+Roger Leslie Wet pine is sure different to turn, I can tell you that :) Actually is very pleasant on the gouge, and it's not as sappy as I expected it to be, so that's good... but it's so full of water it weighs so much! but I sure like a refreshing shower with each cut in the hot shop, so it's a win/win :)

Great video! I made a doumbek in college on a potter's wheel and stretched lamb skin for the head. I think I'm going to try this. Thanks for the inspiration!
+Pedalz Workshop Thanks Pedalz, now making a drum on a potter's wheel is also something that can work, I guess... :) I was thinking to use goat skin, I'm no expert, and this is my first drum, but I've learned goat skin is thinner and is preferred for this type of drum... can't wait to finish this shell and let it dry so I could skin and string it! If you're going to try this too, hook me up with some pictures man, or even a video!!
You're right, I used goat skin. It's been almost 20 years since I made it. Sheepskin is good for other implements. Looking forward to the next video. Keep on turnin!
You my friend are one brave soul, my heart was in my mouth watching that massive hunk of wood spinning on a lathe similar to my old lathe, that wouldn't have seen anything half that size! I can't tell you how many people sent me stuff saying I ruined their lathe after my upgrade video. That is one very large piece of timber. It looked quite big when you started outside as I could see it was at least knee height. It wasn't until you placed it on the lathe that you could really see how big it is.
Yeah, just lifting it and putting it between centers was a fight... it was 60 Kilos (about 132 pounds) when I chucked it up for the first time. Quite a bit more then my wife!! :) Yuval.
I can see that this is going to take you a while to finish this drum. Next time you should try making a smaller drum and cut down on some of the heavy work. I wouldn't mind having a smaller drum that I could give to my grand daughter for her next birthday. She plays the drums and is really good at it too.
+RoxyIB I can promise you Roxy, that unless I'll have 6000 Euro drop on me from nowhere to get a new and bigger lathe, my next drum will be smaller, which I fully intend on making. I was trying this out since I couldn't contain the need to make this large one, but once out of the system, I'll be back to things more fitting my lathe and the size of my shop, which also gives me a little bit of trouble. @@feurbie Thank you! My lathe is only 1/2 a horse power string. the same model of lathe in the UK is 3/4 horse power. for a lathe this size it's a very weak motor, I would really love a 2 to 3 horse power lathe...

Wha hooo. Yep that is entirely too big for the lathe LOL. Pushing the envelope is the polite way to say it. I didn't mean for you to use the chainsaw while it was on the lathe. You take it off and cut in around the bottom of the bowl then cut from the bottom to the relief cut at the bowl. gets rid of a lot of weigh then your roughing a piece that is muc smaller and easier to turn. My last lathe had the same pulley arrangement (but was a 16 inch) and I only got it to slow down about 50 rpm with the short belt trick. On my old channel when I had a log on the lathe I had already hollowed the bowl and rough shaped the outside with chainsaw and side grinder. It reduced the weight enough that 500 rpm wasn't quite so scary. Looks like you are well on the way with this one though, just take it easy and remain cautious of it, you'll be fine..

Well, I'm glad something worked, since I've been getting problems from youtube in the past month too, but it seems to be working well right now. This is my first ever Djembe, and I hope it will go alright. I'm planning to make the shell and let it dry, and when ready I will skin and string it and tune it. for this project I'm learning all these skills, so I hope it will amount to something in the end :)
+Yuval Lahav I would love to see this entire process, I have a drum that was made out of mango wood and carved and never thought about how out was made but this has really piqued my interest. did you turn it green? Or is it just that big that you have to wait for it to dry fully?
It's as fresh as it can get, the log came to me about an hour after it was cut down, it's like taking a shower with each pass of the gouge. You should know that it's not that common for these Djembe to be made on the lathe, traditionally they are carved, but we're man of the machine!! so why not? :)
