    From Leo: Interesting engine swap. Looks like fun. I put a Turbo Volvo 4 cylinder in a Spitfire 30 years ago. The Rear end on the Spitfire is made for maybe 50 hp. I broke 4 of them before I gave up on that project. The axle hubs break loose from the rear axles and the pinion gear comes apart like a hand grenade with serious torque. It was a blast to drive when it did not require to be towed home. The pulley drive may prevent the mechanical shock that breaks parts. Keep having fun!

  • @thnksno
    @thnksno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Your gear ratio is going to be dependent upon whether or not the sled CVT achieves 1:1 ratio. Remember it's torque sensing and set for a much lighter load and application. So you're likely going to need to work with springs and weights in the primary and secondary clutches.

    • @bluereaper6.472
      @bluereaper6.472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This would explain why it runs bad to. Snowmobiles are dialed for the clutches and if they arnt just right u will see some big problems in performance. Like if the center to center is wrong like it looks like it is the belt will slip then graph and drag the engine down. Or if the springs are wrong again like they are it will not hold the belt. They need to have someone make custom springs weights and ramps for them ie a pain in the ass or see if a side by side clutch could be used as they are more heavy duty and would work much better do to being closer to what it was made to do.

    • @thnksno
      @thnksno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bluereaper6.472 To their credit with this build, a bare bone rolling spitfire doesn't weigh a lot. So they will probably be able to find a combination of aftermarket parts that work. I think they maintained the same CTC with a bar or cut the bulkhead of the sled out. I don't remember. Further, the gear case they have after the CVT will have a direct effect on launch and top end. I would sort out the CVT and ensure full shift out (on polaris sheaves it's actually 1.1:1, yamaha may too, I said 1:1 earlier) then tweak the gear ratio for a good launch and top end.

    • @bluereaper6.472
      @bluereaper6.472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thnksno I wonder if a good clutch kit would help going to be hard to get the springs right tho. It's not just me that thinks the belt looked like it was way to far down idk much about Yamaha clutches but I have a artic cat 1100 and I am a brp mechanic but that just might be how they do it. Or it could have broken rollers... really big skidoo problem lol

    • @thnksno
      @thnksno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bluereaper6.472 Yeah the belt looked a bit floppy, they may have pulled it up while working on it. I don't think a kit will work as they're tuned sled specific. I'm a hobbyist sledder that'll take your $100 on the lake. This build though, I can only guess as to the best course to tune. Sleds come new dialed pretty good, so all you need to do is decide what you want it to do better. Simply adding studs to a sled increases the weight of a the drive train, requiring clutch adjustment, unless you don't know or care. Adding the weight of a car driveshaft, differential and 2 wheels with tires, I don't know without seeing what might happen.

    • @bluereaper6.472
      @bluereaper6.472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thnksno kits arnt sled specific atleast not a 1 sled 1 setup tuned for just that sled. Just need the right ramps weights springs and helix for the sled and what u do with it. We do 100s every winter for off trail and so people can go out west. People always forget to change the clutch settings for elevation and cant understand why at 10000 ft the things a dog all the sudden lol.

  • @liljohnp132
    @liljohnp132 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the 80s I put a Buick 215 aluminum v8 in a 67 spitfire. I had an Audi 100LS transaxle in the rear (like a Porsche 828) to handle the 140ish hp. Had to lengthen the frame 4 inches to keep it under the stock bonnet, and avoid cutting out most of the firewall. Your engine is a lot better, and you will have to put a different rear end in it (unless you always drive dirt roads with no traction). I have heard subaru rear ends are the best for high power spitfires

      @@jmyers9853 I was also thinking.. why not just use the part off tool in the first place? I love these guys but I feel they could do with a couple of hours in a machine shop with some lathe 101's.. things like turning down rough-cut circle will take 1/10th the time of turning down a square

    I know it's easier just to use the factory clutch etc, but I feel that this could do with a manual box. With the fab skills you guys have I'm sure you could make, say, a Toyota 5 speed box (W5#) work there. They're relatively cheap and pretty strong. It'd sort out your problems with gearing too.
