  • Three-dimensional (3D) printing and related additive manufacturing technologies have started to displace traditional manufacturing in a wide range of industries and applications. The August, 2017 issue of MRS Bulletin highlights 3D bioprinting approaches, including advances and challenges in support materials and multimaterials printing, along with applications in tissue engineering and organs-on-a-chip. The talks in this webinar expand upon the articles in the MRS Bulletin issue, and attendees were able to interact-in real time-with the webinar presenters. This is Part 1 of 2.

It’s amazing how most of the technical problems deal with supporting the cell structures as they develop in a gravitational field. If it was economically feasible, it seems a massive simplification would be to print in microgravity, say on the ISS. Space will play a big part in our lives on Earth

I have a math and physics background, so some of this is going above my head, but this is very informative. The high-level concepts make sense. It would have been nice so him to briefly explain the mechanism that makes cells specialize according to how they are arranged (function follows form). Regenerative medicine is an interesting field 😊🙏🏽

I came across a team from Russia that is using magnetic fields to guide cells into position and keep them in place while counteracting gravity. Very clever stuff!
