    I love this proud farmer. He is so skilled and builds wonderful shelters for all his animals.
    He is not slick so he can be corny sometimes but that is nice alternative to my NYC crankiness.
    He obviously loves his life even though it is not easy and requires lots of attention.
    The strongest proof of his sanity and goodness us the fact the his cats love him.

    I think the bard rock coup might have really bright morning sunshine hitting the nesting boxes right when the girls need to lay their eggs. Perhaps that is why they seek out that darker small corner on the ground to lay in. Just a thought. 😊

    I had the same problem with that feeder with my large hard rock rooster, always cutting himself and bleeding change Feed feeders, get those dividers out of the way so they can eat freely and you’ll solve the problem. Beautiful roosters.😊

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So you think it was the feeder that made him bleed? It was a lot of blood though. I’ve never had an issue with the feeder before so I just figured the two roosters had a fight. I’ll have to keep an eye on it and change feeders if I need to. I wouldn’t have even thought that so thnx for the heads up 👍

      Interesting. That could explain a lot of past happenings. I considered just getting the roosters a big rubber bowl because they look awkward eating out of the feeder.

    Hey! I’m here in Normandy, TN. My husband & I have farmed all our lives & we’re both raised by grandparents born in 1903, my great grandfather lived until I was 8 years old. I was taught the ways! There is nothing like laying hens & the sound of the rooster crowing to make a farm come alive! My chickens are Buff Orpingtons. Please take a look at these gentle giants. We keep bees here at the farm. This is a very special experience. Glad we found your channel.

    The Barred Rock roosters may not be fighting. We’ve had this same thing happen to us in all four pens and there was only one rooster in each. We think it was the feeder doing it. It doesn’t happen to the hens. When our roosters are separated from the flock they get a feed bowl.

    I raised a chicken from an Easter baby . I loved him sooo much he would sit in our laps and coooo and chuckle he didn't crow and got along with our cat. Is that unusual ? He ended up going to a lady that lived in the country and had a lot of chickens and a big coop. In my opinion he was a wonderful pet and showed love in return in his chickenee way. Miss him still.😪

    I love your octagonal chicken coop… it’s so damn cool! You should be very proud of it! If I were you, I would draw up blueprints for it and sell them! It’s really a unique chicken coop…
    Those bard rocks are notorious for fighting… we raised Rhode Island Reds and Leghorns… there was some interbreeding between the two and that was interesting lol…. The crossbred hens layed a lot more eggs than the pure bred birds…
    I had a HUGE RI Red Rooster that I called Big Red… I raised him from a hatchling and he was the sweetest boy, unlike his daddy who I nearly killed with a golf club for attacking me every time I went out to collect eggs… I despised that bird lol…. He never attacked me after I clocked him with a nine iron… lol…. But Big Red was just a sweetheart…. He replaced his daddy after he went to chicken heaven… my dad's Brittany spaniel caught him when he got out of the coop and made a meal out of him… but Big Red would come to me whenever I would whistle for him… he liked to be held and scratched and petted… the hens, not so much but they did like to be petter, not held….

    4:50. That always happens you get roosters you dont want. 10:00. Feed quality could be the problem for feather eating or space as both are worsened in winter. There is a guy that sells live mealworms at good prices locally near me. That would give the birds a protein boost. I may try farming mealworms next year it is supposed to be easy. 11:30. Aggressive rooster is a must if the birds are free ranging and not locked up at night. Bigger birds like orpingtons helps too. If you want cheap eggs you need plenty of pasture to roam. Clover seed is cheap and a no brainer if you have birds. White dutch is good for cold areas I still have green clover the birds are eating. Oyster shell is gross shellfish is contaminated with all the toxic sludge of the bays and coastline. Nothing works as good or as cheap as the egg shells and the layer pellets are high in calcium.

  • @ZippedUpKitz
    @ZippedUpKitz 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What do you use for calcium supplements? We used oyster shells… one thing you can use, egg shells! You can grind up your used eggs shells and mix it into their feed…. Recycling is awesome lol

  • @sunnyday5621
    @sunnyday5621 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That was a fun video. Did you know that if you keep the chicken feed in the coop with the chickens, the chickens will eat any live mice that come in the coop? The Rhode Island Reds are especially good mousers. Also, feather loss can be an indication of a higher protein is needed in their feed. Hens will start plucking other chickens for the protein in the feathers. They enjoy alfalfa has as a high protein supplement and it is a cheap alternative chicken feed. One slice in a hay feeder like you have for the Bunnies will last a week or two. You don't want to just throw it in, because they WILL poop on it and make it uneatable. The alfalfa also has good minerals for them. (Old farmer tricks.) Also rule of thumb, a minimum of 6 hens per rooster or the roosters will fight and they will eventually get aggressive toward the hens also.

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t know about the alfalfa thing I can try that maybe, haven’t seen anything like that at our local feed store. The thing about the feather loss due to lack or protein though wouldn’t it affect all the birds and not just one or two?

    • @sunnyday5621
      @sunnyday5621 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HiddenSpringFarm The chickens higher on the pecking order pluck from lower ones. so, no not all of them would show it. I would check with your farmers around your area for a small square alfalfa bale. The feed stores usually don't carry them. Some of the ranch supply stores may. But the farmers would be your best bet.

    Another great video.
    I keep a dish of oyster shells and grit. They have free choice to go grab some anytime they need some.
    Since adding the oyster shells the egg shells are so much harder to Crack lol but in a good way. Moisture is my biggest battle, but they have very deep bedding now, and they will routinely dig 18" down and search I guess for bugs, or a way to get out.
    My girls get a little bit of Oatmeal in the morning, just after they finisg laying their eggs, and at coop closing they get a few baked beans. They go nuts for them!
    So far we only have lost one hen, and she was a very loud one who used to throw herself at the doors, and yell all day. I don't know why, but on Christmas Eve she was dead. The coop is much quieter without her, so hopefully they are all less stressed.
    Thanks for showing the rooster clip! I'm a little nervous about getting a rooster, so I'm holding off about it.
    Oh, mine won't lay in the boxes either. Two were and now they are all laying in a hole they dig out. 😂

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So they’ll just eat the shells by themselves not mixed in the feed?

    • @KateMedland
      @KateMedland 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HiddenSpringFarm
       yes! They are pretty amazing at knowing exactly what they need. Put the shells in a bowl or raised up feeders so they don't just scatter them. They will eat a lot of it the first few days and then you can monitor how much they eat after that. They will slow down to a steady amount.
      Same with grit (small rocks that they used to help digest their food)
      Free choice!
      You can also put special mineral and sea salts out and they will eat them. I get them here in Nova Scotia saying they are for dogs, but the chickens eat a bit of them for extra minerals when they need them.

    If you separate the rooster it may be harder to put them together again. I would put the two roosters together without the hens or a visual of any hens. That way they can maybe work out their pecking order. Or they will kill each other. I had a rooster that was being pecked to an open wound. I separated him, and after two fly strikes I got him healed. Put him back and now she leaves him alone. I think they needed a change of habit without blood being involved.

    • @HiddenSpringFarm

      The barred rock roo with the damage won’t be rejoining his flock as I only intend to keep one rooster per flock, they were just growing up together but I guess now they’re full adults and will constantly fight. Chickens sure are relentless eh.

    I have been thinking the Bardrock Rooster should be named Johnny Cash since you mentioned them awhile ago. Though if you have two roosters maybe give both 2 hens? This way one is not left out? Not sure what to name the second one though. Willie Nelson? If you like country music ohhh maybe Mozart? I do hope Big Red gets better and the hens stop hurting him. If he is ill that may be why he is being picked on. My parents raised chickens for a long time when they first moved to the farm. They don't anymore due to the age but chickens are beautiful creatures.
    P.S. I love the Claw Crew. They are what brought me to your channel.
