minutes evening long breathtaking practice, and most important things is take bath at morning with cold water , in 1 month anxiety depression or any things mantels illness will recover.trust me . (Nobody need to suffer)
Are you applied it?
@@ashutoshkumaryadav3929 yes
Bro it's not that easy, roots need to be taken down. Surely yes it helps in little way
Did anyone watch him on the Mindfulness episode of Explained? I was so taken by the way he said "Hello Panic! Welcome" and said that he and panic are good friends. I found it simultaneously adorable and so enlightening!

😭 love that
Can you please share the link? I can’t find it. Many thanks 🙏
I would like to thank you for sharing. People feel so alone with these experiences. Meditation is far better than medication.
Panic attacks are caused by the body reacting correctly to fear - flight mode! however it’s your fear of your body’s redactions that are wrong in the first place. Eg feeling heart racing, causes fear, and feeds this panic cycle . It’s hard to reverse this cycle. Meditation will help. As will meditation. Happy anchors, Magnesium, no caffeine, exposure therapy. And thinking of sex during these times can help.
Thinking of sex? Explain breifly
I feel really helped by hearing your story. Thank you.
Jennifer Green hey jennifer are you suffering from anxiety attaks?
I nearly had another panic attack in work today for the smallest stupid reasons and I feel like when people talk to you and act like everything is ok, it helps me concentrate on that and forget the fear of dying from the attack
When I have panic attacks it feels like I am falling off the edge of the planet or alternately like I am going to die very soon. Recognizing that it is a panic attack helpsb to calm me down. I learned that through being mindful.
I also use prescribed medication for panic attacks which happen infrequently. I take the lowest dose possible and lie down to rest in a dark room and focus on my breathing with the thought that I can take another dose of medication in a half hour if I need to or go to the ER if I have to. Having a plan in place reduces my fear and anxiety. My advice for anyone who experiences panic attacks is to have a plan in place.
I agree. I'm in the same situation as well. My doctor says my heart rate is too high and tried prescribing me heart meds, but I tried to make him understand that I don't feel that way 24/7. I get anxious by going to doctor offices, being in crowds and having people argue badly with me. I have medication but I really need to apply meditation. Having a plan is a good way of being safe, and consciously knowing you'll be okay.

Meditation is the permanent way to handle stress and anxiety. Vipaasna meditation is practiced all around the world as it reprogrames the mind. . Sit on a chair, close your eyes, be still and observe the incoming and outgoing breath at the entrance of your nostrils for 10 minutes early morning and night and later increase it to 25 minutes or more. Several thoughts will come in your mind but with daily practice they will slowly reduce. Watch "Vipaasna meditation practice videos" on Google search engine. Do the above meditation daily- Best wishes.
Slowly after regular meditation reduce the dose or take the medication on alternate days or break the tablet in 2 pieces and take half daily. .

Im in grad school right now and the constant stress is really getting to me. I have anxiety and have been having like one panic attack a week. I really need to start meditating again
i love your videos ! they calm me.
This is certainly not easy, so the first piece of advice is to be kind, patient, and compassionate with yourself. Working with powerful emotions like panic right from the beginning is very difficult. The ideal situation is to start off with the breath or simply being aware of a soothing sound and let your awareness rest naturally. Once you've gotten used to that, it will be easier to bring your awareness to the present moment in the midst of panic, but of course, that is not easy.
i love you brother i have anxiety to thank you for your teaching may god the creator LOVE be with you thank you
Hi! I like your videos. I'm on a quest to find peace and happiness. I deal with anxiety and frustration, and I want to conquer my mind without drugs. So I am on a journey I guess you could say. Thank you Mr. Rinpoche. :))

These 2 video - "My Story (1/2 & 2/2) ~ Using meditation to deal with panic attacks, stress & anxiety" - have been really helpful for me and for so many people I know. So, I would offer my contribution to translate them into Italian (my language) and make this translation and possibly subtitles available also for those Italians who don't understand English. Who should I address to offer my contribution for that? Thanks.

How r u feeling now ?
I have found this video to be supremely helpful. Thank you so much for offering it.
I think he is saying you are not your emotions. I think he is saying you are not your anxiety your anger Etc. You are just Who You Are. Whether you talk about no self in Buddhism or self in Hinduism. They are both the same thing.
I have panic disorder also. The meditation he teaches on simply breathing in and breathing out breathing in and breathing out. Is a very good and easy meditation.
You can even do this laying down. If you simply Focus or concentrate but not hard concentration on simply breathing in and breathing out breathing in and breathing out inhaling and exhaling inhaling and exhaling.
Your mind can only do one thing at a time. So if you have worries or disturbances in your mind, simply inhaling and exhaling and watching your inhaling and exhaling breathing in and breathing out. The things that you are thinking about cannot exist because you are concentrating on one thing only your financial problems your anxiety your sleeplessness your insomnia everything goes away in that period.
Just the best of it is just finding out who you are and that is easy. Whether you call it self or no soul in Hinduism and Buddhism it doesn't matter. Thou art that.
Thank you teacher.
Thank you Master🙏🙏🙏
Thank you
Panic attacks, anxiety (too), is due to hormonal, thyroid, (etc.) diseases. Check your hormones, Antibodies, blood work.
Edited (4th April 2017):
But, that's my own experience; and it may NOT be yours.
Additional, since I was very very young, I went through very traumatic experiences, and very probably it turn on the "anxiety" alarm, as well.
Check also your belief system, and all your past, self history.
And of course, learn, practice the meditation technics and know the "monkey mind" and how to work with it... and yes, check your thyroid, Ab., health in general, anxiety can be due to organic issues as well, but not excluded to each (mind/organic) other.
Hope is of some help.
Blessings.
(Sorry for my english).
Not necessarily. Anxiety and stress can cause hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction etc. Thinking that I'm feeling anxiety because my thyroid is not functioning properly is disempowering. It makes me a victim of the situation.
Like the previous comment said, I don't think so. Everyone's case can be completely different and what triggers them wildly varies from person to person. I have perfect reports in almost everything but I have terrible terrible panic attacks and signs of cptsd. Allopathic docs just give me anti-depressants which are horrible. Much better meditate and exercise everyday. and you're right about the fact that past traumas get stored in the body, just not in the way many people would realise. Sending prayers to you and everyone who is going through a tough time.
my problem is my anxiety attacks don't come due to stress inducers. il be sitting calmly, laughing at a show, or taking a walk and then BAM, im grabbing my chest, im dizzy, my arm feels tingly, and I rush to the ER thinking its a stroke or heart attack and its not. I have high blood pressure and when my BP is up il have them, or il have them and it will cause my BP to spike and make them worse.
the worst part about it all is that we have a HORRIBLE hospital full of doctors that think anxiety is a BS disease. they refuse to give you real treatment, keep saying its because your depressed and feeding me anti-depressants which do nothing. so I have to keep going into the ER and racking up 600$ charges just for an Ativan. I don't know what to do, their getting worse and more common, I just got a job that has a 90day no miss or your fired requirement and im catching myself clutching my chest in the bathroom because if I leave to go to the ER il lose the job. idk what to do..
i get when im hungover but now i know its panic attack ill take it head on ... i didnt know it was just the feeling of danger i thought i was ill an cudnt breathe .. next time ive nothin to worry about so just gunna ride it .. it annoys me so fk it lol u do same mate :>
There's no need to spend any more money, not even on a meditation teacher. If you want to learn formal meditation techniques, there's plenty of free information, but for me I just experimented with bits and pieces of a lot of things, and it has helped me tremendously. This guy is spot on when he says to "make panic your friend", but for me, the way I got to that was to try to simply watch my panic as though from a position outside myself. Panic is just like a cloud passing through you, and you can watch it go by, you can watch you symptoms as well, and once you get the hang of this- even though you may still get attacks- you will see that there is a feeling of space between you and your panic. There won't be the fear of the fear, and then that's one less layer of fear to worry about. After that you can really start to heal faster. See, the thing about panic disorder is that it's like a rash in your mind, it has flare ups and the more you react to it, the more you fear it, the more persistent and strong it grows. But if you learn to simply watch it, to watch all your racing thoughts and feelings as you would watch a cloud go by, then it recedes just like a rash left unscratched. You are simply the space through which this cloud moves through- that's how I visualize it anyway. Another thing that I have taught myself recently that I wish I had known years ago is focused relaxation. Basically all I do is I lay down, usually before I go to bed for the night, and I focus on each part of my body and tell myself "You can let go of the tension in your ____" whichever part I'm at. Personally, I find it best to move from my head, to shoulders, to arms, to chest, to ribs/stomach, to hips, to knees, to feet. Oddly enough I find it much more effective to focus on bones rather than muscles. I start by focusing on relaxing my jaw bone, my teeth, my nasal cavity, my temples/eyebrows, behind my ears, the base of my skull, between my shoulder blades, shoulders, elbows, wrists, finger joints, then back to my clavicle, my chest, my ribs, and so on. You will find yourself naturally breathing quite deep, especially by the time you get to your chest. You can also imagine your mind and body being filled with loving energy as you do this. With practice, you can feel almost elated after you do this.
hii ... how r u now? .. im experiencing the similar problem now .. have u been able to find any solution ?
Arjun singh Hey! There is a guided meditation app called 'headspace' that very much helped me. This panic nonsense is tough, but try and remember thar YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN EXPERIENCING THIS. Some days are near impossible, but if I can make it, so can you!
Sometimes you can have buried traumas your not aware of.
A simple image on tv, a smell or someone mentioning something that is associated with past trauma can trigger panic attacks.
Your subconious picks up all the associations to past traumas. But your consious mind isnt aware of it because your mind is trying to protect your psyche as a self defence mechanism.
Thanks alot master..
he's sweet

My anxiety was formed by being picked on by my supervisor and coworker calling me names and stupid. My boss likes to put coworkers against each other instead of getting us to bond. Create and form friendship isn’t possible. If you get close to one person they find ways to divide us. It’s been going on for far too long and now they think I’m crazy.

Mingyur Rinpoche is on extended retreat right now in the Himalayas, so he won't be able to respond, but you can get lots of support on the Tergar Learning Community website. I'd recommend taking Joy of Living I or the free Intro to Meditation course. I hope this helps!
I just want to know how to get a gap or a space between my thought /emotion / fear DURING the panic attack so I can nail it.
Thank you so much for the video. I always have been fond of Meditation.
Unfortunately my Guru Paramahamsa Nithyananda who is teaching vedic tradition and bringing more consciousness to the world is tried to be stopped in his mission.
Can you please help to bring the truth to the world by sharing this video:
Easier said than done....in the middle of a panic attack I am fear all over. World around me looks different and I only have two emotions fear and self pity that I may die - poor thing ! There is no space for myself at that time to differentiate from the fear and sadness of self pity . How to separate myself from fear or panic and use it skillfully? I dont know how.....how ? May be with some tranquilizers like alcohol ? I am serious and I am desperate....
Do you feel better today ?

Well there may be faulty illusions but Rinpoche did NOT deliver in his word in this video and explain it. If "fault" exists perhaps I've missed something. Perhaps in the west we want "fair up front notice" and "consumer enlightenment protection;" in the east it may be that it comes later. So perhaps it's a matter of style. But sometimes style and substance are one in the same ... best wishes and practices for however enlightenment occurs ...
Does anyone know what to do when you get to a point of vibration? Most people don't seem to know what's going on.
