    I underpinned my basement in 4' sections years ago. I am planning on doing another one. Great ideas and safe.This is the best basement excavation video I have seen! let me know when phase 2 comes out.

    You sir are an inspiration! You are doing almost exactly what I want to do. My wife and I bought the 2100 sq ft ranch house about 5 years ago. The property was foreclosed on and sat empty for 3 years. Really nice house though and we got it cheap. I'm in the country but close to our little town. I've got woods and a creek that flows through my property. We really like the house but it has no storage. It has a 48" high crawlspace and the back side comes out of a hill. It would be perfect for a walkout basement. I though about doing a partial basement or maybe a full basement but in stages like maybe 1/4 completed an the start another when that one is completed. My 3 teenage boys would be very helpful and I would do all the work ourselves.
    I have thought a lot about this (years) and there are some youtube videos but none that even come close to your video series. Thank you for taking the time to document the process! I will be looking forward to the updates!

    Lee, I’m 37, in southeast Indiana. Don’t know when but somehow I’m comin up, and we’re gonna have a beer! Watched all the vids up to this point. Very impressed sir. I started a similar dig before we had kids, on my old house(now a rental) that I bought when I was 19. You’ve put me to shame!! Had several set backs not related to the project, that brought it to a never ending pause. Fast forward 12 years and three kids, bought another larger house moved out and it’s outta sight outta mind. One of these days. Looking forward to viewing the rest of your progress!!

      The "satisfying" aspect is a point that many don't understand. Congratulations on tackling a project that a risk-adverse guy would have walked away from. As information, our project is about 360m3.

    You are a hard working and smart man/engineer! I was wondering how much it would have cost to have the house lifted and machinery driven in from outside and poured walls and footings installed?

    • @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201
      @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We did get estimates on some of the scope & stopped the process rather than waste the contractor's time. A close estimate would be $140 - $150k US. We would need to move everything out of the house, & move back in 10 months later. We would also need to re-landscape. We have a quiet neighborhood, & don't think the big iron, mess, & trucks would be appreciated.
      I was looking for something productive to do in retirement, so we went this way. Out of pocket for this project should be about $44k US. I bought & built some equipment, and that will all be sold when we're done. It's been a great experience after an eventful career. No regrets.

      Research a product called Dexpan Demolition grout. We easily sheared off concrete footing stubs that were 5"W x 12" thick x 5' long (in one piece) with only 1/2 hour labor to drill holes. The stuff is not expensive & can sometimes be reused. It might give you an option to manage the stone base.
      You'll see some of the results in the video called "Time Lapse."
      Thanks for watching

      I had a good background in commercial construction & did the plans and pulled the permits myself (including a plan & fill permit where we dumped the spoil.) City inspected 3 times and reappraised after. No problems with any of it. Permits costed $300 US.

      @@joemanflyer2001 In Green Bay here.
      You are smart to keep the engineering and permits as required. Eventually you will sell the place and would have a major problem if the work was done without paperwork and inspections.
      We had quite the compliment from the city engineers - they said if anyone comes in saying they are going to do an underpin, city tells them to watch videos of our project, and if they can't do it like that, to not do it at all.
      One argument we had to make over & over - When you dig a socket out for underpin, the wall is actually working like a beam to span the opening. We also learned that a furnished ranch house weighs 1,000# pre lineal foot on the bearing wall sides (where the joist & trusses end), and 600#/ft. on the non-bearing sides.
      The very best of luck to you, Sir. Hat's off for taking it on!

    What would you figure the cost invested to do this project was and how many people did you hire to help?

    • @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201
      @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cost for excavation and underpinning was $42k US. New furnace and plumbing added $9k more. We went a little over budget b/c we added in-floor heat.
      I did 90% of the work up to the phase 1 recap working alone. My brother worked with me for a bit otherwise.
      On the remainder of the project, the only workers were my brother-in-law, Joe, and me. We generally worked 5 hrs./ day.

    Did you modify your excavator bucket so that you can reverse it, or did it come that way?

    • @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201
      @diycrawlspacedigoutunderpi4201  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You noticed - wow! The mini came w/ 2 buckets. I cut the ears off one & reversed them. Important that bucket can tip @ 45 degrees when you weld them back on. It only takes a few minutes to change buckets, so I use both. Minor down side - when working as a shovel, the weak (piston) side of the cylinders are doing the work, so breakout force cuts by 30 percent.

      I'm a Wisconsin farm kid. In my career worked in big commercial construction, machine building, heavy industries (machining, casting, welding 40 ton parts,) automation, machinery moving, & installs. I decided to build/ repurpose equipment to do my underpinning job and do the work myself. I'll sell the equipment as I finish with it. The project is going well, & has been a fun challenge.
