Mine is about the same length as yours, and I struggle to keep it in a bun, because I never thought of twisting it and putting it in a knot first. Thanks for the great tips. I'll have to give this a try.

Yeah this length is a bit long for a non twisted bun 😅 the amount of pins required gets ridiculous and even then it feels unstable

I tried it straight away and WOW!
    1. Works even for my thin hair (long though, same length as yours.) Sure, my bun is tiny, smaller than my small fist, but it works.
    2. Took max 5min even at first try. Sure, I make the braid bun that fast, but I'm not generally good at making things with my hair. The knot makes all the difference! (Even gives it some height in my case.)
    3. Feels almost weightless, my neck thanks you! My previous go-to, making a braid into a bun at the nape, is something I can't wear when tired - I get too sensitive to it.
    4. For the first time ever, I managed to do something useful with the U-pins. Didn't use one single bobby pin.
Now I just have to get used to the flyaways, which are plenty. And maybe make myself a hood for outdoors.

Given the hairstyles and clothing worn by Victorians and Edwardians, it is little wonder that the affluent women and men needed ladies's maids and butlers.
As a young woman, I always spent a fair bit of time each day shampooing, blow drying, and curling my hair. I needed to look nice for my office, but I never enjoyed it. It was a lot of work each morning. Now that I am old, all I do is make sure my hair is clean and combed. I wear it reasonably short now, and I much prefer it this way. I do love the Edwardian styles, though. I loved the ladies hair, clothing, hats, etc. on Downton Abbey for example. Love the Gibson Girl look. I would never have the patience to try to create that look for myself, though.

For me, short hair needed a lot of work to look neat and decent enough. At least 30min each morning, and even then I wasn't usually satisfied. My thin and wavy hairtype doesn't behave nicely when shirt, it goes every which way.
Long hair? Wash once, max twice a week, braid to dry and let it be, unless I want it some other way. But even this hairstyle, done the first time ever, took me 5min including the combing.
I'd need the hairstylist at home with short, not long hair.

Oh and less-affluent people definitely wore their Victorian and Edwardian style clothes without maids or butlers. The first person to be hired would be a cook / cleaner, who wouldn't have time to serve with the clothes much.

I do, too. I do not think I could have kept my hair that long if I lived in those days, though. I have very oily skin and scalp. I normally bathe and shampoo twice a day to keep up with the oil, and the longer the hair, the more time it takes to dry and style.

1890s messy bun, I love it! :) I'll have to rewatch before I can attempt it! My hair is down to my tailbone and I usually wear it in a 'nautilus' bun with a hair fork, or in a braid. I want to perfect my crown braid so I can wear it to work, but currently it slips off my head too easily.

I don't know what hair texture you have so that might factor in, mine is fairly coarse and not very slippery but I've found that the u shaped pins hold my crown braids really well when you put in in facing the wrong way then twist and press down the rest of the way. If that makes sense.

@@sewthroughtime I just got some U pins to try, so hopefully that will work! Unfortunately mine is straight and slippery.

Thank you! I achieved the perfect hairstyle with this tutorial. Would you consider making one for a half-up 1870s hairstyle?

I bought a broad-rim hat and would love to see a hairstyle for under hats!

I wear this style often under hats if the hats shape works with it. But I'll keep that in mind for future videos 😊

Somehow I missed you comment 😱 I might... Not sure yet though. I have several videos right now already filmed so it might be a while still before I do one 😊
