Her biggest issue is she doesn’t train her voice. Trust me, if she did she would be amazed at what she’s still capable of. But her process of resting for a period then vocalising and seeing what she’s got on any given day is what is giving her such an unpredictable instrument. There’s no foundation
I was actually very surprised when I first heard this performance because I quickly realized that she seems to have almost completely stopped that staccato-singing style she was so fond of in the past few years; she seems to really have regained some semblance of legato. Not sure what caused that issue in the first place, but I'm happy it's now a thing of the past...hopefully. : )

Her rehearsal sounded much better. 😢I was a bit let down during the whole performance. She had some good moments, but for the most part, I expected her to sound much more healthy and fluid than she did given her recent interviews and twitter spaces. I’ll love her no matter what. 💛

I appreciate this analysis. Her lower register is still in good shape and she still has the ability to do fluid runs. Her upper chest register is still disconnected and staccato-like. Often time she stops and starts singing multiple times in the same phrase. This is probably the nodules causing this. I agree, proper breath support and increased fitness will definitely help with this. I remember in 2005-2010 when she was in great shape and it really helped with her upper belting. On a side note, the upper ascending head voice run on “whose” was spectacular, and definitely live. The highest she’s gone on that word probably ever.
I think she still has it, her quarantine performances showed that. She just seems to be her worst enemy at times. The corsets, the breath control etc. It still amazes me that even in current voice she’s never compared to anyone else except her younger self.
At this point in her career I’d love it if she just did at home performances like she did during quarantine those were great and received positive reactions from fans and the general public 👏🏼 I get that she gets paid more at these big events but she rarely ever sings well at them unfortunately.
I think she just had her voice tired that day but she had to make it through the show! And that happens when we have to do a show that was previously scheduled and we have no choice!

People tend to forget the nodules. A lot of people lose their voice to it. For her to have sang like she's done for as long, its impressive. It's not just a get fit and everything will be okay thing
Then she was nervous, too, and I think being can affect your voice too, and with her having nodules, it probably effect her more than others who don't have them
I'm a huge lamb myself and this wasn't her best performance but not her worst either. She just needs to rehearse more and alter the keys and I think she'd per perfect (or close to it). I've seen her live twice in the last 10 years and she can definitely still sing regardless of her naysayers!
Now this is realistic. Thank you for being honest this time. That being said, I just wish Mariah would seek help from professionals. I really think this can be fixed if only she put in some effort and stop excessive alcohol intake! Losing weight would be helpful too. That corset is probably too tight. One thing about Mariah is that she hates being told what to do (If you've read her memoir, it is quite evident). Having said that, I am not sure how this would work out for her. If she's not willing to take vocal training seriously, I think it's better she avoid big events like this altogether. I can just imagine the stress.
You’re absolutely right and I’m a lamb, but you have to start taking your craft more seriously. As fans we can’t enable the behavior and ignore certain trends. She has gained weight, she doesn’t like working out so that’s the cardio right there. She hasn’t been working with a vocal coach, and her memoir does show that she does like to do things her way which isn’t necessarily bad if you don’t have bad habits.

when mariah sounds like this it’s because she is vocally tired. she said in a twitter space recently she is working on a “inspirational” album (gospel) and has been using her voice a lot when she should be resting for upcoming performances (global citizens festival). this means she’s been in the studio recently rather than strict vocal rest, which explains the vocal fatigue here. I think your analysis is very harsh and delusive but considering you’re not a die hard fan, it’s expected. this clearly is mariah not at her best but now you know the reasoning. I thought y’all would’ve learned by now, don’t ever count mariah out! she always comes back better than ever. christmas time is approaching❤️
What I respect so much about Mariah, and I don't believe many people see it the same way, is that she doesn't usually even attempt it if she doesn't think she can do a decent go at it. So she ducks notes, changes things up seemingly on the fly and does about the best she can, but you don't hear a ton of bum notes because she just ducks the note if she thinks she can't hit it. some people hate that, but I admire it. She's lost portions of her voice obviously and is out of shape so struggling a lot of the time to perform well, but her mind and incredible knowledge of vocal performance remains every bit as great as it ever was.
I chose to use this one, as often the one uploaded on official youtube accounts have had the sound improved. This way I could know exactly what she sound was like on the day
I feel like her instrument has changed, if she can get with someone that can guide her with using what she has to work with . It might not be her 1995 instrument. But a better understanding of what she still has, she will adapt and overcome ! It will sound new and different but we won’t be clinging on to a memory of what she “used” to have! It will be embracing her newness ! She will always have my heart!
There is a lot of word "shame" in a reaction. She is already 53 years old, her body is worn out, and it will only get worse. But each of us comes to this sooner or later.

She sounded a lot better in the rehearsals. What the hell happened?. She needs vocal sessions immediately. Maybe stage fright got the better of her. She sounded so tired and out of breath. Hopefully she has better days in the future.

I'm confused as to why you're commenting as if her voice is permanently going to be in this current state? She was clearly having a bad vocal day when even her speaking voice was rapsy.
The dryness is definitely from the nodules (which is what wear and tear is). It used to be something that you only noticed at the very top of her range, but by the late 2000s it was present more and more. Now her belts sometimes are almost all rasp. Interesting texture, but difficult to fit into her song catalogue. The nodules have even started to affect her whistles, you'll notice she's sounding polyphonic. Maybe the nodules could be reduced in size and hardness instead of removed completely? I'm sure Mariah would kill for even her 2000s voice condition. And yes, she needs to do some cardio. So many of her songs rely on immense breathe control. If her technique needs more breath now, he needs to get fitter to find that breath.
I think it has a lot to do with her being nervous and possibly the why she sounds dry because y'all forget her natural singing voice is a alto, and all her soprano notes come from nodules so her being nerves might effect her voice more then a person who doesn't have nodules also she was doing a lot of very high notes to promote Christmas and Halloween so I don't know if that was done during the time she was preparing for this performance but God knows how many times she hit those notes to make her video they was she wanted it
On MC, I love her, (not as much as Whitney) but MC has said herself her voice isn't consistent. Also, if you've ever watched any of her tv series, she always has a glass of wine in her hand (which is totally fine) but we all know alcohol dehydrates the voice. She could definitely benefit from bringing some of the songs down a semitone or so
I missed the old Mariah, without all that make up, that tigh & heavy dresses, extreme high heels. The only things would matter in past was her vocals, her talent...
I think at this point she needs to realize she needs help, go see a vocal doctor, remove her nodules, take a long break to rest and rehabilitate her voice, and then make regular visits to cheryl porter for vocal coaching. That’s the only way.
I’m a HVC fan. I’ve never seen her this harsh in her feedback but as a lamb I must say I agreed with most of the feedback. But overall I enjoyed the performance I wish HVC would have pulled out the greater moments.
So, I think she needs to have some voice sessions to refresh her technique. Even here mouth and placement of the notes are lazy. Is it pride? Get fit. Take a refresher course. Relearn where to place the notes. Consider Botox injects into the chords to see if there is improvement.
Mariah said during the pandemic she got her voice back... she was singing live at home 🏡 and doing well.... so to me she sounded underneath the weather or maybe she had one too many splashes 😄

The problem with Mariah is that she urgently needs vocal rehab but she seems to entitled, and all the DiVA attitude, don't allow her to see her faults, it's not just about the nodules, her technique became poorer, she really some vocal workout
We don’t know what her routine is, but the evidence is clear in how she sounds that she doesn’t take care of her voice in the way she should. I think some of that will be ego, but she’ll lose it completely if she continues singing in this way.

Lupus isn't Nodules, Toni isn't globally demanded as much as Mariah, Toni never sung as vocally taxing songs as Mariah, nor does Toni have the range of Mariah, etc. I love Toni's voice don't get me wrong but don't compare apples with oranges. I do agree though that Mariah should take better care of her voice and maybe choose and schedule her live appearances more carefully. She doesn't need to attend any shows she doesn't want to, so I don't get why she does performances to then seem to be unprepared or too nervous or whatever the issue may be and then underperform... Anyway, she does still show some genius here and there when she is well rested and in a comfortable space.

I think at this point her best option is to let those nodules be removed. Yes she has to start finding her voice again with training, but atleast it will sound a lot better than now.
Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy listening Mariah live anymore, because I am constantly worrying if her voice gonna crack if she can make it. She really can’t sing the way she could. The thing is that she doesn’t move me in live performances, I think that the main focus in lives is on how she gonna sing, if she is getting better and sounds like she used to.
I was in the audience, it was a wonderful time and New York was showing Mariah a lot of love. However; I agree with your analysis. Her voice is not there but her confidence is. Still waiting for her new album. I gradually think Mariah should be a “studio singer”. Her voice is not consistent anymore but she still has it, which means she could still make a good studio project when she is on her good days.

Mariah's vocal peak was WAY before 30 years old or even that age range. Mariah peaked in the early 90's then her voice went downhill after 96. She started using prerecorded live vocals in her performances as far back as 97 when she 'sang' Hero on Oprah. Very noticeable change of vocals during that 97 Hero 'performance', especially on the bridge. #honestvocalcoach singing has never been easy for Mariah. She's always looked uncomfortable performing live. She's by NO MEANS the Greatest Female Singer. Sorry sister. Mariah was never even close to Whitney Houston live on her best day. Same thing with Celine Dion. Mariah's more of a studio Singer with some stand out live moments.

Love me some Mariah. But I agree her recent performances seem dry and we always point it out to her nerves or her nodules. Given that she was on a long rest for the past few years, she could have work on her stage presence and possibly do trainings with a vocal coach. She always seem out of breath when singing. I remember she used to swim a lot and exercise hence, her stamina was on point before. I love Mariah and I hope she look after herself more.

I think theres a correlation between the agility of her voice and her arm and hand gestures. Mariah guides her notes with her hands, always has. But back in the day the gestures used to be bigger her hands were flat and the runs were smoother. These days she sticks out her index finger and does tiny aggressive chopping motions and her runs turn into staccato breaks..

this was not good. You cant see it on this recording but the dress is really not helping her. Too tight. Vocally has potential and moments but needs way more practice to get better. Loads of lipping is not helping her as how do you build up any flow. We have to take the long break into account. And i think she is a heavily nervous singer thats voice is easily impacted. its like this performance was nothing in comparison to some of the 2019 christmas dates. i personally will give her time but i know others wont. which i think is justified at this point.

The problem with Mariah Carey she have vocal cord nodules, she said the doctor recommended not to remove them. It sad, she won't sing her prime year hits like she used to. She can't give a great performance live anymore.

This is probably just that she was so nervous the day before that she did not sleep well, then on top of being tired she was suuuuper nervous, because of all the scrutiny on her voice and her stage fright, so her thraot closes. What I don't get is how she doesn't manage to take some sleeping pills or something to keep her damn nervousness under control after aaaall these years. It's like she has this self-sabotage thing we all have, me included, where you do worst when you have to do best. Then you hear her in an insignificant event and she sounds amazing. I love her and I hope she sorts that out soon.
That part! I believe same as you that it’s self-sabotage. There are too many tell tale signs of a lack of preparation for these big moments. She wings it, her nerves get the best of her and she ends up sounding a mess. I think she knows she has problems but low-key believes her voice is damaged so perhaps it’s a mix of ego and fear keeping her from consulting a professional voice coach. However, I think she would be surprised how much of her decline is down to her vices and lack of training than any actual damage cos there are times she sounds very healthy. If her voice was damaged she wouldn’t have those moments but she does, so it’s all her🤷🏽♂️
I wouldn’t judge her current vocal ability from this one performance because she is about to perform a lot more for the holidays in intimate spaces then will we really get a taste

Nodules affect the quality of your tone but not your breath support etc. It sounded like her vocalisation apparatus wasn’t sufficiently warmed up. Who really knows how that day transpired backstage. If I were to guess she was likely up all night and then spent the day doing press and by the time the performance came she had nothing left to give. Mariah can still sing, it’s just a shame she tends to bomb on the biggest stages with the most cameras watching🤦🏽♂️ Personally, I think she should stop doing these kinds of performances, as they tend to do more damage to her reputation than good tbh.

Can she still sing? Absolutely. Is it painful to watch/listen to her sing her own songs in a way that kinda takes away from their iconic status? Of course. One thing is for sure Mariah will continue to perform and make music cos that’s just who she is. This! Exaclty! Why have people not addressed this for her? She is usually an amazing vocalist. I've noticed she sounds very out of breath and like she keeps trying to catch up on it, like continuously walking though the sand, while talking, and never reaching the beach.
That's the thing with music. No replacement is needed. An artist will have their prime and demise, without anyone coming to take their place. Every new artist bursting out creats their own place in the industry. Nobody's threatening Mariah, it's just that younger generations prefer new acts. All artists stop being relatable eventually and they are remembered for their past achievements.
Her vocal circuses may fade with age as any other singers do BUT her unique Mariah tone will live forever and as a very picky listener that is what I always look for a singer, the unique tone. Mariah Carey will always be a global treasure!

She’s out of breath, it does seem to be taxing for her. I will always love love love my queen but we have to start taking things more seriously. Working on connected notes, hopefully working with a vocal coach. I’m just being realistic. I can’t look at a whole concert and be like “oh we belong together was great!“ but nothing really else.

In fairness to her, we don't know whether she's ill. We've been here before around 2014 when she did 'All I Want For Christmas' at the Rockefeller Center. It was REALL BAD and you could even hear her on the isolated mic feed stating how she wished she could do it again. I've no doubt she will come back with some AMAZING vocals....she always does!

Her lower register is still in good shape and she still has the ability to do fluid runs.
Her upper chest register is still disconnected and staccato-like. Often time she stops and starts singing multiple times in the same phrase. This is probably the nodules causing this. I agree, proper breath support and increased fitness will definitely help with this. I remember in 2005-2010 when she was in great shape and it really helped with her upper belting.
On a side note, the upper ascending head voice run on “whose” was spectacular, and definitely live. The highest she’s gone on that word probably ever.
I think she still has it, her quarantine performances showed that. She just seems to be her worst enemy at times. The corsets, the breath control etc.
It still amazes me that even in current voice she’s never compared to anyone else except her younger self.

I'm a huge lamb myself and this wasn't her best performance but not her worst either. She just needs to rehearse more and alter the keys and I think she'd per perfect (or close to it). I've seen her live twice in the last 10 years and she can definitely still sing regardless of her naysayers!

One thing about Mariah is that she hates being told what to do (If you've read her memoir, it is quite evident). Having said that, I am not sure how this would work out for her. If she's not willing to take vocal training seriously, I think it's better she avoid big events like this altogether. I can just imagine the stress.
You’re absolutely right and I’m a lamb, but you have to start taking your craft more seriously. As fans we can’t enable the behavior and ignore certain trends. She has gained weight, she doesn’t like working out so that’s the cardio right there. She hasn’t been working with a vocal coach, and her memoir does show that she does like to do things her way which isn’t necessarily bad if you don’t have bad habits.

when mariah sounds like this it’s because she is vocally tired. she said in a twitter space recently she is working on a “inspirational” album (gospel) and has been using her voice a lot when she should be resting for upcoming performances (global citizens festival). this means she’s been in the studio recently rather than strict vocal rest, which explains the vocal fatigue here. I think your analysis is very harsh and delusive but considering you’re not a die hard fan, it’s expected. this clearly is mariah not at her best but now you know the reasoning. I thought y’all would’ve learned by now, don’t ever count mariah out! she always comes back better than ever. christmas time is approaching❤️

What I respect so much about Mariah, and I don't believe many people see it the same way, is that she doesn't usually even attempt it if she doesn't think she can do a decent go at it. So she ducks notes, changes things up seemingly on the fly and does about the best she can, but you don't hear a ton of bum notes because she just ducks the note if she thinks she can't hit it. some people hate that, but I admire it. She's lost portions of her voice obviously and is out of shape so struggling a lot of the time to perform well, but her mind and incredible knowledge of vocal performance remains every bit as great as it ever was.
Why you did not use the video of the concert its available in YT. So you can see her upclose and clearly. Alongside with the audio.

I feel like her instrument has changed, if she can get with someone that can guide her with using what she has to work with . It might not be her 1995 instrument. How about not having a good day at 53 years old ? Sometimes people speak as it’s totally lost but we know Mariah ‘s voice is up and down. She has been like that since the end of the 90’s. Her voice sounded drier than usual that day indeed.

I'm confused as to why you're commenting as if her voice is permanently going to be in this current state? She was clearly having a bad vocal day when even her speaking voice was rapsy.
The dryness is definitely from the nodules (which is what wear and tear is). It used to be something that you only noticed at the very top of her range, but by the late 2000s it was present more and more. Now her belts sometimes are almost all rasp. Interesting texture, but difficult to fit into her song catalogue. The nodules have even started to affect her whistles, you'll notice she's sounding polyphonic. Maybe the nodules could be reduced in size and hardness instead of removed completely? I'm sure Mariah would kill for even her 2000s voice condition.
And yes, she needs to do some cardio. So many of her songs rely on immense breathe control. If her technique needs more breath now, he needs to get fitter to find that breath.
I think it has a lot to do with her being nervous and possibly the why she sounds dry because y'all forget her natural singing voice is a alto, and all her soprano notes come from nodules so her being nerves might effect her voice more then a person who doesn't have nodules also she was doing a lot of very high notes to promote Christmas and Halloween so I don't know if that was done during the time she was preparing for this performance but God knows how many times she hit those notes to make her video they was she wanted it

On MC, I love her, (not as much as Whitney) but MC has said herself her voice isn't consistent. Also, if you've ever watched any of her tv series, she always has a glass of wine in her hand (which is totally fine) but we all know alcohol dehydrates the voice. She could definitely benefit from bringing some of the songs down a semitone or so

I think at this point she needs to realize she needs help, go see a vocal doctor, remove her nodules, take a long break to rest and rehabilitate her voice, and then make regular visits to cheryl porter for vocal coaching. That’s the only way.

I’m a HVC fan. I’ve never seen her this harsh in her feedback but as a lamb I must say I agreed with most of the feedback. But overall I enjoyed the performance I wish HVC would have pulled out the greater moments.
So, I think she needs to have some voice sessions to refresh her technique. Even here mouth and placement of the notes are lazy. Is it pride? Get fit. Take a refresher course. Relearn where to place the notes. Consider Botox injects into the chords to see if there is improvement.
Mariah said during the pandemic she got her voice back... she was singing live at home 🏡 and doing well.... so to me she sounded underneath the weather or maybe she had one too many splashes 😄

The problem with Mariah is that she urgently needs vocal rehab but she seems to entitled, and all the DiVA attitude, don't allow her to see her faults, it's not just about the nodules, her technique became poorer, she really some vocal workout
We don’t know what her routine is, but the evidence is clear in how she sounds that she doesn’t take care of her voice in the way she should. I think some of that will be ego, but she’ll lose it completely if she continues singing in this way.

Lupus isn't Nodules, Toni isn't globally demanded as much as Mariah, Toni never sung as vocally taxing songs as Mariah, nor does Toni have the range of Mariah, etc. I love Toni's voice don't get me wrong but don't compare apples with oranges. I do agree though that Mariah should take better care of her voice and maybe choose and schedule her live appearances more carefully. She doesn't need to attend any shows she doesn't want to, so I don't get why she does performances to then seem to be unprepared or too nervous or whatever the issue may be and then underperform... Anyway, she does still show some genius here and there when she is well rested and in a comfortable space.

Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy listening Mariah live anymore, because I am constantly worrying if her voice gonna crack if she can make it. She really can’t sing the way she could. The thing is that she doesn’t move me in live performances, I think that the main focus in lives is on how she gonna sing, if she is getting better and sounds like she used to.
I was in the audience, it was a wonderful time and New York was showing Mariah a lot of love. However; I agree with your analysis. I think she really needs to focus on her vocal health if she plans on doing more live performances or resume touring. She was struggling to get through this < 20 minute set.

Her voice is not there but her confidence is. Still waiting for her new album. I gradually think Mariah should be a “studio singer”. Her voice is not consistent anymore but she still has it, which means she could still make a good studio project when she is on her good days.

Mariah's vocal peak was WAY before 30 years old or even that age range. Mariah peaked in the early 90's then her voice went downhill after 96. She started using prerecorded live vocals in her performances as far back as 97 when she 'sang' Hero on Oprah. Very noticeable change of vocals during that 97 Hero 'performance', especially on the bridge.
#honestvocalcoach singing has never been easy for Mariah. She's always looked uncomfortable performing live. She's by NO MEANS the Greatest Female Singer. Sorry sister. Mariah was never even close to Whitney Houston live on her best day. Same thing with Celine Dion. Mariah's more of a studio Singer with some stand out live moments.

Love me some Mariah. But I agree her recent performances seem dry and we always point it out to her nerves or her nodules. Given that she was on a long rest for the past few years, she could have work on her stage presence and possibly do trainings with a vocal coach. She always seem out of breath when singing. I remember she used to swim a lot and exercise hence, her stamina was on point before. I love Mariah and I hope she look after herself more.

I think theres a correlation between the agility of her voice and her arm and hand gestures. Mariah guides her notes with her hands, always has. But back in the day the gestures used to be bigger her hands were flat and the runs were smoother. These days she sticks out her index finger and does tiny aggressive chopping motions and her runs turn into staccato breaks..

this was not good. You cant see it on this recording but the dress is really not helping her. Too tight. Vocally has potential and moments but needs way more practice to get better. Loads of lipping is not helping her as how do you build up any flow. We have to take the long break into account. And i think she is a heavily nervous singer thats voice is easily impacted. its like this performance was nothing in comparison to some of the 2019 christmas dates. i personally will give her time but i know others wont. which i think is justified at this point.
At least she had kids, has wealth and has a great back catalogue, because she doesn't have much a career ahead of her judging by this performance. Talk about an epic fail. Whatever she did during lockdown, it wasn't working on her vocals. 😞

The job of a Singer, is to take care of the voice, body, health, mind, healthy eating, healthy lifestyle...etc.
This is probably just that she was so nervous the day before that she did not sleep well, then on top of being tired she was suuuuper nervous, because of all the scrutiny on her voice and her stage fright, so her thraot closes. What I don't get is how she doesn't manage to take some sleeping pills or something to keep her damn nervousness under control after aaaall these years. It's like she has this self-sabotage thing we all have, me included, where you do worst when you have to do best. Then you hear her in an insignificant event and she sounds amazing. I love her and I hope she sorts that out soon.

That part! I believe same as you that it’s self-sabotage. There are too many tell tale signs of a lack of preparation for these big moments. She wings it, her nerves get the best of her and she ends up sounding a mess. I think she knows she has problems but low-key believes her voice is damaged so perhaps it’s a mix of ego and fear keeping her from consulting a professional voice coach. However, I think she would be surprised how much of her decline is down to her vices and lack of training than any actual damage cos there are times she sounds very healthy. If her voice was damaged she wouldn’t have those moments but she does, so it’s all her🤷🏽♂️

Nodules affect the quality of your tone but not your breath support etc. It sounded like her vocalisation apparatus wasn’t sufficiently warmed up. Who really knows how that day transpired backstage. If I were to guess she was likely up all night and then spent the day doing press and by the time the performance came she had nothing left to give. Mariah can still sing, it’s just a shame she tends to bomb on the biggest stages with the most cameras watching🤦🏽♂️ Personally, I think she should stop doing these kinds of performances, as they tend to do more damage to her reputation than good tbh.

This! Exaclty! Why have people not addressed this for her? She is usually an amazing vocalist. I've noticed she sounds very out of breath and like she keeps trying to catch up on it, like continuously walking though the sand, while talking, and never reaching the beach.
1. Her duet with Pavarotti was great!
2. No one has come to replace her yet.
3. She's no longer 20, she can't just go on raw talent.

That's the thing with music. No replacement is needed. An artist will have their prime and demise, without anyone coming to take their place. Every new artist bursting out creats their own place in the industry. Nobody's threatening Mariah, it's just that younger generations prefer new acts. What poor Whitney sounded like in her latter years was just plain sad. Loved her dearly but her voice was just gone.
Well I’m not a vocal coach but I am honest when I say I really enjoyed her performance! It’s not always about hitting this or that note! And I completely disagree on the We belong together reaction! I think she nailed it and I can’t wait I for her future projects, lives etc.
I loved we belong together, the bridge was class especially the last note!
I’m a huge lamb and I have to disagree with you. No, it’s not necessarily about hitting this or that note but it needs to at least have fluidity. She’s out of breath, it does seem to be taxing for her. I will always love love love my queen but we have to start taking things more seriously. Working on connected notes, hopefully working with a vocal coach. I’m just being realistic. I can’t look at a whole concert and be like “oh we belong together was great!“ but nothing really else.

In fairness to her, we don't know whether she's ill. We've been here before around 2014 when she did 'All I Want For Christmas' at the Rockefeller Center. It was REALL BAD and you could even hear her on the isolated mic feed stating how she wished she could do it again. I've no doubt she will come back with some AMAZING vocals....she always does!
