On replay, I actually really enjoyed this game. It feels like this is where Final Fantasy really started to form its identity. And I actually like the customization in the battle system
I honestly wish I could have played FFII when I was a kid, back on the NES. I really want to know what 10 year old me would have thought about it, being such a huge fan of FFI. But since I couldn't play it until I was already an adult, my views on it were mostly negative. FFII in the modern era is very hard to enjoy. It's not impossible, but it takes the right kind of attitude. When I played the Pixel Remaster version (I played on PC months ago when there was none of these extra boost, I actually really enjoyed leveling my characters, because at this point I knew how to bend the game over my knee. I leveled all my characters with 2 shields until their shield skill was 16 and their AGI and evasion was so high that even bosses couldn't even hit my party. This fixed the issue of enemies destroying the party with status ailments that always apply on hit. When you are going for all achievements, the biggest issue becomes the one time only areas, of which there are tons of in FFII. The one thing that no version of FFII can't fix no matter how accessible is the awful dungeon design. No other RPG has had dungeon design like this, thankfully. Paths are long and twisting and often just dead end. The one thing about FFII I've always liked was the villain. This guy is an absolute evil monster the entire game, he's destroying towns, mass murdering people, you really come to hate him. And then when you finally fight him, and kill him, this old NES game from the 80s lets you think you've actually won for a while. While you are celebrating your victory, this absolute madman was taking over hell, and he returns as the king of hell with a new army of demons. I always loved that part of the story.
Nice video. I just wanted to say your FF1 video got me to buy and platinum FF1 myself for the first time. I already have FF2 bought and downloaded now. I was going back and forth about what I wanted to play tonight cause I'm also in the middle of working on a Diablo 2 level 99 hardcore char.. but not tonight! tonight I'm gonna start Final Fantasy 2 and by the time I'm finished with that I'm sure your FF3 video will be up... maybe even your FF4 video.. let's see^^
My experience of FF2 on PSP was great and I really really like its levelling and of course the bgm. The bgm is just so good! I mean FF2 bgm is so underrated… I plan on getting pixel remastered FF2 to relive my childhood joy
I’ve finished my third run through FFII PR, and I love the leveling system so much. I grew up playing Quest 64, so this is a natural fit for me. I do criticize parts of it - while it makes sense that a high-level Teleport will take care of most everything, there aren’t enough enemies immune to it. I laughed out loud when I first killed the emperor with Teleport, since it felt almost anticlimactic. Any boss that’s immune to Teleport? Osmose. Drain its MP in one round, and go to town with Drain if it’s an alive target. Try that on Undead, though, and you’ll have a very bad time. Love this game.
Great video, played the gba advance version for FFI & FFII back in the days! Quite different from the first, but a decent game as I recall. Keep it up 😁
Until 8 Final Fantasy 2 was the most broken entry for me to go through. It’s amazing how incredibly overpowered I was by the end of it. But FF2 was made more of a masterpiece thanks to the Pixel Remaster. The soundtrack was made even more incredible than before!
I liked the keywords. It made interacting with characters more than just walking up to someone and pressing a button. Not as good as Mass Effect's dialogue options but it is a good start, specially for a NES game.
Great video Subscribed! For me I could never get into FF2 until the pixel remaster. I tried a few times but the leveling system was just too broken. But with the pixel remaster if you set the boost up it really helps as you do level stats faster and you dont have to attack your party members to raise the HP it just incresese organically. So grinding is way less. Its a nice touch.
The journey of this game was outstanding! I had countless fun venturing the world and knowing you can make your own build is amazing! I truly loved this game. I kind of understand people not enjoying this title but the pixel remaster really fixed a lot of the things the original had. But everywhere I went I never really felt lost. Honestly my favorite of the series!
I dont mind the keyword system, it is pretty obvious which you need to use for the most part, but also i got excited when i first encountered it as a fan of Morrowind, which used a more complex keyword system (but it even has the brackets!). That said, the leveling system always reminded me of Elder Scrolls as well, albeit more rudimentary and without regular levels, since ES has both systems in tandem.
II is easily my favorite Final Fantasy before VI. I've always had a soft spot for rebellion against evil empire themed stories, and I like the stat growth system because Saga/Final Fantasy Legend II was the first Squaresoft RPG I played and it uses a similar stat growth system for two of its races. (I got Saga/Final Fantasy Legend II and Final Fantasy I on the same day but mom and I were about to take a trip to visit her family so I decided to save the NES game until we got home) I pre-ordered Final Fantasy Origins just to get Final Fantasy II and later got Dawn of Souls, the PSP version, the Steam version, the Android mobile version (I might have had the iPhone version when I used an iPhone I'm not sure) and the Pixel remaster version.
Great coverage, have to agree with your take on the random battles. In general I like random battles but the encounter rate is so high on ff2. I remember playing on the PS1 version and leaving the starting town and went the wrong way and entered an open area where the monsters would one hit kill me. Stupidly enough I had saved it in this area too. What I noticed was every time I took 5 steps from my save point I'd fight a group. Luckily it was the start of the game and I could start again. Can't say I hate the keyword system though, it is annoying to get the words but it does mean you can't have a conversation about a subject that you never prompted or have prior knowledge of.
Didn’t really like the leveling system in the og but the fact you can set the boosters to alter weapon skills really helps when you want to upgrade a weapon skill you never used before
Never thought the password system was all that big of a deal. It's essentially just giving you a dialogue tree. Dungeons were straight trash with all the empty rooms. I seem to recall one or the dungeons in IV doing something similar. Might be the dungeon you couldn't wear anything metal either. Been a few years. May also be the one that had a lot of demon doors to fight which lead to empty rooms. I did have ally characters maxed out around the time I got Scott's ring. Encounter rate is presumably to help you gain stats better since you're fighting a lot more. Aside from filling the bestiary, I didn't need to battle that much since unarmed you can just about one shot most things until final dungeons. Magic is still a must there but Ultima and flare are more than sufficient. It was a lot less tedious with boosts which is probably the only reason I bothered grinding Captains in Fynn as long as I did. Otherwise that alone would have been 40+hours which would certainly not be worth it. Finished it last night and working on III now.

There's a reason everyone considers this the weakest in the series. It's all fun from here. They have lowered the encounter rate. It was every 3-5 steps before. They basically doubled it.
I started this and remembered how much I disliked it back in the day. So, I am saving this for the last plat. Got the plat for 1 and close to getting the one for 3. I am using max boosts and guides and not ashamed because I have already beaten all of these, some many times over, and so I have gone through as it was intended 😂. So, I have to ask, because hp is what's kept me from enjoying this in the past. Does the "compulsory hp" mean you gain HP now regardless of damage taken? Basically, in my older experiences, I wouldn't take much damage for awhile, to the point where I'd get to a new area and just constantly get one shotted.
I'm not sure why FF2 gets so much hate. I played it normally, stuck with the same weapon type for each character, and had a blast! The encounter rate in FF2 is high, but I still think FF9 has the highest overall. I love FF1- FFX- they are great games! FF2 (and FF8) don't deserve the hate!

@@EelofTheTRIMS Yeah that's just because he has higher HP than anything else, but concretly it take the same amount of blood sword attack to kill him than anything else in the game.
@@nesoukkefka1741yeah I know. But it’s still the ultimate cheese against that boss. I don’t get why you are arguing it when all I’m stating is a fact about how the blood sword makes the final boss crazy easy. For most of the rest of the game teleport is quicker to win. There’s like 2-3 bosses in the entire game that teleport won’t work on. Most of them I got round one with teleport.
I like FF2. It's definitely not the best. But it's not bad at all. Never was. And the pixel remaster made it much better in my opinion. I've only played the original NES version, the PS1 and the pixel remaster. Never played the PSP or other versions. But I think the Pixel Remaster is a solid 8 out of 10. Final boss was a little easy in my opinion but other than that not much else about it bothers me.
@@GenesisVII Thank you. I'm a little hesitant about buying the big bundle because FF1 still has the limited magic system, but I loved the story of FF2.
@@GenesisVII one of the worst ones for me outside the 2000 dungeons and Fates. I made it somewhat bearable using a third party app on my phone that clicks between two spots and then opened the companion app and let it deleted everything in my inventory. Might be frowned upon, but I wasn't going to pay another moth for a subscription just for one trophy 😂 already spent 300 hours already.
Turning off random encounters in any FF game is just making it easy mode, it required strategy and planning that was part of the appeal of the classic games. I guess if you just want a story driven only game it makes sense, but the journey feels hollow you could just read a synopsis and get the same thing, no sense of accomplishment overcoming all adversity.
But turning Off random encounters makes it technically harder, because you don’t get that much exp. And FF2 has MP + Osmose, so you don’t have to be so careful about your resources like in FF1

@@nesoukkefka1741yeah but in ff2 in particular against the final boss it’s just a straight up cheese
Is it easy enough to overlook the frame stuttering when playing through these?
I've never noticed them tbh
Are you sure they are all of the missable enemies before you go in to lethithan
Yeah I’m pretty sure, do you think I’m missing more?
Why isn't anyone talking about the Hill Gigas??
Great delivery and hair.
How many hours you took for each FF?
It's only been around 20-25 hours each for 1 and 2, I expect that to go up dramatically as we go on lol
Yeah I can agree with that!
Do you have a link to where I can get a copy of my own?
I got mine from the Square Enix store when it was up for preorder, I don't think you'd wanna look at eBay right now
@@GenesisVII Thank you. I'm a little hesitant about buying the big bundle because FF1 still has the limited magic system, but I loved the story of FF2.
Curious if you're going to attempt FF14 trophy 😂 I'm almost there. Taking a few months to do. Sooooo much grinding collectables
The trophies I need are all the crafting and gathering ones, it’s doable it just takes time. A lot of time hahaha
Bro, sometimes I don't feel like fighting 200 encounters while walking between towns while destressing after a 10hr shift. Let people just enjoy themselves. Doing it your way is cool but don't yuck others yum.
Mate I’m on the mission to smash all final fantasy’s on ps5. I can’t say I’m loving ff2 though.
It can be a pain!
@@GenesisVII in the process of doing a massive states grind. Before moving on to the next part of the game. Went the first main town and got killed by one of the imperials. Hope your getting on well with FF3
@@weredevil616 Good luck and I'm getting there!
@@weredevil616don’t even try and fight the imperials early on
@@bd4315 yeah found that out. Only just got my fourth character done a shit load of grinding but got super powerful characters now.
Meanwhile im waiting for the restock. By then ill probably beat ff16..
First three are good then it's downhill, for iv, v, vi originals are better.
A lot of people love the GBA versions too!
How spoilery is this video?
ff2 is okay but even with the pixel remaster its still one of the worst ff games in the series
I enjoyed this time around!
FF2 still SUCKS so I'll still never play it ever.
