All religions tell you if you believe in their god, obey his laws, do good deeds, pray hard, have faith, etc. you will be blessed by that god. He will protect you and won't let you suffer. Buddhism is the only belief system that tells you the harsh realities of life. Buddha is not a god whom you can pray to for blessings and protection. He is the enlightened one. It's like everyone is sick and someone discovers a herb that can cure. He tests it on himself and is cured. So he shares it with everyone. But the sick person must take the herb himself. The Buddha says life is suffering. When there's happiness, there's sadness. When there's gain, there is loss. Your body gives your pleasure (seeing nice things, enjoying nice music, eating good food, etc.) but also gives you sufferings - sickness, pain, old age, etc.. I don't have children so I won't have pains of losing a child. I'm not married so I won't agonize over a divorce. I don't own a big house so I won't feel sad if I go bankrupt and have to live in a small apartment. Everyone suffers - losing a loved ones, pain, hunger, fear, sickness, old age, death - most powerful people, rich people, poor people, Jesus, Mary, the Buddha, bad people, good people, white people, master, slave, saints, etc..
