I remember this well. Many a time I went to Plumstead market. We walked about 3 miles (up a hill and then down to Plumstead) and, of course, the walk back but this time laden. My friend and I walked everywhere just to save money - which we didn’t have. A rare treat was a piece of cold fish (left over from lunch) from the fish and chip shop.
We didn’t know it but life was about to become easier for shoppers. Supermarkets, now everywhere, were just coming in. Instead of traipsing around half a dozen shops buying milk, bread, potatoes and vegetables, we got it all in one shop.

The year I was born, but Londoners even talk differently then compared with now.

The past is a foreign country, people do things differently there.
