We have almost been out here for two months now and we are so incredibly excited to say that we finally have off grid internet! Until now, we have had to go to our gym in town in order to upload videos. This is our first video that has been uploaded using our off grid internet! We decided to use a company called "Unlimitedville". The way it works is you pick a plan and they send you a router. This router picks up a signal from a cell tower from the plan that you have chosen. This is ideal for people in rural areas with low cell tower traffic. However, since we are so far from town and a cell tower, we needed to add two "Yagi" range extenders to maximize our connection. We initially wanted to get broadband internet but we are so far from town that this is our only option for truly unlimited internet. We are really happy with the results so far. Initially, we wished that we could use broadband but we are really happy that we ended up going with this service because now we feel like we are truly off the grid. With broadband, we would have had to have a cable installed from the grid and running to our home. We plan on strengthening our reception one day soon with a more permanent setup once our shipping container home is built.

Any time a TH-camr can post a positive uplifting string of content, especially with being eco-friendly, you two will be superstars almost right away. It's always refreshing to see REAL people doing life, challenging themselves, and posting it all. TH-cam is sadly full of negative trash for sensationalism purposes. Thank you for deciding to broadcast your journey!

    1. Cabling - Make sure you're using the best, low-loss cable.
    2. Antennae - Precise aiming, as well as separation and positioning optimize reception. Mount the antennae on the same plane, separated by at least four feet, and angle the bottoms toward each other at an approximate 30° angle.
    3. Signal booster - Expensive? Perhaps. Worth it? Absolutely. These solutions will amplify the received signal. Turning three bars into five, no problem.
    All the best.

The thicker the coax the lower the loss. USE NO MORE THAN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, IT'LL SAVE A BUCKET ON BOOSTERS AND GIVE RECIPROCITY: UP AND DOWN SIMILAR. AT the high frequencies cell signals work at, reducing cable loss is paramount. (old radio tech)

QUESTION: The power pole you have your wireless internet modem antennas on, does the transformer on that power pole have a ground wire from the top of the pole coming down and into the ground to a copper ground lead at the base of the pole ?
If if does, then you need to put a lightening surge protector on those antenna wires coming into your modem, to keep lightening strikes on the lines connected to the top of that pole from following your antenna wires into your home and burning out your equipment.

@@life.uncontained Opensignal only shows towers that have been mapped by a device on that brand. so unless someone with a pink device has been running the app while cruzing in your neighborhood they wont have anything, only a guesstimate based on signal strenght. Use that to find the actual tower on a sat map and then point your antennas based on that new information. The receiver wont update its signal fast enough to get more than general hand aiming. you might try doing that with only one antenna and then addiing the second afterwards.

Internet bandwidth is not a measurement of speed, it is a measurement of volume.
You are not measuring how fast the data gets to you, but how much data gets to you per unit time (DATA AMOUNT per SECOND).
It is not how fast the water flows over the waterfall, but how MUCH flows over every second.
Stop calling it 'speed'. Speed is also known as 'latency', or the time it takes for signals to travel along the medium (be it a wire or the air), and it is measured in milliseconds.

Put a add or check on Craigslist in your area. Many homes have now gone to cable in town. many also have TV antenna towers from before. In most cases you can get them for free. Sometimes you may have too take them down yourself. All you will need is a grinder/cutter. of some kind to cut the old bolts off. Attaching A pulley on a chain to hang from the tower bracket that is highest point on the house, 2 Ropes one in the pulley for lowering 2nd for directing the tower away from power lines or other buildings, will let you bring it down safely , Use a hydraulic jack and 2 boards to separate tower sections for hauling away after you cut off the old bolts that is I hpoe this helps. I lve in the boonies too And this is what I did. lol

Inquire with T-Mobile where the nearest tower is and ask if the would consider putting a tower out on your property for you and your neighbors. There’s financial advantages to having a provider lease property for their towers. 😀
I would think you metal roof would cause attenuation (signal grounding). That’s why you get better reception off of the pole.

Well I didn’t know about that, makes sense.

      @bruno-vicious 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@charlesmasclef1309 a phone has a fixed antenna and circuitry that you cannot change. Phones are designed with an assumption that you will be near a tower. In this couple's case they aren't using a phone. They are using a MoFi router with directional antennas designed to pick up long distant signals from far away. Depending on their setup (positioning, type of antenna, elevation, feed line and amplifier) they can improve their signal reception. They said in their video that they were going to do research to help improve their signal reception. However we haven't seen any update on their internet setup and whether or not they've made improvements. I personal was considering an off the grid setup in the future. So knowing what worked and didn't work would definitely help someone like me have an idea of what I can do for myself in the future for an off the grid internet solution.

The options you have for Internet Off Grid
    1. Contact the local Cellular Provider, if they would install a Commercial Cellular Tower on your property
In the Cities, they pay building owners to install these Cellular Towers everywhere to increase their signal
    2. A telescopic Pole for the current range Extender you have
    3. Satellite Internet which you said you don't prefer
    4. Fixed Terminal inside your house (for all Telephony services) that uses a GSM card. So this is after you have resolved the reception issue outside. Fixed Terminals would work mostly like a wired landline phone or wired Ethernet Router for the PC + Router Wifi inside your house. Will fix the white spot reception problem
    5. Once you have decided on your Internet provider (see also option 6 below) you can use Magic Jack or netTALK for VOIP Line
    unlimited minutes north America
    6. Laptops and PC can use a GSM adapter to receive internet via Cellular connection, to avoid additional service
Example, if you get a family plan from T-Mobile (4 lines ), so that 4 GSM cards, you can use the other 3 or 2 for the PCs (1 Desktop + 1 Laptop)
FYI - Both Magic Jack and netTALK give you an App on your smart device to receive the VOIP line calls (and make the VOIP line calls) from your Smart device, usually iPHONE devices or ANDROID, but now Windows Moble
    Love your videos

They look like the external antennas I have. With that said, mine are directional. I used them while camping. Don't remember the site but you can look up the exact location of cell towers from where you are and what service provider comes from that tower. But try all options, I have Verizon , but in some cases I got better wifi pointed at an AT&T tower. Lol. And yet sometimes I got better service pointed up at 30° just over the tree line. Good luck

How about an update on this video? Also a humble suggestion from the King’s #1Fool: Get an aluminum pole, attach the antennas while on the ground, then pick it up, and raise up against the existing pole (“higher, no even higher” 😃) and attach it.

It's not about the bars, it's about the quality of the signal.
Had to get that off my chest.

Hi guys, been watching a few of your videos and they've been very entertaining. Thought I'd throw in some food for thought. I've got background in sat and cell tech and one of the factors in setup has always been line of sight. Whether it's been tree branches or structures, pointing to a tower or satellite always had best results when the line of sight is unhindered. If it were me setting up for signal, I'd find out the direction of your tower/towers, and position your antenna so there are the least amount of interference, preferably a mount with no inference. Your signal will probably not get any better than the three bars but that's just the nature of the beast but you can at least reduce, say, swaying branch interruptions. Hope that helps even if a little.

A cellular extender might be a good investment for this setup.
It would gather & amplify the signal so you should get way better reception.

Hey guys, this is a very old video and I assume you already either fixed your reception issues or have other things more important in hand, either way few suggestions. Find a way to mount the router closest to the antennas. Unless you ordered some extremely expensive coax cables, the attenuation will be severe and most of the signal you would be picking up with those antennas will be lost in the cable. Just get the router up there and the run an ethernet cable back to the barn where you can attach another router to it for wireless. If you turn off DHCP on the second router and attach the cable from the first one to the second on the LAN ports, your first router would be able to handle IPs seamlessly, so it would be like you are attached directly to the providers router.

Power wires can conflict with the tower signal fyi. It would be better to have the internet away from any power wires. Maybe have a dedicated pole for internet?

You do know some companies will pay you to use your land to put a cell tower up with the approval of the town of course. It wouldnt hurt to look into it. It may give you free service. Yet again if they are paying then most your expenses for intenet or other things might be free. Its an option.

Who does your aerial photography and what do they use? I see that it's super stable and crystal clear. I know that there are some relatively inexpensive drones and Gopro clones that almost anyone can fly successfully. That place is really beautiful. Do NOT allow the stress of what you are doing affect your health and relationship. I know from experience that it can work on you. So keep that communication open and realize you will get through this stronger and wiser.

Ouch! I'm lucky enough to be in a service area of a dedicated link wireless provider. Have an oval BBQ grill type microwave dish mounted to my cargo container. Service is solid as a rock, even in a major white out blizzard. I pay $39.95 a month flat rate for a data cap free 2 meg link. My entire system with WiFi router uses 28 Watts.

Big fan of the channel! Our house burned in a big fire last year and we bought a chunk of land to start over and are living off grid. We started a TH-cam channel - it’s brand new. Uploading media has been a HUGE challenge. Are you still happy with UnlimitedVille?

Since you guys should get the TV off the grid too check out Tiger Stream or Free Stream. All you need is wireless internet the box and HDMI cable which they provide and you will be truly off the grid with all the TV services you could want for free, all you do is pay one time for the box and it is totally legal too.

Q/A. I may have missed the video where you discuss buying the property but I'll ask anyway. Apparently there used to be a house on that property. Have you checked for a septic tank or did you already install one? Have you checked to see if there is a well? Don't be like that city in Saudi Arabia that but a beautiful city but forgot to install a sewage system.

Look into going with Tmoibile directly, we have the Tmobile One plan in a family plan configuration, its only $90/month for 3 lines for us with autopay, the 3rd line is used for hotspot only. At our property we installed a RV mobile data range extended kit we bought and it increased service to all our phones, but we get unlimited 3g in hotspot mode up to 12-15down/3-5upload. If we want to watch a youtube or netflix since its free on our tmobile plan we get to stream it unlimited 4g/lte speeds as long as we hard lock the resolution to 480p on the phone. we both have Samsung S9's and we bought one of the Samsung Dex docking stations which turns our tv into a computer basically, we set the resolution to 480p in the settings and we can watch unlimited youtube and netflix at that resolution, which honestly is just as clear as standard cable tv. So we signed up for youtube tv and watch it in 480p for free at 4g/lte speeds, the 3g connection limits us to 720p res on youtube and netflix and occasionally cuts out, so getting the more dependable viewing on 480p in the dock is way better. Also the Samsung S9 is able to edit videos while docked into the Dex pretty dang well, faster than our laptop when we post them ourselves. The big thing on the Tmobile One plan is the 480p resolution, when we first started using it we racked up like 90gb of 4g lte and they throttled our 4g/lte and gave us a call about excess use.. the customer service rep explained to us the 480p resolution is the max res on unlimited streaming of youtube, netflix, and audio streams without counting towards us. above that counts toward getting throttle cap

Check into NetBuddy. $100 hot-spot modem (you can buy from Amazon), $70 a month for unlimited, LTE data....I get 20-50mbps depending on time of day. Enough to stream HD TV, and stream to as many devices as I want through a wireless router.
