I'll always love Taarna.
I've named so many videogame characters after her, and Aviendha from _the Wheel of Time_ book series.
I think she was in a Simpson's episode. You smell the spray of a uncut cat, a male, and begin fantasizing this. Kenny had an exceptionally good time.
Except her boobies were much bigger and everything had boob designs, from building towers to the shoulders of military uniforms.

I named my youngest daughter Taarna, she is in her 30s now and a total warrior.
Elmber Bernstein deserved an Oscar for his work on this movie.
I've always considered this the most beautifully done segment of the entire movie. The story line, animation and music are just wonderful. And Taarna is a bad-a## warrior!

@@Nombrenooriginal You do know that the animation was all hand-drawn (or rotoscoped), right? No computer animation back in 1981. Not really fair to compare something from 40 years ago with modern tech.

If you mean "slow to you" then that's a judgement call, based on your personal preferences. Objectively, the animation in Heavy Metal seems very consistent with the state of the art from the late 70s or early 80s.

The ending always confused me, but here is what I think happens, I think the Loc-Nar exists in all times and realities, he is the embedment of all the evil and hatefulness absorbed into its body. I think the stories and villains from the other stories are what fueled it, and gave it consciousness, which ultimately columnated in it creating the mutant army to destroy all good in the universe. However once it met Taama, she utterly destroyed it by a noble sacrifice neutralizing the sum of the evil energy it collected, thus destroying its incarnation throughout all times and realities. Doing so created a compression in time and reality, that merged the girl from the beginning with Taarna, as she was her soul-ancestor, thus creating a world that is a fusion of all realities Loc-Nar existed in.
The end is the beginning the girl becomes Taarna and ultimately she is the woman warrior who destroys the Loc-Nar which had come to her to end her story before it could begin.
@@fmlazar I thought the girl was the founder of the Tyrakians (sp), that's why Loc-nar wanted to kill her. Instead he helped create them.

@@fmlazar Both make sense. I could go with this being The First Tarakian because her "birthmark/Tattoo" is on the opposite side of her neck as opposed to the side its shown on The Taarna in the Story.
Kind of incredible how much this movie stands out for it's time. Mature, space-themed animation was either something Japanese, or Heavy Metal.
That bird is durable. Damn.
It's a shame Taarna never got a game made out of her adventures.

I like how she managed to win. She couldn’t best the bad guy’s fighting but she befriended a loyal beast. These days, they just let the Marry Sues win like it’s nothing
Also the scene before this, they had captured her, stripped her, and tortured her. So she didn't have an easy go of it at all.
And they would animate her like a dude, *cougth* *cougth* Teela (he man) *cougth*
The modern fanfic heroine is a woman’s body acting in a way that women think men are, and then having all setbacks removed. It’s hollow at every level.

YES taarna CAN best the bad guy's fighting, she just needs to focus more in order to overpower him in battle REAL good, because taarna is STRONGER and MIGHTIER than the bad guy
Let's here is for one of the all-time best scores by the late Elmer Bernstein, he just knocked it out of the ballpark on this one, it's worth mentioning that the theme for Taarna was first written for the film SATURN 3, but more or less no used in the final cut of that film, however he found a wonderful home for it in this movie.
Finally! Someone is giving Elmer Bernstein the credit he deserves!
Bernstein did the score? No wonder it sounds familiar. First score that came to my head was the original *"Ghostbusters"(1984).*
Her theme is very beautiful . Ive always loved it.
This and Conan the barbarian from Basil Poledouris, two of the finest soundratcks from the 80's.
Taarna spoke not one word, and yet her character always stood out the most.
Watched this on 3.5 grams of mushrooms and this scene repeated itself like 50 times in my head lol.

So wait, the loc nar was telling the little girl stories, right? So that ending bit was basically: "and then she blew me up" "... She blew you up?" "SHE DID? NOOO"

The Loc-Nar made a big mistake in underestimating Taarna while the Loc-Nar was pure evil Taarna was pure good full of good and justice in her heart and it was that that led to it's destruction.
It's the unavoidable tunnel vision of an entity driven by selfishness and malice. It can't conceive of self-sacrifice in any but intellectual analysis.
This is absolutely out of context for me, but what an absolute compelling story and beautiful work.
It easily conveys a tale of adversity, I can clearly sense the established connection between the heroine and her majestic steed, and their mutual agreement of universal sacrifice for the greater is haunting as they were fully assured to the end.
To be completely honest, it's Heavy Metal. Context doesn't exactly exist for the stories.
This movie always gives me such interesting feelings. It's like a song that you can't fully understand. So for me the film is about a truth that we cannot grasp. I'm hypnotized and mesmerized every time I see the film.
I wonder if her armor played a part in her initial ascension and her resilience ... the Taarna segement is clearly a prime example of a technologically decadent world/dying world theme, which means anything is possible, even armor that appears worthless but could be teeming with high tech ... the glove may also prevent the sword from "sacrificing" herself prematurely ... Once she assumes the proper grip and stance, and perhaps mindset too, her second ascension to a being of pure energy takes place ... or maybe she just looks awesome as hell in it and that is part of the reason Taarna is a modern icon now!

Bought the DVD many years back in Dolby DTS. Love the sound and the animation. Still watch it now and then.
The great comic writer and movie ghostbuster Harold Ramis also was involved in this. I recognized his voice on another clip here. Awesome visuals ( esp the women hehe) and mind blowing stuff for its day.
If I stuffed that much cosmic dope up my nose, I'd be able to see ghosts and weird monsters too. 😉

Indeed. There's a certain realism in Taarna's fighting strength that most of today's female movie heroes, or male movie heroes for that matter, somehow haven't fully achieved.

I remember seeing this movie some forty years ago at the ABC Shaftesbury Avenue cinema in London. Loved it at the time especially the great soundtrack. Thanks for rekindling the memories.

Well the sequel was put out, but that was Heavy Metal 2000 and it was awful!

Greatest animated movie of all time
It has to be given all the different stories involved in it. Just the background scenery alone stands out with more details than most others - including Fritz The Cat.
Magic was in play.

Lord of the rings ( cartoon) and Battleship Down (cartoon)... Blew my mind as a ten year old. VHS tape. This movie was A little bit "dirty" for me at the time. I also loved to this day ,Fire and Ice.
My sister told me Mom was curious about this movie. Sister 20 years old took Mom 53 then to see it. My sister said it appear to her as a Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury and Edgar Rice Burroughs had a collaboration.
