    I travelled this road every day for two years, bringing back some memoires. Love the Falklands

    I ran this road with a couple of other lads back in 1990 in military kit when it was just compacted dirt. Took us about 15 hours to do.

      There has been a programme over the last few years to tarmac a bit more each year and eventually the whole thing will be done, which will be quite a change from what you remember!
      (Thanks for the comment and sorry for taking so long to reply!)

    The Falklands are much flatter and larger than I thought. It must be strange for a migrating bird to suddenly fly over a giant wet prairie in the middle of the ocean.

      They're about the size of Yorkshire for UK watchers and between Rhode Island and Connecticut in size for US watchers

    Was looking for the halfway house , sure there was a pub on the way - no tarmac un the 80s barely any road tbh lol
    Went to MPA for a football tournament.....fun times

    Looks like its been made a lot better, it was just a dirt track back in the 90's when I was there with McNicholas.

      There's a programme to tarmac the whole road from Stanley to Mount Pleasant - there's been more tarmac laid since this was made, including another 2+ miles completed so far in 20/21!

  • @WayneBotto
    @WayneBotto 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wait, they have trees now.....and tarmac roads. Have they cleared the minefields that used to straddle the dirt track when I was there in 1990.

    • @rmbflk
      @rmbflk  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I haven't done the remake yet, so it doesn't show that the tarmac now runs the whole way from Stanley to MPA
      Still not many trees, but no landmines: the roadside minefields were cleared early in the demining programme and the very last one was ceremonially blown up in late 2020

      @rmbflk Thanks for the reply, MPA wasn't my favourite detachment but I've often wondered about revisiting. I might look into it before I get too old. If I do I will definitely want to drive that road!

      The tarmac should be finished this year or next - a lot has been put down since this was filmed
      As for funding, it comes out of the Falkland Islands Government capital programme, which is funded by local taxation and fisheries revenue

    How many miles of tarmac have they been averaging each year? And have they laid down anymore for the 21/22 season yet?

    • @rmbflk
      @rmbflk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They’ve been laying more tarmac each summer and the road is finally due to be tarmac throughout by the end of this summer (23/24) … then, they will start repairing the older tarmac!

    Do they have trees? No plantation here. What happened?

    • @rmbflk
      @rmbflk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Trees just don’t thrive naturally in the wind here - there are two plantations I know of, but neither is on the MPA road

  • @jimwolfgram5022

    Once they finish the tarmac to MPA will they continue on to Goose Green?

    • @rmbflk
      @rmbflk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First priority will be repairing/replacing some of the older tarmac - there is talk of carrying on to GG and New Haven for the ferry to the West (but no specific plan)

    • @rmbflk

      No fixed cameras, but there are sometimes police checks that do catch people not sticking to the 40mph limit! (Only military vehicles have speed limiters!)

    • @rogerphillips7270

      40 mph is a low speed limit for such a road. In the UK it would be 60
