Explaining Gabby Petito's Autopsy Results With a Forensic Expert

  • This week on The Debrief, Pei-Sze Cheng takes a deep dive into this week's autopsy results in the Gabby Petito case, and talks with the team behind Wondery's The Vanished podcast about why some missing persons cases get more attention than others.
More on the case: Investigators have added a cadaver dog as part of their ongoing, exhaustive search of the 25,000-acre Florida preserve where Gabby Petito's fiancé Brian Laundrie allegedly said he was heading for a hike the day he disappeared, the assisting sheriff's office confirmed to News 4 on Thursday.
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office, which is about an hour and a half drive from the Carlton Reserve, which has been the focal point of the FBI's hunt for Laundrie since he vanished a month ago, said the human remains detection dog was requested.
A spokeswoman said the animal was provided at the request of both the FBI and the local North Port police department. She said her sheriff's office is the only one with that type of dog so it is in high demand, adding that Thursday isn't the first time her office has been asked to assist in this particular investigation.
The intensity of the Carlton Reserve search appeared to ramp up accordingly. NBC affiliate WFLA reported that multiple law enforcement vehicles were spotted on the Venice end of the reserve Thursday morning, marking the first time this week the affiliate's crews had seen activity at that entrance. There was a flurry of renewed activity last week, too, when Laundrie's father assisted in person for the first time.

Having said that lastly and most importantly it’s y’all. If she was a woman of color NBC wouldn’t be doing this story right now. So y’all in the media need to do better. I have no power to make a missing persons case go global … YOU DO. So ask yourself that question

What’s worse is the parents said they’d hoped she didn’t suffer. As a competent swimmer, when the body needs oxygen it does some weird stuff to fight for air. There was probably a massive struggle on that little rocky outcropping in that completely scenic and peaceful looking park. So a sad and desperate and a totally unexpected place to die. REFORM missing persons protocols NOW, which would require going off of social media and expressing these opinions by phone or letter to your elected officials that you should have voted for. Make the people who you voted for do their jobs, and they literally should be serving the public... so you as the public... should be telling them what to do. This also applies for things like economic inequality and housing reform, literally they work for you, so tell them what you want reformed. The problem is that they need numbers to act on priorities, and elected officials definitely don't read social media, so they need to see those numbers in terms of calls and letters to their offices on whatever issues you feel are important and need action on. Pass it on, and then get off social media and call and write to your electeds.

Wrong, they knew nothing about her death..Brian lied to them. They didn't want to get in the middle of Brian and Gabby's parents because they didn't realize he knew she was dead (what parents imagine there son is a murderer?) Brians remains were located today in the park where the parent originally found his car and then took it home still thinking he was perhaps still in the park and then took the car back the next day thinking he would need it....still a lot of information wasn't known to them..not until they found her body. Brian knew he would have to face prosecution and his parents had already been through so much with all the harrassment at their house..but in no way did they really know what happened until they found her body.....they they co operated with the police to find him. The parents were actually the ones that returned today where the car was at and found his back pack and some other items and turned them over right away to the FBI and they then started the search NOT in Carlton but another area which the parents had already told them about so why the FBI didn't check there is beyond me....but this whole time Brian has been dead.

I wish it were that easy for some people. But you have people who are in abusive relationships and try to get away but the abuser makes it nearly impossible. Some people literally fear for their lives and have virtually no way out. I can’t imagine being in that kind of turmoil. Some abusers are so sneaky and conniving that they find ways to turn everyone against the victim, make the victim look like a crazy person. I’ve never experienced an abusive relationship myself but I would never tell a person who is experiencing it to “just leave” because it’s much more complicated than that for a lot of people.

Bet Gabby never in a million years, thought that the photo of her with Angel Wings would be beamed all over the world. If her tragic death, makes just one person in an abusive relationship-reassess their own safety, and/or their children’s safety -then at least a tiny glimmer of hope can come from her death. In such a tragic situation-not helped by the actions or lack thereof of the ‘person of interest’ and his family, I can see why it’s important to Gabby’s family that it sends a message to others in the same situation Gabby was in before she was murdered.

Amen. This is why I don’t object to the media referring to Laundrie as ‘Gabby’s fiancé’ or ‘boyfriend’. I know it stirs up a lot of anger and I appreciate why. However, it serves as a powerful message and warning to others who may be in love with a controlling partner. It’s the truth; Gabby’s life was taken by someone she had loved enough to get engaged to and trusted enough to take him with her on an extended road trip to remote places in a tiny van.

Hindsight is always 20/20, so if people can use that hindsight from Gabby’s situation, and then attempt get themselves and/or a loved one out of a similar DVsituation, then, they may just be saving a life, and not adding another shocking statistic to the already appalling numbers of women that are murdered by romantic or ex romantic partners.

Yes, well said. The sad part of this is the police interview to me. She was distraught and blaming herself ,he was laughing and blaming her. Witnesses attested to his antagonism and aggression to restaurant staff, to hitting her on the roadside ( same day, earlier) but they went with sobbing woman is aggressor, calm man is abused. What did they call it…? A “ minor” “ slap-fight”. Training and exposure has not sharpened their observation skills. Gabby said he was effectively choke gripping her jaw ,she had scratches on her face that burned her,she said. They focused on his “ injuries” . She was clearly in over her head and did not realise how bad her situation was. He murdered her by throttling her. What Gabby described, seated crying in the car was a previous throttle to her face and jaw. That little woman was too nice and wanted everything to be picture perfect romantic and blinded herself to the danger she was in. So sad.

I actually thought it was a robber/murder or maybe someone who targeted them for another reason from the beginning. If you study other cases where people go missing in the wilderness, you'll see the same similarities. Chances are it could have been a serial killer as well. If there is no evidence, no witness and no confession you can literally get away with murder. Even a confession can't necessarily be used in court because it's circumstantial.

Even though Gabby tried to cover for him if you look at the footage from the police Body cam, Gabby had marks on her face.5) he was the last person to see her. There is just so many things that leads the police to make him the only person of interest and usually when a serial killer or someone targets someone they kill them right there and then. I don't think they would kill Gabby in Wyoming and travel and track Bryan down in Florida and killed him too. I think that his parents knew where he was hiding all along and once they hadn't heard of him for a while the parents decided to go check on him. They have been reported to have burner phones even though they are denying it. That's why it took them 30 minutes or less to find him. So the FBI and volunteers didn't find him for nearly a month but it took two senior citizens to find him in 30 minutes. They had to know something. Because people tend to be interested in 'what really goes on behind the perfect front-door' stories. Gabby and her fiancé looked like the perfect couple and her social media image projected harmonious bliss. Cartwheels in the sand, BBQing on the beach, endless romance, living their dream and breaking away from the 'rat race'.
The reality was that it was a nightmare. They argued like *all* couples do about mundane things, they didn't really stay in the van but frequented hotels to no doubt get a hot shower and clean up. Let's face it living in a van for months on end isn't bliss, it is probably a hygienic nightmare.
Yes we all made mistakes and did stupid things when we were young - mine was a camping trip with friends one summer to France. Where we finally realised that young French women were not attracted to semi-literate, badly dressed, unkempt looking young men who hadn't showered in days.
But Gabby's trip had a Shakespearian tragic ending and this really attracted the attention of the public, not just for voyeuristic reasons but the realisation that this could be you or this could be your child. Gabby appeared innocent, even childlike, with a desire for perfection that you will not find in a van travelling cross-country. She was also likely prone to the odd crying fit when she felt under stress, as we see from the video interaction with the police.
This is no criticism of her but just an aspect of her character, I don't think she had OCD in the clinical sense but rather was neat, tidy and orderly and this was likely a form of coping mechanism when stressed. I, and I presume many others, find straightening things out or organising things to be relaxing. It's not a 'condition' if it only takes a few seconds.
On the other hand, he clearly had serious anger management issues - the incident in the restaurant where he repeatedly went back in to re-argue a losing argument was telling.
We all know the type, they don't cool off but get angrier and angrier and keep returning to 'have it out'.
For these two to try to live in a confined space was a lit fuse waiting to go off. This reality contrasted with her social media soft-focus perfect life veneer and probably trapped her. She couldn't admit the nightmare she had stumbled into because her blog was about perfection and bliss and with no safety valve for either of them or people to intervene the outcome was all but a foregone conclusion.

When you make your life a professional/aspirational glorification of "van life" and then there's dark things under the surface, I don't care who you are, that's going to be intriguing.
That said, this case has generated a lot of talk about bringing in other, more diverse, missing person stories. Let's see if the media holds itself to task and actually practices what it's preaching once this case has been resolved. My theory is that all the talk is actually just to quiet people uncomfortable with the amount of publicity that this case received, to distract from the ways in which media engages in sensationalism for profit. I'm sad to say that I doubt there will be more coverage of other missing persons once this case has been resolved.

Well, she was young, pretty and white. She had a great figure. She was middle class - so right there a lot of parents and people are able to project their kids onto the canvas of Gabby. There is a lot of great quality footage and content of Gabby, particularly where we get to see her sunny personality come through. There's also a lot of content with her and her boyfriend. It's all very aspirational, Instagram living where people are slightly jealous that they're out having the adventure of a life-time. And, yet, as with a lot of true crime, the perfect couple were quite different when the camera turned off. Also, there's that police footage. That was a 'near miss', a crossroad where it feels like slightly different behaviour would have avoided this outcome. All of those things in combination will already be attractive to the mainstream media, let alone everyone else. Not to mention Brian's odd behaviour that pointed to a true crime mystery. Returning without his girlfriend? Refusing to answer questions? Speaking to a lawyer, but not Gabby's parents. I can see why this has blown up. I just hope they catch the boyfriend very much alive. I'd also appreciate some sort of platform where other missing cases could be given a higher profile. I appreciate that human nature means that we are all more interested in cases that resonate with us on a personal level e.g. we come from the same geographical location, we've been in that type of toxic relationship etc. But, I think if missing person's cases had similar amounts of high quality content it would make a difference in coverage. @@kitcoffey7194 I’m pretty sure if she wanted to leave she could’ve stayed with her parents to figure out what she’s going to do next and on top of that she could’ve broke off the engagement. Some people can just be crazy tho, he manipulated her and some people just fall victim to the manipulation. Then again, I doubt she ever told anyone else that he was being abusive to her, she probably kept it a secret but if I was her friend and she wouldn’t told me what was going on I for sure would’ve told her parents and the cops. Some victims just either are too afraid or they do not want to leave the relationship because they’re attached to the person or they don’t know what life would be like without them and they fear life without them. It’s honestly supper tragic and I feel so bad for her but I have seen so many cases too where people can know what’s going on with a couple who are being abusive and they try to separate them but they just somehow keep going back to each other and then this ends up happening.

From the way it was handled from the beginning, Brian showing up without her, given so much time to rabbit, dog the bounty hunter showing up and supposedly finding stuff the FBI didn't, Brian's Dad all the sudden going out for a day to help the FBI look for him, and then the picture of him laughing with an FBI agent (who looks almost just like his son). Really can't pin down the reason for Gabby getting so so much attention . It all started with the police stop when the coward Brian was reported to 911 for hitting Gabby . She is or rather very young and very beautiful . So many people become very concerned for Gabby because we all know who killed her - I don't even like mentioning this creeps name . I just pray they find him before the sun goes down today so he can get convicted of this horrendous and insidious crime against Lovely Gabby so he can suffer the mistreatment waiting for him in prison by real hard core criminals that have a zero tolerance for this creeps kind . He will suffer by the hand of convict's waiting for him . His teeth will knocked out one day , the next day his his jaw will be busted , the day after that his hands will be severely broken and it only gets worse each encounter with this creep , then he will be strangled by his own cellie . That is the way prison is - I'm not proud to say I been there , but I've witnessed countless ugly ugly beat downs before they finally take him out . Excuse me dirty laundries - the things mentioned above is waiting for your coward creep son is definitely waiting for him and you can't help him , the correctional officers won't help your boy because they will be the one's to set him up and turn there back on him during every single altercation . Hope you understand , but that is prison - he will be treated like a child molester . It is very very ugly undescribable . But he will get his attention inside prison - believe that . - you'll hear all about it . Laundry family.

That is all a matter of opinion. And clearly it's YOUR OPINION that she is "prettier" and saying that makes you all look kinda ugly in this situation. Gabby's case is different because the FBI is investigating. It's gone state to state. Other cases have not. Whether Brian strangled Gabby himself, or he left her alone and someone else did it, he is still responsible. Most likely, only Brian can tell us exactly what happened and why.
If he is still alive, I am sure he will be found. His face and name are known worldwide at this point. If his parents are involved, I'm sure they will face justice.
Domestic violence is real and heartbreaking. The video of the police stopping them in my opinion clearly shows Gabby as a victim of domestic violence. She tries to cover it up, even going so far as to blame herself to keep him out of trouble. This is very, very common in this type of situation.
May this tragic soul rest in peace.

How about the fact, that he was back in Florida with her van on 09/01/21, how long it takes to drive in the van from Worming (west side of the country), to Florida (South-east)? 2411 ml (around), almost 35 hr of uninterrupted driving (around two days, if you drive day and night. But if you sleep, take the breaks for 12 hours, then drive 12 hours, it takes about 3 days, if you can drive for 12 hours straight. so, he had to leave Wyoming around 09/27/21, if he was in a hurry, and after what he did, I believe strongly, that he would be in a great hurry, to safe his ass (not get arrested). And find a place and support to hide. On this picnic they went to, after he came back from Wyoming, the whole family, they preplanned everything. So she was killed on 09/27/21 or earlier, he could not kill her on 28, or 29 of September and suddenly appear in Florida with a van. It takes time, at least a few days to drive from Wyoming to Florida.

I live in Santa Cruz and love the Pleasure Point area. Every day I see what I'd call "kids" young 20 year olds having a wonderful time with transit vans and campers. Gabby did come here around the time she and her killer went to SF. Folks will go see SF and then Big Sur. We all need a break and the beach van thing looks so fun. I always just hope and actually say prayers as I cruise by that none of the lovely visitors we get have a traumatic violent end to their exploring. You have the right to be safe and take in nature without being murdered or raped. Honestly I don't go on hikes alone because of my fear of being harmed. Thats a terrible loss in ones life to not go.We need to have documentaries on all the innocent folks killed and vanished all races and ages of missing people.
