This is an unfair comparison. The RR video was filmed in front of the engine and with a DSLR. The GE was filmed on the side of the engine with a GoPro which has pretty crappy audio quality compared to a DSLR. I flew the MAX and used my GoPro to film the takeoff, and I regret it as the sound was so crappy you couldnt appreciate the sound like you could on DSLR.
I've worked on both GE's and RR turbofans. GE-CF6-50's on the A320 airbus and RR-RB211-535E's on the B-757-200. Both were excellent engines. From a sound perspective though, I prefer the roar of the RR engines especially running on the ground full power adjusting the fuel control! Standing on the sides of those beasts running full power with the cowls open is something I'll never forget. Concrete vibrating under your feet while 42 thousand lbs of thrust fly out the back 4ft from your face....priceless! ;)
The RR Engine has such an amazing sound, but I think that the GE engine is much more comfortable, especially for those long routes that the 787 is used
RR Trent engines are perfect on a B777-2H6(ER) or an Airbus A380. GE sorry but I hate to say it. 4.8/10 it makes whining noises but RR Trents make roar noises which is better.
@@justanaturalcarguy4031 the roaring noise isn't necessary because the 787 needed a quiet cabin, that's why genx is Quiet and efficient and the most popular engine choice for airlines who wanted to operate the 787
The two engines actually sound quite similar. I think the difference in this video had more to do with the seating arrangement. The footage of the Trent 1000 was taken from in front of the intake. The footage of the GE was taken practically right beside the engine cowling, which insulates a lot of the characteristic sound.
Funny you should say that, as the sound coming from the front of the engine at cruising speed would hit really close to the position of the camera in the GEnX video. In fact, at sonic speed, it would make the RR engine silent. The advantage in this video is to the Rolls Royce, as far as a quieter microphone position goes, when at cruising speed. Think of it. Sound leaves the front of the engine. That same sound then hits air at around 400 to 500mph. This diffracts the sound travel to more straight sideways the faster the engine goes up until the speed of sound. Above the speed of sound, the sound is actually behind the engine. The point being that right beside the intake face of the engine at cruising speed will still be loud. There is also the sound transmitted through the skin of the airplane to the passengers. On the 787 they use LESS sound deadening than they do on other planes due specifically to the GEnX engine, so if the second plane is a 787, you have to consider it is also experiencing that lower noise with a lower level of sound deadening.
My thoughts exactly. would have been more plausible if the actual comparison was from same window seats on same type aircraft. Avatar was click bait. Not impressed.
Their seating position still puts them “ahead of the sound.” And having flown on both engines from seat 1A I can say I didn’t even realize the GE engine was on as we rolled down the runway. My first 787 with GEs I had to look out the window to make sure my cabin crew wasn’t secretly pushing the plane. Then after about 8 of those quiet engine trips my first RR 787 I had to find solace from the cabin crew that the engine noise was normal despite setting off my heart rate alert on my Apple Watch.
I personally don't care how loud the engines are so long as they do their job and don't give me a massive migraine. Aside from that, I find the sound of both engines pleasing to listen to. Not sure if I'm weird for liking the sound of air plane engines or not.
Having flown on dreamliners with both engines About a dozen times i can honestly say they are just as loud. But i notice that if you sit “on” or behind the wing it is extremely quiet and if you sit in front of the “air intake” it is very loud on both engines. My favorite sounding of the engines is the Trent 1000 TEN by far.

If you try to bend it with the bend radius too small it cracks. Sometimes if you don't polish the edges it cracks. In addition annealed titanium has to be kept very cold (deep freeze or dry ice) in order to maintain the annealed condition. If you let it get too warm before forming it it hardens and cracks. I guess what I'm getting at is the fact that titanium is very easy to crack.

The GE is quieter simple because of the recording angle as opposed to the R.R.engine. On the R.R. engine, you can hear the fan and the combustion.
Rolls Royce is my favorite engine sound.
General electric, Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce is my favorite. So I'm on no one's side which means I like them all :)
YUP! Rolls Royce is the way to go
Liked the video, but you didnt really make it a fair test because you sat in different seats therefore the noise will be different. (Not saying it because I’m a GE fan, nor a Rolls fan)
C’mon GEnx is the real winner. RR needs to power up. Like if you agree
I'm not a technician but GE seems quiter and more powerful. Probably a different design/technology. Great engine.
I liked both of the engines! What I liked about the Rolls Royce engine is that it sounds very powerful and I liked the GE engine because it sounds very quit!
Kristopher Maron rr might sound powerful but due genx is way more powerful than the trent 1000 ^^
Because it used RR technology
rr maximum trust 80.k lbf higher than ge but ge offer high fuel efficiency
hahahha genx doesnt need full thrust in that take off while roll royce using everything he could to take off
On a long haul flight I would prefer the GE but medium haul the RR
GE: peaceful. RR: anguish
Normally i dont really like the Engine made by General Electric, but they still better about the RR Engine
GE is smoother by far and more powerful
Matthew Allen the Trent 1000 can produce more thrust than the genx can though
DANG General electrics engine is quieter which is very nice because you could get more sleep
Rolls Royce for sure, I love the sound of them 👍
well than me too
Sorry old chap, but this is a poorly designed comparison: especially because you're sitting in different seat locations. Other factors that need to be known: temperature, altitude of airdrome, initial wind direction, etc.
Han radio jim
ham radio jim and dare I say it - the engine rating at takeoff. The engines in the 787 can be producing from 50klbf to 70klbf of thrust depending on the engine rating and derate. Good thing engine companies test and report their noise data. GEnx is just a bit louder.

ham radio jim
ham radio jim nice example but he is partial
Old chap.
General Electric - GEnx is AWESOME every time & Any time.
HATS OFF !!!
Good thing this is available in 1080HD...really enhances the sound coming out of my iPhone sound holes...
GE by x1000, definitely the best engine
Well every one on board RR caught cold 🥶 after sneezing in the background 🤧 5 times 😪😂😂😂😂
RR's Titanium fan blades vs GE's composites fan blades. ....well, tough choice though, both are pretty well engineered ....
GTF will beat them both
BOTH are just as good as the other ... Jet Engines....ah! Music to my Ears!! Happy Landings !!!😍🤩
at 3:52 for the GE recording, it sounds like something muffled the mic just as the engine was finishing runup
The genx is so quiet though I’ve heard both irl and I generally prefer the genx
GE for long trips and RR for shorter trips ;)
AMAZING BEAUTIFUL JOB!!!
So many variables here it’s a silly video. Was it toga or flex power? Condition of the runway? Temperature of the air? What was each of there weights? Were you drinking?
GE all the way
Flew to Cuba from Gatwick on a TUI 788 and the engine was silent
Me: omg eargasm
My mom: shut tf up
The Trent 1000 sounds like a blender or a jet ski. 😅😅😅
The GEnx: Set condition ultra quiet like a submarine. 👌🏽👌🏽
Everytime I ride a plane:
*WING SEAT!!*
GE IS SO QUIET VERY NICE 👍
UR MOM IS SO QUIET VERY NICE
GE was quiet compared with the RR, My next flight will be with a jet that has GE engines, we need sleep on those long haul flights.
okay don't fly on the 777 it has GE90s which are louder than RR LOL
Then you would want to go with an A350 with the RR engines.... it's quieter than the B787.
EPIC E Flat for the first plane!! It sounds like an A350!! That dude was having a sneeze attack in the background sneezing 5 times 🤣🤣
GEnx because it is much quieter
I hear these planes over my house!
Coydog *facepalms*... I hear a bunch of F22s over my house. Eglin AFB FTW.
GE, because I worked at GE Aircraft Engines when this engine was first engineered. Great engine!
Both are superior engines. The GE is quieter from the sitting position at least. My question is this: which is more durable over the years and how many hours of flying time can each of the engines go before it needs to be replaced?
