The Book Thief:
Told from the perspective of death (with no other supernatural elements as far as I could tell), a little girl and her brother are to be given up by their mother to be taken care of by an elderly couple during World War 2. The brother dies during transit and is given a short, roadside funeral, where one of the gravediggers accidently drops their manual. The little girl steals it.
Basically, the rest of the story is of the girl getting used to her new situation, getting to know her foster parents, her learning to read, and the horrors of being a wartime jew (as her foster parents house one to keep him safe).
Theres more to it (and a good reason why the book is titled "The Book Thief"), but I don't want to spoil it. Warning though, the story is both heart warming, terribly sorrowful, and wrapped up in a bittersweet package.

I must reluctantly back Jake up and point out building near the water like that gets it flooded whenever there is a storm. Water also does damage to wooden structures, so every storm would have been bringing it closer to collapsing around you.
EDIT: I immediately regretted backing Jake up.

You can actually build foundation around the water if you have enough stone then build the rest of what you want to build.
That was a very weirdly lovely proposal right there.
